Social Worker Career

I have struggled to keep my school work a priority as I need to balance it with my part-time work and with the things I like to do to keep my life as normal as possible (like cheerleading and spending time with my friends). I am very honored and thankful to be the first the person in my family to attend college fall of 2016. As I strive to end my senior year positive, I always remember to tell my younger siblings to try as hard as they can in school, because “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I’ve decided that I would like to get my degree in social work, specifically working with children. Growing I’ve been around kids that are unhappy with thier home, but couldn’t do anything about it.

The letter that is written and submitted by Beatrice Farnsworth to the Social Work Department is in retaliation of my response to her email that I was including in. I responded by requesting a changed from NHelp. I felt that I am singled out and targeted. I knew from the initial interview with her that it would not work. I voice my concerns and I was told to try and make it works

Occupational Therapy is the Career for Me For most of my childhood I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian or a nurse. I knew from the beginning that I had a heart for helping people and animals. Once I was in high school my dream of becoming a veterinarian and nurse slowly disappeared, but I still knew I wanted a career that focused on helping people though. That is when I started researching different types of careers that were in the health field and I stumbled upon occupational therapy.

This path has more stress and a tendency to overload the workloads, so I would have to learn to manage my stress and workload to avoid future problems. Burnout is common in social work, and being poorly paid will not help motivate workers. So, although this career path requires fewer steps academically, it requires more durability emotionally and mentally. Working in the social service field is also an option. Two years later, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. I applied for a Family Service worker position at an elementary school and got an interview. When I was in the Interview, one of the questions the interviewers asked was Why do you want to practice social work, and why do you want to work with children. I told them of my family’s past experience with foster care, and about this awesome social service worker.

“A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds” (“Child Abuse Statistics”). Social workers help the children who are abused get out of their unsafe homes and getting them proper education and care. As one prepares for a future in the field of social work, one must consider the job description, educational requirements, the NASW Code of Ethics, the duties and responsibilities, the type of social work, the work environment, and the wages and benefits. There are many different types of social workers, but they all have one thing in common: helping people. Social workers help with people's problems ranging from mentally, emotionally, physically, or even just helping with their daily lives.

It has always been my passion to care for people. I would like to take my passion for nursing to a higher educational and professional level. My career goal and dream is to become a nurse practitioner for geriatric patients with an emphasis in palliative/hospice care. Through the years, I have been able to make advances toward my dream. While in my undergraduate career, I chose the field of Social Work because I felt a desire to help people.

After this assignment I have learned that Department of Social Services provides a lot of different services to those in need. Just from hearing and reading stories those who work in the field of Social Services aren’t always given a good rep, especially those who work in Child Protective Services. From doing this interview I was pleasantly surprised as to how much work Social Workers do to provide children with a safe and stable environment. There is a lot that goes into what they do every day. I have always known I want to work with children.

Modern social workers are frequently tasked with certain objectives by their agencies, which leave little room for any work beyond specific treatments and timeframes (Gitterman & Knight, 2016). Although social workers are bound to the set of ethics put forth by the NASW, practitioners are often limited to focusing on the issues of the individual rather than the larger societal issues that may be behind those concerns. Additionally, many social work students end up working in direct practice, rather than macro work. There is a need for social workers to engage at the macro level in order to facilitate community organization and empowerment. Critics suggest this theory may not take into account the unique experiences of each individual and perhaps key characteristics of the individual or group are not taken into consideration (Sadan, 1997).

Personal Statement Social work by definition means, “any work or service carried out by trained personnel with the aim of alleviating the conditions of those in need of help or welfare”. There are several aspects in my life that motivate me to be a social worker and to perform social work. My uncle motivates me to do social work because he was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a brain disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. His diagnoses enlightened my entire family on how mental disorders can affect a person.

Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. I am especially interested in working in child welfare along with terminally ill children. I have got to a stage in my career where I have started to search out instruction that will make me more efficient in creating plans and providing services for vulnerable people.

My belief is that interventions can be put in place along with social programs giving them the best opportunity to flourish. Another population that holds a special place in my heart is the geriatric population. I believe that it my duty to help the population that has once cultivate our society to adjust to and cope with problems they may experience. In addition to working with children and geriatrics I have also worked with people who were diagnosed with Post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer 's disease to name a few. These experiences have allowed me to understand the role of a social worker, as I have opportunity to be exposed to multi-disciplinary treatment teams.

I want to strive to be a better person, so I could make a change in a young person’s life and know when I go home on a night, that I made a difference and that's why I want to pursue my career as a social worker. When I realized that I wanted to be a social worker, I was in my junior year of high school. I knew I wanted to help people, children especially, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to go into. I thought I wanted to be in Neonatology or another profession like it. When I first witnessed a social worker, I was getting a treatment in the hospital and saw a social worker working with a family who child had a broken pelvis.

For the past three years I have been working in the social care field and working with vulnerable adults, ranging from, learning disabilities, the elderly, patients suffering from dementia and other vulnerable adults with minor and complicated issues. Dealing with vulnerable adults it has made me realise how important it is for me to become an Adult Social Worker. I am passionately interested in listening to people’s problems and finding strategies to help them and making a difference in their lives. Growing up in Zimbabwe, I spent the early years of my young and teenage days living with an extended family, seeing how members of my family were being treated has made me choose a career in Adult Social work. I look forward to gaining skills and knowledge that will assist me with becoming a successful social worker. I love the versatility of the field and that it allows me to work in many different dimensions. A career in social work gives me the opportunity to evaluate programs, groups, and services needed and used in the community. I also love to
