Serving in this capacity she has exhibited great drive, developing and administering a bevy of initiatives such as the SMARTS faculty/ staff mentoring program, Project Finish Line, and Early Alert Intervention. Her efforts have yielded positive results such as a nearly 90% fall-to-spring mentee persistence rate with the SMARTS program and the reclamation and graduation of several students via Project Finish Line. Cynthia Calhoun’s presence is a fixture at the Student Welcome Center which assists thousands of students as they are attempting to navigate through the uncertainties of a new term.
On a personal note I have found Cynthia to be very cordial and compassionate. She has always had an open door policy, welcoming my company and has been an overflowing well of information. I presently serve as the chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences and am the beneficiary of opportunities provided by her. Additionally she is the paragon of class and professionalism and represents the college well wherever she goes. Finding Tufts was like grocery shopping: I had to pass through aisles of lackluster Wonder Bread before discovering the scrumptious sourdough I needed. I was captivated and surprised by the endearing personality that shone through the articles I read. For an institution, I found Tufts to be quite human. “Pax et Lux” is not just an aphorism above a doorway; the ultimate advice of the dean himself is to “be kind”. It was apparent that in addition to academics, kindness and character is of utmost importance, which assures me that at Tufts I will have the most comprehensive college

Identifying services that predict student academic success and persistence among TRIO student is important for staff and higher education leaders at Johnston Community College. Jones and Watson (1990) noted that retention or persistence issues are critical to institutional planning and funding. Planning and funding have been greatly affected by the student retention rates. The findings from this study will also help to provide pertinent information on how to improve services that foster student success and leadership skills. This study is significant in that it will examine the factors that critically influence academic success and persistence of students enrolled in the TRIO program at Johnston Community College in Smithfield,

Human capital refers to growing the economy through education (Spring, 2014), and this is the basis for the founding of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College (OCTC) located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. OCTC’s (2015) mission statement fosters economic development for the region, and the economy is the driving force for the curricula offered at the College. Also, the College’s prescribed measures of success are enrollment, number of graduates, job placement, and the retention rate (SC Technical College System, 2015). As an instructor of introductory science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, retention is the primary indicator of my success. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2016), the retention rate for OCTC is only 34%.
I have just started at the Center for Inclusion and Campus involvement on the Rollins’ campus. At this time I have 28.5 hours which I have spent facilitating Title IX and Buzz presentations to the incoming student body. Title IX training included: identifying the Title IX coordinator and her role and responsibilities, explaining the Red Zone, Clery act and Title IX, going over the colleges policies and terminology involving sexual harassment and assault, explaining where students can find resources and support, how a student can report an incident, changing societies perception of survivors of sexual assault, and teaching students to become active bystanders to prevent sexual assault. The Buzz Training included: engaging the students in activities
By May 2015’s end, Operation Smile informed me that, though my skill set was desired, I had not been selected as a Program Coordinator. The difficult realization that I would not be able to achieve the career goal for which I had worked so hard left me devastated, wondering what to do next. I have always had a strong desire to help and care for people, and knew I had something to offer, but wasn’t sure where to channel my skills and
Transitioning from high school to college can be difficult for some students. The transition begins from the moment a high school senior accepts a position at a college. Deciding on a college can be a difficult process, but once a college is selected the advantages of the college are often determined. Once college begins some students discover that the school is exactly what they were looking for, whereas some students discover that the college is not for them. At Mount Aloysius College and other colleges in the state the number of students enrolled has been declining significantly.
Last week, we had the pleasure of sitting down and talking with Julie Nickerson, a Junior at Simmons College. Nickerson is currently pursuing a double major in Business Management as well as Public Relations, Marketing & Communications and a minor in health care management at Simmons. Nickerson has built her career over a variety of roles ranging from interning at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts last summer, to currently working for Simmons College as a Student Worker in the Academic Programs Office. We wanted to get to know Nickerson more, so we asked her a couple of questions regarding her college decision and life post-graduation: Where did you grow up?
One of her strengths is that she is currently attending MacMurray College to obtain a degree in Social Work and Psychology, but she is stressed because she is not able to study and get her assignments done because of her home environment. Courtney also mentioned that her best friend just passed away from Osteosarcoma and she is coping with that. She states that the adaption to her being gone is not an easy transition and her home life is only making it more challenging because there is always negative energy towards her in the home. Courtney said that she would rather stay later at work or in the school library. This is because she is afraid of the transactions that she may encounter with Linda could be offensive or belligerent criticism.
