These pens are very small but yet the horses are once again crammed together without food or water to await their death. Horses are a highly sensitive prey animal and must stand in fear as they can hear the terrified screams and smell the blood of the horses being slaughtered before them. After waiting in fear in the holding pens, the horses are one by one ran down an alley into the kill chute. In the kill chute many methods can be used to kill the animal. The most common method is a captive bolt gun, this gun is used to insert a metal rod into the brain of the horse to paralyze the animal rather than to kill it. Another method that is mostly used in Mexico uses a small knife which is repeatedly stabbed in the horse's spine which causes paralysis and eventually suffocation. After attempting to kill or sometimes successfully killing the horse, the animal is hung by one leg, the throat is slit open for the horse to bleed out, and then the horse is
Wild horse roundups became more frequent as the population of wild horses began to increase. The methods used for roundups included, “Using low flying planes and mounted armed cowboys, commercial contractors rounded up horses and reduced their numbers on the range” (Aksentijevich). Many times planes and helicopters fly low and while men on four-wheelers chase and spook the wild horses and separate them into groups, “The process includes chasing down entire herds with a helicopter, trapping them and separating the horses based on gender and age instead of by family units” (Boetel). This process takes the families of horses away from each other. Once they are separated, the horses are then put into corrals, feedlots, and other holding facilities,

A reason for a horse to be sent to a slaughterhouse is if it hasn’t already died from a terrible injury or because they are not winning and the owner/trainer does not want to put the time and effort into it anymore. In a slaughterhouse they don’t care if a horse is an all time champ or if it won a few races they are just there for the money. Workers at a slaughterhouse are not allowed to complain or report something because they will get fired (PETA). Slaughterhouses take in large groups of horses and go through one by one and kill them, they then take the meat and send it to different countries which will then sell it to be consumed by dogs and people.
