Soccer Scholarship Essay

In the transition of recreational soccer to competitive soccer, many aspects of the game changed. The game got faster, the girls get meaner, and a leader had to rise. Leaders are hardworking, responsible, and possibly a role model to others around them. Stripping on the blue captains band, either resting at the top of where my sock folds or molding the shape of my arm, is how I have shown leadership in the eight years of playing competitive soccer. The captains band represents an intuition of the burning desire to lead a group of young women throughout the duration of a ninety-minute game.

I wish I could include a picture of me playing soccer with this essay because that was all I did from age five to fifteen. Soccer was life for ten years so most people are surprised to hear that the fall of my senior year in high school I will Captain of my high school Cross Country team. How I became Captain of a running sport is an accomplishment I never saw coming. If you had asked me in elementary school, middle school, or even my first two years of high school if I would do anything but play soccer I would have said never. I am the youngest of three boys.

I used to run down the sideline shaking the goal jar, now I run around with a cash box at every school event asking for donations for the senior class. I’ve realized that some things never actually change, they just evolve to become something bigger. As an in-coming freshman who hadn’t played on a school team in middle school, I was at a disadvantage because I was behind in skills and didn’t know many of the tricks. Fortunately, the coach saw my potential and I made the varsity team. My coaches and teammates continually pushed me and helped me become an even better player than I was before. Over the course of my four years on the team, I faced several obstacles that made me feel weak and inadequate, but to overcome them I reminded myself that I loved soccer. The biggest obstacle I faced was getting a concussion my junior year.

This has given me the opportunity to share my love of the sport that I have been playing my entire life. On the field, I am able to lead by example by always working hard, playing fair and encouraging my teammates. My leadership position allowed me to teach my teammates what I know about soccer, inspire them to work hard to reach their goals, and help create a more positive soccer community. As a captain, I have set an effective role model for my team and other female athletes at our school. Due to my leadership in school and on the field, I earned the Union League of Philadelphia/Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association Good Citizen Award.

Through the adversities that accompany senior year, I have worked hard to propel my academic career, develop my leadership, and to have a successful soccer season. I recently had a conversation with the instructional superintendent, Anthony Smith, and he equated high school with a 400 meter race. As the race concludes and fatigue attacks, I continue to sprint towards my objectives. In the first semester, I applied to seven universities and I was admitted to all of them. I decided and committed to Colorado State University.

“Congratulations, this is the 2013-2014 Mission Vista Men’s Varsity Soccer team.” I still remember the words coming out of my high school coach’s mouth as he spoke to the new varsity team after tryouts. I was the shortest and one of the youngest players on the team, but my passion for the game was not any less than anyone on the team. I was one of the only three sophomores on the team with a team dominated by juniors and seniors.

Now as I am a junior this year, I will be faced with the challenge of having to be a leader for our soccer team. This is my third year playing soccer, and I will have to lead our underclassmen in a positive and respectful manner. The 3 major position zones are Defense, Midfield and Forward/Striker. Of all the positions involved, the midfielder requires the most preparation as he/she will be the one on the ball 70-80 percent of the time. For many years I was interested in becoming the greatest soccer player in the world but I practiced only like once every two weeks.
