"He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life."-Muhammad Ali. In my book, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher this quote is perfect. This is about a girl who was burned when she was younger. Everyone thinks the burns are from a pot of spaghetti but only a selected few know that her dad actually did it. Sarah is so scared of her dad that she is staying in a hospital and is refusing to talk. Eric Calhoune knows the true identity if the burns and refuses to stay on the sideline. Him, his friend and his teacher get Sarah Byrnes out of the hospital to look for her mom. But Sarah's crazy dad, Virgil knows something up. After it all Virgil gets caught and Sarah lives happily with Mrs Lemry. My thesis is "who shows courage in Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes?"

He was the main character and displayed so much courage. It was very hard to narrow down by quotes but I went with these. "I'm not telling you. Mr Mautz, this man has threatened me to my face and over the telephone. You don't have any idea what he is capable of doing. But I do, and he knows I do. I do Mr. Byrnes. And if something happens to me everyone will know. I don't know how you fooled Mr. Mautz, but I'll bet it wasn't hard. I'm not fooled though. Pg. 173-174 To me this quote is very important because he is deathly afraid of Mautz and Virgil but he stands up to them because he doesn't want to expose Sarah. In the novel Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes, Eric Calhoun and his best friend Steve Ellerby butt heads with their classmate Mark Brittain. They all take a controversial class, Contemporary American Thought, where they discuss topics like abortion, suicide, religion, body image and social justice. Interestingly, the sup-plot of this book lends itself to the subject of morality. It shows how religion shapes a person 's moral values. Mark Brittain is a devout Christian, who has strong, self-righteous ideas about religion and abortion.

In this essay I will be telling you about three examples of courage from the book “Staying fat for Sarah Byrnes”. I will start with a quote from the end of the book on page 290, Dayle says “He’s got all the respect I have”. Within the real world people need courage to do most things, if it’s to talk to a new friend, go on that new ride, or just talk to the person you like. It takes courage to stand up for yourself, shown on page 62). Also on page 62, courage is demonstrated because sarah says “God, your stupid” to Dale.
Her best friend, Eric, is the complete opposite, until one day when Sarah stops talking. Nobody knows why she stopped talking. She just did. Sarah has awful scars all over her face. She tells everyone that they were from boiling spaghetti noodles that she knocked over when she was younger.

Sarah decides to forgive Coalhouse and they rejoin in their love. Later Sarah hears of a campaign rally and goes in search of help. She is mistaken for a would-be assassin and is beaten to death. Act II opens and Coalhouse is a shell of the man he once was. He is causing term-oil out of his grief and the Family is stuck in the middle of it all.
Anne Frank was a living example of it. During her time in the Annex, Anne stayed strong and kept living life despite the threat hanging over her. She said that all people were kind because of her determined attitude. Even if she didn’t actually believe what she was saying, she had to put her best foot forward and keep going. The movie “ The long walk Home ” provided the viewer with multiple major characters that seemed to be courageous, like Odessa who stood up for herself in the face of a white dominated society. Although, as courageous as Odessa was, she did fail to outmatch Miriam as the most courageous character in the movie because Miriam was able to not only defend herself but defend others as well, she also breaks stereotypical ideas of woman in 1955, as well as remain unfearful throughout the movie. For example, as explained before Miriam Thompson broke through stereotypical ideas that were held over woman. These stereotypical ideas were that a woman should stay home, take care of the kids, clean up, as well as treat her husband well by making him breakfast and tending to him after a long day of work.
