Stereotypes: Cajuns Of New Orleans

Stereotype: A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Stereotypes have been around forever. Whether it be the strong, muscular, handsome, men in the 1800’s. Or the popular, pretty, girls you see in school hallways today. They are all stereotypes.

This is an area of history that has rarely been explored in such depth and nuance. Similar to other chapters, there is a large amount of cataloging of the origins of different custom, their transformations through time, and intersections with historical events. In these sections we are treated to stories of the interior life of many communities and their tradition-making in an intimate and spontaneous fashion. Each anecdote contributes to a fuller picture of the meaning of Carnival in Louisiana. One such tale showcases the resilience of Mardi Gras, when in 2014 the commitment to celebration was tested in the St. Mary Parish.

Additionally, scientists had been warning New Orleans and the government that climate change would lead to increased storm activity and that the city’s defenses weren’t strong enough for such a storm. However, these warnings were ignored by the government and no preventative measures were taken which has influenced the effects of the storm. The reason for the poor response of the government and their negligence of the warnings is arguable. However, it is positive that the reason for this is that the majority of the people affected were the poor, and mostly colored, citizen of New Orleans. The city is racially and economically segregated and these citizen lived in the lower parts of the city, which go down to 11 feet below sea level.

The problem surrounds the culture, how New Orleans has come to treat the culture that put them on the map in a sense and how the monetization of art has decimated the fountain of “cultural oil” that New Orleans was spewing

New Orleans was founded on geologically young river deposits near the terminus of the North American continent’s largest delta. It is surrounded by water bodies on the three sides, with the highest point located about 25 feet above sea level. The Mississippi River is largely contributes to the most of the New Orleans’ landform. The rich soil which New Orleans is built on is made up of silt which is constantly covered with water every time the river floods or storm comes in from the water. This creates unique wetland landscape of swamps, salt-water marshes and bayous.

I agree that The Beverly Hillbillies in episode two exploits hillbilly, redneck and white trash stereotypes. In the beginning of the scene, the Clampett family arrived to their new home stunned that they have a driveway leading to their residence. This proves that hillbillies are. stereotype to be in a low class Caucasian. In addition, as the attendant showed the family around their new home, the grandma told jethro to "fetch my stove so I can get some vittles to cook".

Texas Stereotypes Texas is well known for a lot of things, to being one of the biggest states in the US to JFK Assassination. Many people believe that Texas is probably one of the violent states because of many people owning guns and many prisoners being on death row. Numerous individuals has came up with a lot of stereotype for Texas and Texans. One of the most famous and favorable stereotypes are that Texas consist of many cowboys and cowgirls. Yes many of men and women are but, little do they know that more than 85% of the Texas population lives in urban areas.

Although the setting is unique she still manages to be authentic to New Orleans. An excellent example of this is the Mercedes Superdome; In Orleans it is explained that during the hurricanes people started piling bodies inside the dome to keep the smell of rot at a minimum and once the bodies reached the roof it got sealed. Several years later, Daniel decides to investigate the Superdome because he’s curious about how it looks. “The Dome loomed above him like a poached egg in a cup. The top was shattered, tapped by a giant spoon […] the dome was as wide as a city block and while the sidewalks had once been broad to accommodate the crowds of concertgoers and sports fans, they were now broken and shadowed, treacherous to cross” (Smith, 2013, P.108)

Americans Stereotypes: Loosening stereotypes Americans are always scared when they see a black man and think about them trying to harm them. Actually, that isn’t always the case and isn’t the case a lot of the time. Brent Staples in his writing Black Men in Public Spaces shows some of the societies stereotype issues. Americans should stop stereotyping blacks, not purposely go around them at night, and he shouldn’t have to whistle to make people comfortable around him. Americans put stereotypes on different ethnicities.

Spike’s decision to interview those from New Orleans and Louisiana offers a much larger quantity of information, and also can introduce the aspects of traditions and civilization of that region that were not completely destroyed by the storm, such as Mardi Gras. All Asians are good at math, all blondes are dumb, all Muslims are terrorists - these are all common stereotypes. Without even realizing it, stereotypes have undeniably played an enormous role in individual lives. Minds seem to already set a certain image in them based on the people they encounter. People judge others by their skin tone, ethnicity, and physical appearance unconsciously, and this have been proven by many social experiments. Of course, though these stereotypes might be accurate at times, there are situations where they are completely defied.

One thing everyone needs to know is all stereotypes are all based on truths. Truths, pertaining to stereotypes, are how categorized groups used to act in a certain way in the past or how some still act that certain way currently. Truths are basically the honest look of how the group behaves. Currently people get misconceptions and stereotypes confused. Yet misconceptions are formed from stereotypes and are incorrect based on truths.
