During the Reconstruction Era, Abraham Lincoln was the president and he wanted to rebuild the Union since the Civil War split the nation into the Union and the Confederacy. Andrew Johnson was the vice president that served for Lincoln. Lincoln gave full amnesty to the Confederacy and welcomed them back with the Union. Lincoln tried to get rid of slavery by creating the 13th amendment which was saying that slavery is abolished. In addition he tried to help freed slaves by providing things for them to live. His rooted beliefs to help the less fortunate vanished when he realized his power over the southern aristocrats and passed the "10%" Reconstruction Plan instead. First, he forgave ex-Confederate officials and began fighting with the Republican Congress about Civil Rights. The Congress refused to accept the ex-Confederate officials and the new laws and codes they proposed in 1865. Andrew Johnson apposed and vetoed both the Civil Rights bill and the Freedman’s Bureau bill in 1866 hoping to bring the Southern States back into the union. Andrew Johnson is one of the many presidents we have had over the years but is only one of 3 that have been impeached. While he believed it was his job to keep the legislator under control, he violated the Tenure of Office Act, and he violated the Army Appropriations Act, and on top of everything else, Johnson vetoed over twenty bills that the Legislator tried to pass. This angered the Legislature which gave them many reasons to try and remove him from office. Andrew Johnson was impeached for these reasons and more that may be unlisted, and even though he stayed in office, the Legislature continued to try and remove him.
Abraham Lincoln’s vs Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan Lincoln shared the uncommon belief that the confederate states could still be part of the union and that the cause of the rebellion was only a few within the states which lead him to begin the reconstruction in December of 1863. This resulted in plans with lenient guidelines and although they were challenged by Wade-Davis Bill, Lincoln still rejected his ideas and kept his policies in place. Lincoln also allowed land to be given the newly freed slave or homeless white by distributing the land that had been confiscated from former land owners however this fell through once Johnson took office. After Lincoln’s death when Johnson was elected many things started to turn away from giving blacks equal rights and resulted in many things such a black codes which kept newly freed slaves from having the same rights as whites. When Lincoln first acted after the civil war, he offered policies that would allow the confederate slaves to become part of the union again and would allow a pardon for those states.
