Published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is seen as a book embedded into the American public school education system with good reasons. To Kill a Mockingbird symbolizes innocence, classism, and racism. We look through all of these statements from an 8 year old girl nicknamed Scout as she grows up during the Great Deppression, When Scout was around 7 years old, a trial shook the little town of Maycomb when a 19 year old girl accused a black man named Tom Robinson of raping her. Being set in the 1930’s when segregation was a prominent factor in America, With little evidence and witnesses Tom Robinson was still found guilty and was sentenced to death by electrocution. We can first start with the people of the trial, Walter Lett is the inspiration of Tom Robinson. Like Walter Lett, Tom was accused of rape by a poor white girl named Mayella Ewell; or Naomi Lowery. One of the main similarities is the actions that happened in the trial, especially with Naomi/Mayella. Like Naomi, In To Kill a Mockingbird, When Mayella was being questioned over and over by Atticus and Judge Taylor she started having bouts of rage and would never give clear evidence and sassed them out. Another example is the unstable evidence given to the court about what happened the “no hard evidence” in to To Kill a Mockingbird was the bruises and scars from the “rape” on Mayella. Mayella states that Tom beat her almost to fainting and left scars on the right side of her face when that couldn't have been possible, Tom Robinson’s left hand was severed in a cotton gin accident years ago meaning that the scars would have been made by someone
In The To Kill Mockingbird Tom Robinson was accused of rapping mayella ewell but he did not do it she tried to kiss him and first he a black man from what look like him kiss a white women so he said he just ran. Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
