Marxism is the ideology created by Karl Marx which advocated for the destruction of capitalism in any society. This ideology first came up in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Marxism is the ideology that any form of superiority should not exist and has been tied to other social rights movements and ideologies. One of the most famous books to talk about this include “The Grapes of Wrath”, “The Great Gatsby”, and “Twenty Years at Hull House”. All three of these examples were written and published in the first quarter of the twentieth century. In “The Great Gatsby” we see the protagonist, Nick Carraway, introduce the idea of social and economic disparity. Jane Addams was a civil rights activists during the first part of the twentieth century in the United States. She alongside a friend named Ellen Gates Starr opened a community home in Chicago. The mission of the Hull-House was to provide housing and job opportunities for the poor and immigrants in Chicago. We see this when Jane Addams says, “I cannot see them without a bitter unconsciousness that it was at their expense I learned life cannot be administered by defined rules and regulations. (Addams)” In this quote Jane Addams is referring to some children living at the Hull-House whose father had died due to work conditions. The father of the children she is referring too died due to poor work conditions that many poor people had to face when working. These children showed Jane Addams that not every place of work offers the correct and that social and economic classes affect the conditions of life a person faces. This proves that uppers classes do not initially understand why an issue is an issue for those that are not of the same social or economic class. The man that died did so because of poor work conditions while working and Jane Addams did not understand why he continued to work. The man died after only a few days of working in the canal but he was able to provide money for his family while he was alive. The love and dedication that this man had for …show more content…
In “To Kill a Mockingbird” the protagonist is a young girl named Jean Louise Finch also known as Scout. She has an older brother named Jem and she grows up in Alabama. During the events in the book Scout is surrounded by African Americans in a society that is openly racist and does not hide the fact that they are. We see this when Harper Lee writes, “There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins. They’re ugly, but these are the facts of life.(Lee)” This quote blatantly says that in a courtroom a white man’s word is more important than a black man’s word. This can imply that a white man could lie and still be considered the truth because the white man’s words are more valuable. This is a prime example of systematic racism and how some societies do not try to hide it. It is a well known fact in Maycomb County in Alabama that a black man’s word is not as important as a white man’s word. Since this book is about the trail of a black man who was accused of crimes in a prominently racist community and Scout was raised by a mostly anti-racism family we can infer that the story follows Scout’s controversial
We have not wrecked, nor corrupted legislature, nor done many unholy things that men have done; but then we must remember that we have not had the chance. ’- Jane Addams.” (weebly.com). This quote showed how much she believed in equality for all, even for the smallest things. Addams also fought for the improvement of education and so everyone could get free education.
Jane Addams became a journalist because she wanted to help with the women’s history. She believed that women’s votes will provide the margin necessary to pass social legislation.
Throughout her writing “The Subjective Necessity for Social Settlements” she reiterated the she felt that everyone knows that something needs to be done, but no one was doing anything. She could not enjoy her life of luxury knowing that those around her didn’t even have their basic needs. Addams said that “Nothing so deadens the sympathies and shrivels the power of enjoyment as the… continual ignoring of the starvation struggle which makes up the life of at least
Jane Addams once firmly stated, "Unless our conception of patriotism is progressive, it cannot hope to embody the real affection and the real interest of the nation. " Her mission was to keep the people 's interest in the eyes of the country and to help them progress as a society in the wake of the corrupted Gilded Age. With the American people in the grasps of big industries and immigrants looking for a better life struggled in a nation where the dollar sign was held over politicians and the middle class and poor people, they needed help. Jane Addams, a kind woman who established a settlement house for the poor nineteenth ward of Chicago, had an astounding influence upon American society through social reforms in urban cities and influence
To Kill a Mockingbird is an important text worthy of all the recognition it received in the time following its original publication. A prime piece of fine American literature based in a period of extreme racial segregation and inequality. Set in a southern town of Maycomb Alabama during the depression, Lee follows three years of the life of eight-year-old Scout (Jean Louise) Finch and her older brother Jem (Jeremy) Finch as their father is, for three years, a fundamental figure in a case that had punctured the town as a result of the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man. As the years commence/continue, Scout and Jem, alongside the audience grow increasingly aware of prejudice throughout society as they learn the importance of perspective and being courageous when faced with adversity. By illustrating the influence of prejudice on society, Harper Lee challenges the perspectives of society, criticizing the nature of humankind to stereotype and be prejudice towards one another and in doing so, she successfully convinces the author to look beyond the facade society creates and locate the humanity that is concealed within everybody.
In fact, her own father was Addams’ greatest influence and she grew up only knowing what he taught her. When she was just a little girl, her father told her that, “...it was important for those who have enough
Carnegie’s ostentatious vanity indicates that he reaps pride from his attempt at improving society, which serves the explicit goal of “dignify[ing] his own life” (“Wealth”). Although Addams stresses the importance of unity and the interdependency of the classes (226), it is important to point out that she opened the Hull House in response to the uselessness she felt following a
Addams having quickly found out that needs of the neighborhood couldn 't be met unless the city and state rules were reformed . addams challenge both boss rule in the immigrant neighborhood of hull house and indifferences to needs of the poor in the state legislature. While she was in london she visited the toynbee hull. Sh was inspired by this. She then created the Hull House.
She seperated herself from what society belived a women should do and created many radical changes for that time period. Many of her fellow friends, characterized as going crazy and too hopeful. But in the years later to come, Jane Addams would redefine what a women can and should do. She once said, “Old-fashioned ways which no longer apply to changed conditions are a snare in which the feet of women have always become readily entangled” (JaneAddams). With this, Jane Addams shaped the progressive era by limiting/abolishing the amount of work hours people
"We stand here today united in a belief in beauty, genius, and courage, and that these can transform the world" Jane Addams was an incredible woman who helped make the changes in child labor laws and the rights of workers that occurred during the Progressive Era. She took action to get corporations to raise wages and improve workplace quality for poor Americans, even though she herself was rich. She fought to make America go through an evolution both mentally and physically by making people aware of the struggles of working immigrants and making sure changes happened to keep workers safe as they provided for their families. Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois. Because her father, John Addams, was a moderately wealthy politician and businessman,
The website wordpress made an article about the social classes in the Great Gatsby, talking about the differences and similarities that both social classes in the book have with each other, from the good things, to all their flaws. “All the characters do not suffer due to lack of funds in life, but from key dimensions within themselves”(wordpress, Poverty in Great Gatsby). All of the characters in the Great Gatsby have some form of funds in their life, but each of them are devoid of certain key aspects of their personality. One of them could have a lack of social wealth, such as Jay Gatsby. Everyone is wealthy and poor, and when this was brought out to the public when this novel was published, this redefined poverty, and wealth as a whole.
The American Dream is the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success, prosperity, and social mobility through hard work, determination, and initiative. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby attempts to achieve social mobility but ultimately fails due to the constructs of old vs new money. An argument is shown that the American Dream is just that, a dream, and that happiness cannot be achieved through wealth. In the novel, the super poor are stuck in their social class, unable to move because they live in the valley of ashes, which represents poverty and the corruption and social decay that came with the lavish and careless lifestyles of the rich.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel that show the life of a southern state od Alabama during the “black racism” time period, where majority of the people had the mentality that (quote) with the exception of a few. To chosen to portray it from the eyes of Scout Finch, from a child’s point of view. Living in Maycomb, in the midst of a conservative society of the 1930’s and 20’s Southern America Scout Finch is an extra ordinary child.
For example in the book, *The Great Gatsby, by *Scott Fitzgerald, depicts how these inequalities happen through its main character Gatsby. Throughout the 1920's people focused on getting rich instead of striving for equality as shown in The Great Gatsby, by Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald shows that people are yet not treated fairly and that social discrimination still exists. For example, in Chapter 2, Tom goes to see Wilson, a poor mechanic worker. He tells him he is going to sell him his old car, but his purpose is to distract Wilson so he can have an affair with his(wilson's) wife, Myrtle.
In society, there are very few people who have the unwavering dedication to stand up for what they believe. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a black man was convicted and accused of a crime he didn 't commit, raping a white women, which is not in anyway tolerable in society. In Harper Lee 's To Kill A Mockingbird, the author used point of view and symbolism to acknowledge how the the several social divisions which make up much of the adult world are shown to be both irrational and extremely destructive. To begin with, the short story To Kill A Mockingbird, used point of view to show how the many social divisions in the world are irrational and destructive.
