The book I chose to read is by Jessica Valenti, “He’s a Stud, She’s a Slut and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know.” Valenti is a feminist writer who has wrote several books regarding feminism. So, why is she a feminist? Jessica does not agree with the unfairness that is thrown our way in our day of time and believes that whether you agree or disagree with feminism, there are specific double standards and disparities that cannot be disregarded. Just like Jessica, I believe that we need to drop the barriers and move away from the double standards that are implanted into our society. The reason I chose this book is because I am a feminist. I believe that that there should be equality of the sexes and I do not believe that one gender …show more content…
This double standard ties in with the smart or pretty double standard. To simply put it, women can only be smart or pretty, they cannot be both. Men, on the other hand, can be smart and hot they do not have to pick between the two choices. We see this stereotype on television and in movies, but at this age in time many characters are starting to challenge this standard. For instance, in the beginning of the movie, “The House Bunny” the main character is seen as the hot girl with big boobs, but it is as if she does not have a brain. Towards the end of the movie she shows everyone that in fact she is smart despite what people thought. Regrettably, there are consequences to this stereotype. Women think that to be attractive they must be dumb or just outright not show how smart they really are. Jessica describes 35% of women admitted to pretending to be dumber than they actually were. Valenti suggests that we start letting girls know that they can be smart and look good simultaneously. We need to speak up when girls make smart …show more content…
Valenti (2008) states, “I hate the idea that women shouldn’t do things on their own (for safety reasons) or that if we do (like go to a bar alone) we’re pathetic” (p. 106). Apparently, if a girl is alone it means they are open for business meaning guys can come up to them without it being wrong, but if a guy is with the girl it means they are not open for business. Jessica points out that victim blaming is still ongoing when it comes down to rape victims, such as the woman was alone. It is the idea that women need to rely on men to be safe and do things. Thus, a designer invented a dress that can change into a vending machine costume that way women can be unrecognizable when walking home alone. Fortunately, women are defying this double standard. Women are now doing more on their own: traveling alone, eating alone, going to movies alone, living alone, etc. So, what to do? She explains that it is traditional stereotypes that are telling women they need to rely on men, but they do not need to. If you want to do something by yourself, do it. If you want to do something with another person, do it. Do not let living in fear control
Feminism is formally defined as the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. In short, this means females are fighting for their rights and to be treated the same as men. The novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God written by Zora Neale Hurston is based on the main character, Janie Crawford’s change that has led her to be autonomous. Janie is a young woman who learned many valuable lessons that helped her to make decisions for herself. Janie’s search for autonomy is intertwined with feminism due to Janie’s past, her previous marriages, and the display of sexism.
Throughout this chronological telling of Tina Fey’s life in Bossypants, much is argued. With the help of evidence and appeals of many forms, along with certain stylistic choices and organization, they are supported and explained. Many times in Bossypants Tina Fey talks about how different and difficult it is to be a woman in the TV and comedy industry and the expectations of what women should be and how they should act. Many different techniques are executed to do so, and they all work in conjunction to make sure most aspects of what she claims is supported.
All throughout time women have been treated differently from men. They were not given a voice or trust but was it for the better? I am deciding to defend feminist because women need to be treated better and in this essay i will show you how women were treated and why it 's wrong. Although i believe in defending feminism some believe women should not be treated equal. I am explaining this through showing that men were not expected to love their wives.
Growing up in Cuba, boys and girls were freely allowed to play with one another. Many girls would climb big trees to get fresh savory mangos. They would fall and scrape their knees while playing hide and seek and even play sports which were considered “manly”. Many girls preferred to work outside the house, they would perform jobs such as; repairing a broken fence or painting the house. Boys were never told not to play with the girls, in fact, they would also help out around the house and clean dishes after a meal.
When questioned about rape, especially most women, they might think or even picture a stranger coming out of a dark place to assault someone. But in reality there’s more to it. According to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, “About half of all people who are raped know the person who attacked them. This is known as date rape — forced sex that can happen not only on a date, but also somewhere like a party with someone the victim may know, like, or even be interested in.” Furthermore, social critic and feminist, Camille Paglia, has been discussing this persisting issue about date rape with a personal stance that many women may disagree with.
Men tend to not see women as powerful or as smart as we actually are. On the other hand, Men just have to put on a nice suit and have a good haircut to look like the CEO of a big company. Society has taught us that women should be used as objects and that is all we are, and that is definitely not true. Women are forced to live their lives revolving around men. Some women think we have to dress and act just to impress men.
Next, many gender and sexual stereotypes are perpetuated in media, through the ways of movies. In fact, the movie Legally Blonde fits under the category of stereotypes exceptionally well, since it shows many stereotypes of women in the society. For instance, there is one scene in the movie, where Warner, the handsome boy is playing football with his friends, and Elle, the dumb blonde sits on the sidelines to study and distract the guys playing as she wears nothing but a sparkly bikini top under a furry shawl on her upper half. This example evidently portrays the serotype of being a blonde dumb. Throughout the movie “Legally Blonde” Elle is shown as a material sorority girl, who is a duplicate copy of barbie in real life.
Throughout history, women have made a name for themselves. By rising up and fighting for something that they believed in, the Mirabal sisters made a name for themselves in the Dominican Republic and in Julia Alvarez’s novel In the Time of the Butterflies. By applying a theory to a novel, readers can relate the book to the world they are living in today (Davidson). Feminism can be defined as a dynamic philosophy and social movement that advocates for human rights and gender equality (“Feminism”). Feminist Theory involves looking at how women in novels are portrayed, how female characters are reinforcing stereotypes or undermining them, and the challenges that female characters face (Davidson).
Camille Paglia, a humanities professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and cultural critic for the San Francisco Examiner, wrote an article entitled “On Date Rape” to share her opinion on the stance of women when it comes to dating culture and rape. Paglia claims her generation was the one that “broke the rules” and paved way for “freedoms” for women, but insinuates that women now do not want to take responsibility for the risks that follow these “freedoms” (142). In her discussion of the topic, she exhibits a myriad of fallacious statements and weaknesses, which conceivably challenges her position as a feminist. Her conclusions question her credibility and sensitivity to the issue and do not make a convincing argument. Throughout
• Feminism is about contesting systemic inequalities, and seeking equal treatment and opportunity for both genders. • Feminism is not against marriage but respect individual informed choice and does not believe in double standard in judging a person’s conduct. • Feminists acknowledge that equal rights translate into equal accountability. Although feminism continues to be non-monolithic and contentious, it has made several progress and created new worlds of possibility for working women, education, empowerment and even arts.
The feminist theory is based on finding and exposing negative attitudes toward women in literature. Their goal is to reveal the reality of how women get portrayed in literature due to the fact that most literature presents an inaccurate view of women and are most of the time minimized. In the Catcher in the Rye there is a few female characters such as Sunny, the girls at the club, and Sally who are put in situations that show nothing but stereotypes and puts them in a bad spot throughout the novel. J.D Salinger decides to put some of the female characters in situations that can cause those who read this novel to think bad or leave readers with a bad image of women. This bad image on women is due to the fact that he decided to portray some of
Women are complex human beings who cannot be compartmentalized. All women have different characteristics, emotions, thoughts, feelings, dreams, and desires. Women are not simple so they cannot be categorized. Women are reduced to their sexuality. Society views a woman 's worth as their sex lives and how they present themselves in terms of dress.
In this week's journal I will be discussing; The Opening of the Black Panther movie and how the movie is more women ordination and the overall power that women held in these positions, and what ways black women excellence is shown in the movie. The main character may be the king T'challa who is the king of wakanda, but the women were the true focus on the film, and are extraordinary. These women are extraordinary based around the fact that. None of these women have superpowers during the movie and don't let this fact deter them from the task that they take on.
From the outset, literature and all forms of art have been used to express their author’s feelings, opinions, ideas, and believes. Accordingly, many authors have resorted to their writing to express their feminist ideas, but first we must define what feminism is. According to the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, feminism is “the belief that women should be allowed the same rights, power, and opportunities as men and be treated in the same way, or the set of activities intended to achieve this state”. As early as the fifteenth century is possible to find feminist writings. Centuries later, and although she never referred to herself as one, the famous English writer Virginia Woolf became one of the greatest feminist writers of the twentieth
Rebecca West once said, “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat”; feminism and other social issues are fundamental to literature, with them commonly being a driving force behind both modern and classic works of fiction. Feminism is everywhere, with women still fighting for gender equality in modern day Britain as demonstrated through Emma Watson’s United Nations speech which was broadcasted in September of 2014 where she differentiates feminism from ‘man-hating’. Feminism has developed considerably over time as general attitudes have been swayed through literature, political movements and women’s portrayal of themselves. In 1847, Charlotte Bronte released her novel ‘Jane Eyre’ which was viewed as very radical for its time as Bronte uses Jane to exhibit her resentment towards society. Jane is presented as a morally strong, determined character who, when she falls in love, embraces the notion instead of the label and profits which are associated with it; she states that she “cares for [her]self” and that “more unsustained [she is], the more [she] will respect [her]self” as she is not tempted away from her self-respect.
