In chapter 11 of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Courage by Edgar Albert Guest have numerous similarities. The points of similarities diction and theme were created for several reasons. Similarities between the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird and the text Courage are illustrated through negative tone by diction. The novel states, “She was vicious. Once she heard Jem refer to our father as Atticus and her reaction was apoplectic”(Harper Lee 133). Through the use of “apoplectic” and “vicious”, the author used negative connotation which depicts a negative tone. This is similar to Courage because they both show a pessimistic tone. Courage states, “Its written in victory and defeat And every trial a man may meet Its part of his hours, his days, his years” (Edgar Albert Guest 27-29). This quote shows …show more content…
Harper Lee created a negative tone to show how the characters were reacting. In addition, another similar aspect of both stories can be exhibited through theme. In to Kill a Mockingbird the theme of never giving up. The novel states,” I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you you’re licked before you begin but you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what, you rarely win but sometimes you do” (149). This quote signifies how Atticus is teaching his children to never give up. The two literary pieces share this commonalty because they both mention not giving up regardless of what the outcome is. In Courage, the theme of never giving up is also depicted. The poem states, “At some future time when he’s apt to fall; if he hasn’t it now, he will have it not When the strain is great and pace is hot. For who would strive for a distant goal must always have courage within his soul” ( 13-17). This quote supports the theme of never giving up because the quote mentions that people who want to achieve something must never

Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a novel that takes place in a small town, called Maycomb, in Alabama, narrated by Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. Scout learns how to deal with many things in everyday life, including racism and criticism. Moral Courage is having the courage to go against other people 's’ morals and do what you believe is right . Most of the time there are obstacles in the way of doing so, such as people, the community, and yourself. Most stories that use Moral Courage as a theme usually include a character overcoming one of these obstacles and showing Moral Courage. In the Book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” various characters struggle to do what they believe is right by taking action and going against the ideas of other characters. By using Conflict, they way the Characters’ ideas contradict with each others, and Setting, Harper Lee is able to create a story that teaches in detail about Moral Courage.
In To Kill A Mockingbird courage is a very apparent in Harper Lee’s message in the book. A good example of this is, according to Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in To Kill A Mockingbird, "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. " This is exemplified when Atticus takes the trial of Tom Robinson, but we’ll get into that later. Also when Boo Radley fights Bob Ewell in the woods for Scout and Jem, and my last example of when Mrs. Dubose dies in pain to not become a morphine addict. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee proves that you should always fight for something you believe in, even if it is destined to fail.
Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who doesn’t feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” The novel, To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos of human behavior. Atticus, a protagonist in To Kill a Mockingbird with high moral standards. Boo radley, a shy and innocent white man who was convicted for a crime that he didn’t commit.
Elie Wiesel showed the importance of courage not just during his life occurring memory but during our everyday lives, he shows and gives examples of how courage could be the savior to your most difficult times.
Courage is not strength or skill, it’s simply standing up for what you believe in and what is right. This is the theme that was enrolled after Jem destroys Mrs.Dubose’s camellias and after she died in chapter 11. This passage also reveals Jem’s coming of age moment. After using conflict, symbolism, and point of view, Harper Lee was able to connect the theme with Jems coming of age moment.
Do you you think there would still be racism in our country if no one fought against it? In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Lee tackles this question and tries to show the impact the courage people had to speak up about their beliefs had on racism in our country. The story revolves around a controversial trial where a white woman says a black man raped her, but the evidence says otherwise. A lawyer, named Atticus Finch, has the courage to defend the black man even though the very racist town of Maycomb will hate him for it. Courage is shown a lot in this story in other ways, specifically through an old woman named Mrs. Dubose who’s addicted to morphine, and a recluse named Boo Radley who’s never left his house for years that saves Atticus’s children when the father of the white woman attacks them in the woods.
The Most Courageous Character The definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one, or strength in the face of pain or grief. People all over the world perform countless acts of courage every single day. Many characters in Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird portray these courageous traits also. To Kill a Mockingbird - Courage "Courage is when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" According to Atticus Finch, an honest lawyer in Harper Lee 's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. "Real courage" is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Harper Lee wants to tell us that it takes courage NOT to kill a mockingbird Courage and the symbol of the mockingbird are two of the most important, or in fact in my opinion the most important themes, which are addressed and displayed in the highly praised, but also controversial novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee. I will try to interpret these two motives and show how they are strongly connected to each other. There are many different types of courage and many people who all show it in their own personal way. If people talk about bravery and courage, they mostly think of the physical kind of courage. But there are also other kinds, which are often forgotten or cast aside by their big brother: moral and emotional courage.
"Jem, I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It 's when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. " This insightful statement was told by Atticus Finch to his son, Jem Finch. Many people in Maycomb had to deal with racism, hatred, and discrimination because of their skin color or because of the court case.
Mood gave the novel tension, surprise, and sadness which help make the novel more interesting and a meaningful theme. Imagery in the novel created a unique sense of language and created better images of moral courage of the characters. Harper Lee’s theme of moral courage in her novel To Kill A Mockingbird can be compared in reality in the same way. In reality, most people are treated unequally and the history of slaves are both compared with similarity in the novel. Moral courage can be anywhere, like in books and even in the real
In Harper Lee’s gothic-like novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a small, “old…tired town” (5) is portrayed by the narrator, Scout. As she and her brother grow up, they learn more about the world around them. Throughout experiences that teach the children important life lessons, Lee weaves in the theme of courage, developed by two significant literary strategies: conflict and symbolism. Harper Lee produces a character, Atticus. He is the loving father of Scout and Jem.
Courage is a huge theme in several English books. She used the theme in two pieces of text read in class To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee and Night by Ellie Wiesel. While looking at her work I noticed there was a large portion of text on her slides although all the text was relevant and explained what courage was which she described as having strength in the face of pain or death. While explaining courage, she used a direct quote from a character named
