Standardized Testing Pros And Cons

Schools are giving out too many standardized tests. It’s not only robbing them of their time, but it’s also causing stress and anxiety and going into far levels. Students need to be focusing on their learning academics and preparing for their future. Taking unuseful tests are not only pointless, but they put too many kids/teens into anxiety and even depression.

Standardized testing not only stresses out students, but it also leads the teachers to go in a dilemma whether to focus on the curriculum or to get students ready for the standardized testing. No one has ever enjoyed taking a test in his or her entire educational history. Similarly Mr. Estrada’s 4th grade class was not every excited about taking standardized test. Each student has his or her own level of learning. As the students were taking the test, I noticed some students were panicking, while others were confused.

Since 2006, overall SAT scores have dropped by 21 points. It is safe to say that the increase in standardized testing has done more bad than good. When standardized testing became more prominent, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) saw a plateau in reading and math scores. Additionally, the NAEP saw no further closure in the test score gap. The test score gap affects all minorities.

State standardized tests are exams students take to assess their schools, teachers, and what they learned in their year. Many parents and teachers deem these tests useless and see it as an unnecessary stress added to their child’s life. Students should not be taking this exam because it causes a major curriculum gaps between students, causes stress and loss of interest in school, and after almost a full year of learning, this test is supposed to determine a student 's knowledge of the year’s curriculum. Although some say this test prepares students for college, the stress and loss of interest in school caused by this test and test prep can affect student’s mental health and grades. State tests cause stress and anxiety in students, especially lower performing students because of the pressure of making sure all students, regardless of ability, reaches the same level.

To begin, standardized testing puts a lot of unhealthy stress on students and gives them even more problems to worry about. Many students find standardized testing to be extremely stressful and can lead to faulty habits. For example, decrease in importance of high-stakes and use diverse strategies. Most of the disadvantages of it effects the school, teachers, and students as a whole not just individually. Many problems have occurred from these tests such as test taking anxiety, competition between teachers, racial and poverty inequalities, and devotion towards tests. These reasons show how standardized tests are not helping schools and students, but, hurting them.

The education system in the United States of America is frequently questioned, as well as the systems that have been put in place to try and repair it. The schools in the U.S. have learned to depend on standardized testing too much to the point that it is harmful to the students. Today teachers encourage students to be themselves and become their best self and make them conform to national standards all in one breath. Some of the main problems with standardized testing are: the reforms don’t work for the people that need it most, and the nation relies too much on test scores.

The purpose of standardized tests is to evaluate students individually and as a whole through academics. When students don 't try their best, their full capabilities and knowledge aren 't reflected by the test scores collected making it hard for educators to gage what needs or doesn 't need improvement.

So that is why schools should not be giving test that don’t really do anything to the students. First off this standardized testing is giving the students too much stress. Students especially feel the stress when there is something meaningful tied to them meaning that some parents threaten to take away something that they value

So in conclusion i feel Standardized tests can hinder more than help our students by limiting teaching, creating stress when it comes to graduating, putting a limit on learning for the student and teaching for the teachers. We need to have a second look at the real benefit of Standardized tests and if it is worth our students self
