I chose careers in fitness because I want to have a career in fitness myself. The career in fitness I chose and want to peruse in is sports physician. It is a great job to have because sports physicians have a lot of travel opportunities with the sports team they work with. Sport physicians must be wherever the game is to assist the players. Athletes going to college at the professional level will frequently travel around the world. Physicians will often work with star athletes. Although it is exciting, you must remain confident and focused. In pro sports, the sports medicine specialist is working with a particularly demanding clientele. This specialization is also a high risk, high expense area for athletes and career threatening injuries. Through 2004, there were 200,000 injury reports filed when an athlete misses a day or more of practice or competition, which works out to about 12,500 injuries per year. That’s a lot of patient interviews everyday. Some sports physicians will do countless physical examinations everyday, and also try to obtain the patients medical history as well to help them to try and figure out if that injury was preventable or it was just an accident. If an athlete every gets injured then as a physical therapist will assist them and rehabilitate them back to normal. Knowing that I can help an athlete get back on their feet and continue their sport is a great feeling. Helping others in general. The hours physical therapist work depends on the person, but it 's generally hours in the day. They work about 8 to 9 hours.
However, I want to do more I want to be able to follow the process from beginning to end and do the evaluations. I want to be able to do the testing and the measuring. I have set out on this journey of health care because I want to help people go from post-operative to back to fully functioning with realistic goals in place. I want to be able to walk the journey with the patients and let them know that they are not on it alone. Through Physical Therapy I feel that patients get more than just rehabilitation of an injury or surgery but they get a change in mindset from injured to functioning independently again as they did before.
Many Athletic Trainers only go through four years of college to receive their Bachelors Degree (“Athletic Trainers and Exercise Physiologists: Occupational Outlook Handbook:: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics”). If they want to become even more successful and progress further into their field of work they will continue their education and receive their Masters Degree from an accredited college. Next, they then have to receive a certification test to become certified and licensed. Then once they receive all this education and certifications then they can proceed into their field of work.
College athletes put their bodies and health on the line for the fans' entertainment and for their future. If they have a career ending injury they need a litte money to fall back on. The Cardinal states, “If you look at the overall percentage of college player injuries across all sports both major and minor, a whopping 90% of college athletes report they have been injured whilst playing and a whopping 54% say they have continued playing after being injured” (Blake). College athletes know that every time they take the field, court, or arena that there is a chance they could get hurt. Lots of people say that it’s the athletes choice to play because they know the risks.
The increase of student-athletes is one reason for the greater job demand. It is also a very important job within the health care system. They have to have a good rapport with physicians and Physical Therapist so they are able to refer the athletes to the proper medical field when necessary. Athletic Trainers must have knowledge not only of the human body and how it works, but have an understanding of sports and its demand of the body. They must be able to communicate with the student-athlete to educate them on injury prevention and injury healing.
After completing my bachelor’s degree, I will take the necessary classes required by my state and the National Board of Emergency Medicine, so that I may obtain my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification. Obtaining my EMT certification and working in that field will be beneficial to me when it comes to being an Athletic Trainer. I have always had a passion for helping people, and a passion for the healthcare field. About me: My name is Summer Hill, I am a Certified Athletic Therapist CAT(C) and hold a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education (BHPE) degree. During my education, I was able to work with a variety of varsity athletes primarily with the St. Mary’s University Men’s Basketball team and the University of Calgary Dino’s Football Team. Working closely with the teams in the pre-season, in-season, and off-season managing injuries and providing support during their strength and conditioning. Colleges are scouting or looking at kids from the age of ten years old. For March Madness (college basketball tournament) a student athlete would miss up to six days of class that they would have to make up later on, due to traveling and having to be with the team. Football player dedicate 43.3 hours of their own life to college sports. Whether it’s going to the weight room, film sessions, or just putting some type of work for the team. It is also more common for athletes who play football or basketball to go pro than in any other college sport.
In this case, you would want to earn a clinical and master degree in sports psychology. This would help me earn more respect on my resume. With this degree, you could work with higher level athletes and universities. Additionally, you would need to join internships with sports performance to help increase my experience within the field of work. This means that a sport psychologist would have to get hands-on action or follow a mentor within private practice.
But I understood it could give me other opportunities in life, like for example a scholarship in the United States. In a world full of athletes a Physical therapist is a very viable asset to any athlete’s road to fame, because they provide support to the player, keep them healthy and in shape, and prepares them to get back on the field. As a Sports therapist you will work with athletes and exercise participants in order to help prevent, recognise, manage injuries and treat them if they should occur, and then rehabilitate the patient back to full fitness. Using the principles of exercise science, they incorporate physiological and pathological processes to make sure patients are training and competing safely and provide an immediate response when athletic related injuries occur. Work can be found in sports injury clinics or directly with a sports club or even as a personal therapist for an athlete, either professional or amateur.
