As Ray Bradbury once said, “ You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.” Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury is a fictional novel about a fireman named Guy Montag. This fireman has one job not to extinguish fires, but to start them himself. In Montag’s society it is against the law to read books for the information they carry is dangerous. Ever since the houses were declared fire proof the government assigned this new task to fireman. If you were found with a book in your possession the book along with your house would go up in flames. If a fireman had possession of a book he/she would get a 24 hour timespan to burn the books themselves. In this time period the captain sends a mechanical hound that kills or imputes the target. Anyone from today’s society would think that they couldn’t be …show more content…
Thats a mistake Montag’s society has similar technology as us for example, Montage explains, “Late in the night Montag looked over at Mildred she was awake. There was a tiny dance of melody in the air, her seashell was in her ear again”(Bradbury 42). Those seashells are common earbuds today, the way she had them in her ears and was listening to music at the sametime. People in today’s society also go to sleep while listening to music. To demonstrate, Montag put into words, “They had this machine. They had to machines really. One of them slid down into your stomach like a black cobra down and sucked out the green matter while the other one replaced the infected blood”(Bradbury 14). Here Mildred tried to commit suicide by overdosing on pills. There are some cases in today’s society where people overdose as she did. In both societies they use a stomach pumping machine to clean out the blood and replace it saving a life. Technology is advancing in every society, there is no limit and never will
Within the first book of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the fireman Guy Montag had changed to a societal outcast through questioning the conformity ingrained into his mind. After burning a woman for refusing to leave behind her books, Montag talked with his wife Mildred about why she would essentially commit suicide for books. In this epiphany, he realizes “‘There must be something in books, things we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house” to which Mildred then replies “She was simple-minded.” (48). Because Montag burned this woman, unlike the rest of society shown in the microcosm of his wife, he begins to question the illegality of books instead of adamantly questioning the criminal.
After Montag read the books, despite his wife’s lack of interest, he realizes he needs help understanding the material, what it means, and why books are outlawed. He remembers an old man named Faber, an old English professor, whom he had met before the ban of books. Montag speaks to Faber after multiple tries, and eventually convinces Faber to help him by putting an earpiece in Montag’s ear to give guidance. Again, I would do the same thing if I was in Montag’s situation.
There is no such thing as a Utopian society. In Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” the main character, Guy Montag lives in a society where books are banned, Creative thinking is prohibited, and firemen start fires. The government who run this city have brainwashed every citizen to think that they live in a perfect civilization, when in reality they are living as mindless beings. Deep down, the people of the city know there is something wrong with their lifestyle, but their minds are so influenced by the government that they do not allow themselves to feel those negative feelings. The society portrayed in this novel is almost the complete opposite from modern society today.
(AGG) In the course of Fahrenheit 451, we can clearly see that the society Montag is living in very faulty. (BS-1) Montag believes that his own society is working fine. However this is because he is unaware of critical things in a human society.(BS-2)
Bradbury even goes as far as showing Montag’s wife, Mildred, as a completely brainwashed perfect societal figure. “She was an expert at lip-reading from ten years of apprenticeship at Seashell ear-thimbles.”

Dystopian society Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is meant to portray a dystopian society. Everyone is considered conformist, instead of independent. A factor in a dystopian society is everyone agreeing with each other, and not having a say in basically anything. Deciding who becomes the president in Montag’s society is not a reliable and accurate process. As Mrs. Bowles is explaining how she decides who, and the rest of her friends want as president she says “‘compare Winston Noble to Herbert Hoag for ten seconds and you can almost figure out the results”’( 97).Where Montag lives, being independent contributes to dystopia.
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is a uniquely shocking and provocative novel about a dystopian society set in a future where reading is outlawed, thinking is considered a sin, technology is at its prime, and human interaction is scarce. Through his main protagonist, Guy Montag, Bradbury brings attention to the dangers of a controlled society, and the problems that can arise from censorship. As a fireman, it is Guy's job to destroy books, and start fires rather than put them out. After meeting a series of unusual characters, a spark is ignited in Montag and he develops a desire for knowledge and a want to protect the books. Bradbury's novel teaches its readers how too much censorship and control can lead to further damage and the repetition of history’s mistakes through the use of symbolism, imagery, and motif.
What society can do to your way of thinking is really scary. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, Mildred is controlled by society. Montag thinks about his wife Mildred. One reason that Montag is feeling bad is because he sees Mildred as uncaring about things and that she is self-centered. Mildred is self-centered because of the way society has shaped.
