The novel ‘Night’ written by Elie Wiesel and the film ‘Schindlers List’ directed by Steven Spielberg, are both based in World War 2 and more specifically the holocaust and the attempted cleanse of the Jewish race. These two texts both heavily demonstrate the horrors and brutalities that the Jewish people had faced during the holocaust. The two depictions of these events have many similarities although one being word and the other being film, however they differ in perspective, Schindlers List showing an outside look at the events where Night is a first person experience. Alfred Münzer was born on November 23rd, 1941 in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. In the summer of 1942, when he was a year old, his father received summons for work duty, which entailed going to a camp. In response to this Alfred's family decided it would be best for the family to separate and hide, as it would give their children a chance to survive even if they were to be found. Alfred’s parents found refuge in a psychiatric hospital, his father as a patient, and his mother as a nurse, where, on December 31st, 1942, New Year’s Eve, all 250 hiding patients were arrested by the Nazis. Alfred’s sisters would follow suit after being shifted through multiple homes, and would consequently perish after being given up to the Nazis.

While Elie Wiesel was in Auschwitz some of the things he saw were completely awful, for example one of the kids he saw was about to be hung but when the bottom of the gallow fell the boy's neck didn't snap and he sat there squirming, suffocating, the boy sat there for an hour or two. Wiesel compared his mother's face to a mask in order to depict how she was petrified that all of this was happening. Surprisingly his father was crying and yet his mother was the one showing barely any emotion. His mother knew what to expect, their horror has just begun and she is all ready changed. A mask is a covering for the face that one may use to hide or disease themselves. Wiesel’s mother was trying to be strong for her children, despite of the circumstances.

After watching the documentary I think you really get a sense of how horrific the Holocaust was. I mean we always learn about it in school, but it is usually through textbooks and primary source documents. We learn about the atrocities; however the American educational system touches upon it lightly. Ultimately, Americans only get a small idea of what the Holocaust was especially to the Jewish people. We learn so much about the Holocaust, but not about who lived by it.

In “Night” we follow the journey of a Jewish teenage boy named Elie Wiesel who is taken to a concentration camp toward the end of the second world war. In the autobiography “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, we follow the story of a young Iranian girl named Marji. In “Persepolis”, Marji has to face adversity during a time of war and sorrow after the islamic revolution.

Experiences that affect people emotionally will often alter their mindsets, causing them to change their beliefs. When Elie’s father first become sick, Elie is forced to take on a lot of responsibility to care for him. As the days pass, Elie begins to lose hope that his father will ever get better, as his father becomes bedridden and could barely speak. This takes changes Elie emotionally, changing his perspective regarding the one person he cares for the most. When Elie can not find his father while they are running with the mob, he begins to consider the possible outcomes of the situation, wickedly thinking,“if only [he] [is] relieved of this responsibility, [he] could use all [his] strength to fight for [his] own survival, to take care only of [himself]…”

Elie Wiesel received the Nobel Peace prize on December 10th, 1986 in Oslo. As a teenager years he was deported to Auschwitz death camp with his mother, father, and sisters. Unfortunately he was the only one who survived The Holocaust. His experiences during The Holocaust have shaped him to be the man he is, he is a very successful author and an inspiration to all people. He overcame the obstacles of harsh winters, little to no food, losing faith in his God, and the loss of all his loved ones, after the war he said in his book Night that he looked in the mirror for the first time in a few years and saw a dying man.

In his book, Night, Elie Wiesel wrote, “I told him that I did not believe that they could burn people in our age, that humanity would never tolerate it…” yet they did just that. To this day, one of the most taught and lectured wars is the Holocaust, where around eleven million people died in the most gruesome and evil manner ever imagined. People were burned and gassed but no one did anything to stop it. There are hundreds of books and movies out today that try to help us understand just what it was like in those days. Maus I: My Father Bleeds History written by Art Spiegelman and Night written by Elie Wiesel are two books written by a survivor and a survivor’s son, that illustrate the gruesome yet vivid details of what they lived.

Chapter One Summary: In chapter one of Night by Elie Wiesel, the some of the characters of the story are introduced and the conflict begins. The main character is the author because this is an autobiographical novel. Eliezer was a Jew during Hitler’s reign in which Jews were persecuted. The book starts out with the author describing his faith.

The Holocaust was a horrible event in history that will scar humanity forever. With the events of the Holocaust being experienced by millions there are many different perspectives of said events. One such perspective is presented in Night, a memoir written by Elie Wiesel about his experiences as a young Jewish boy during the Holocaust. Another perspective is presented in Schindler’s List, a film directed by Steven Spielberg (based on the novel Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally) about Oskar Schindler, a gentile who saves over one thousand Jewish lives during the Holocaust. Both pieces show heart wrenching stories of the abuse of a group of people in different ways, each using different mediums to convey their points.
