Stereotypes about Ukraine: positive and negative aspects To start with short introduction, first of all I would like to describe briefly how I understand this word – “stereotypes”. Stereotypes are common beliefs which are supported by majority of people towards something or someone. Actually, stereotypes can exist towards culture, race, behavior, sex… And no matter: is these facts right or wrong, because if majority believes them – they always will be. Why I decided to choose this topic? There is couple of reasons. First reason is that I have always been interested how many stereotypes exist about Ukraine in the world. Ukraine’s current situation and position seems to be ambiguous for me, that is why I want to conduct more deeper research …show more content…
A lot of people from Europe and America think that Ukraine is a part of Russia. And people who are living there are as Russians almost. In order to prove that this stereotype is completely wrong, I would like to bring next historical argument. During ages territory of modern Ukraine had been included in such big states as Kievan Rus from the late 9th to the mid-13th century under the reign of Rurik dynasty; the Principality of Galicia–Volhynia, or Kingdom of Ruthenia after collapse of Kievan Rus from 13th to the 14th century; the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian and The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from 13th to the end of 18th century; the USSR in 20th cenruty. The modern peoples of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia all claim Kievan Rus' as their cultural ancestors. These units included not only the territories of modern Ukraine, but also Belarus, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia also. Thus, a statement that whole Ukraine had been for a long time a part of Russia is completely …show more content…
Main reason is that Ukraine is agricultural country and some time ago the hog growing was very popular in every family living in the country side. Historically lard breed of hogs were grown and the lard was used in different types: rendered, salted or fried. Today eating of lard can’t be considered as a national kind of sport because the tradition of growing the lard breed of hogs is lost, and that young people prefer to live a healthy life style. Not many people do eat the lard – may be elder generation or to honor the tradition you could be offered ground lard with garlic in Ukrainian
Although the Russian empire was the largest empire and took over parts of Asia and Europe, they did not contain much land overseas like Western Europe did. Russia was very isolated from the rest of the world which motivated them to expand their territory. Russian motives were very strong being that they were located on the cold, and heavily forested eastern fringe of Christendom, where it was very unlikely to construct the greatest empire during the Modern Era. One of Russia’s motives for expansion to Siberia includes the opportunity for fur bearing animals. They were in need of fur for warmth being that the Russian empire expanded over the tundra of Northern Asia.

Gerus, “The Great Ukrainian Famine-Genocide,” Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies, University of Manitoba, August 4, 2001 (adapted)) Stalin’s policies had stripped Ukrainians of their hard-working, individualistic values, turning the country into a voiceless machine used to make more grain to be

‘We see and understand things not as they are but as we are’ – Christopher Columbus. Growing up in a multicultural mecca like Canada, you learn a lot about other cultures and races, but you also learn about what others think of your culture, race, personality and religion. Everyone at one point or another has been shocked by someone acting differently to the stereotype perpetuated by others about their culture, race, ethnicity, or religion. Part of growing up in Canada is learning that your perception of someone was wrong. Time and time again, people stood up and proven that stereotypes are not only wrong but a crude and unfair generalization.
One of those contrasting points are the differences in the balances of powers. In the Russian Federation, the Executive Branch, specifically the president, appears more powerful than the other two branches, legislative and judicial. The only power the legislative and judicial branches have to prevent the president from becoming too powerful is the act of impeaching him. This is dissimilar to the United States where there is an accepted system of checks and balances that prevents one branch from becoming more powerful than the other two. An additional point of diversity of the two are the governmental structures.
As we look throughout history, governments have implemented policies and are partially responsible for the denial of human rights to a certain group. These groups include Ukrainians and Rwandans. The denial of human rights in these regions not only affect those in the region but internationally. Both Ukrainians and Rwandans were denied their human rights. Ukraine’s hope and will was in the hands of the dictator Joseph Stalin.
A concrete example of unique Canadian language would be the use of the word ‘eh’. “Eh” is a meaningless expression that can be added to the end of pretty well any sentence. This has become a part of Canadian culture because so many people started saying it, then when others heard it, the word caught on and now every true Canadian has said it at least once in their lifetime. In conclusion, being Canadian is such a blessing that many citizens take for granted.
They committed many crimes that caused great tragedy throughout the country. Sviatoslav Karavansky testified in front of the United States Ukraine Famine Commission stating “My parents wondered how it was possible that such great quantities of food were being exported while the village population was starving” (Document D). He said as he testified that the government was starving them and hurting them even more by taking all their food. The Government took everything from these people and punished them if they didn’t follow the new law. Clarence Manning wrote, ”They even in places took specimens of fecal matter from the toilets in an effort to learn by analysis whether the peasants has stolen government property and were eating grain” (document J).
Children inherit traits from each of their parents—whether their eye color or their height— we all get something. I inherited the determination and wisdom they carry in addition to physical traits. My mother taught me to work hard, and that will change your view of the world. People will look down on you for looking different and being different; they will judge you due to your race and financial status, I remember being young and watching my mother work for hours on end, only taking short breaks throughout the day, and readily continuing her job when she got home. She did this because of stereotypes—particularly, the belief that immigrants are lazy.
He was the ruler of Novgorod, and later made himself the prince of Kievan Russia. His religious preference is important because the expansion of Orthodox Christendom northward provided a impediment against the eastward expansion of Latin Christianity. 29) To improve Kievan Russia's ties with the Byzantine, Vladimir I provided trade to reach thirty to 50 thousand people. Also, the Byzantines looked into the Balkans and Kievan Russia as the primary place for extending their political and religious influence.
When the Ukraine was part of the USSR, it had the most productive farms that produced many vegetables and fruits. Then, this was all taken, from collective farming, and Ukrainians starved, “That summer, the vegetables couldn’t even ripen - people pulled them out of the ground - still green - and ate them.” (Document 3). Ukraine was full of starving and dying people. A mass famine was generating.
Prensky (2001) pioneered the analogy and contrast between the natives and the immigrants. Additionally, he claimed that there is a gap dividing the natives from the immigrants, and it is caused by the rapid spreading of digital technology. Rational and process information is the cause of the gap; Prensky stated that natives’ intelligence and brain structures modify in direct proportion to the emergence of technology and the degree on their usage. While Prensky also included that all the peoples’ brains are similar in matter, immigrants’ brainpowers are processed slower and thus cannot keep up nor understand the natives. However, he didn’t elaborate further on the more diverse reasons for the extending discontinuity between immigrants and natives.
Stereotypes are simple images or beliefs over the attributes assigned to a particular social group, are models of behavior that become schemes deeply rooted in our mentalities to the point that we adopt them as part of human naturalness. Stereotypes can be racial, religious, sexual and social. These could be the caused of a known incident or attitude years earlier, or simply the result of frequent rumors. Stereotypes can affect different spheres of society. These assumptions can filter into many aspects of life.
While some believe not all assumptions and stereotypes are bad, but they force people of the group to fit in a generalized description stripping individuals of their uniqueness. According to the article, “ Positive Stereotypes Are Pervasive and Powerful” by Alexander M. Czopp, Aaron C. Kay, Sapna Cheryan, “even norms that emphasize and encourage superficial attempts to demonstrate inclusiveness, diversity, and multiculturalism at personal and institutional levels...often come with subtle but substantial costs.” There no are such things as positive stereotypes because although affiliating one’s identity with the stereotypic strengths of their social group can have a more immediate response towards group pride and collective self-esteem,
One thing everyone needs to know is all stereotypes are all based on truths. Truths, pertaining to stereotypes, are how categorized groups used to act in a certain way in the past or how some still act that certain way currently. Truths are basically the honest look of how the group behaves. Currently people get misconceptions and stereotypes confused. Yet misconceptions are formed from stereotypes and are incorrect based on truths.
