In the nonfiction article, “ Are Our School Lunches Healthy Enough?” by McClatchy-Tribune News Service. This article is about how the first lady wants to change school lunches to be healthier for children although the school nutrition do not like her campaign. Michelle Obama’s program should be banned because the school’s lunch is already healthy enough for example, some people are grossed out by the school lunches, some are disappointed, and some say parent can not be trusted.
Body Paragraph 1 Name: Jesus Velazquez
First, the article states that the government is making everyone have to follow one certain rule to keep children healthy. It turns out that some adults and children do not like this rule and will not want it in their schools. For example, “The children are disgusted about the new school lunches they have to serve.” This shows that the children do not want to have the lunches at school and think it is nasty. This also shows that the government is only thinking about the children being healthy which is fine, but they also they need to think about how the children feel. Therefore, the government has to think about what the children want and what they want to eat.

This shows that people really didn’t like the program. This also shows that everybody thinks that they should get rid of the program. This why I chose con for this
In the article, Daniel Weintraub argues that parents are to blame for kids being obese, not food companies. “Parents, not state government, are in the best position to fight the epidemic of overweight children in our schools.” I agree with this claim because he gives good evidence and facts. The article is well written and includes good supporting details which helps the author prove his point. Even though it may have some weak points and some things aren’t explained, it’s very convincing and credible.
Ariana Cha combats a seriously pressing topic in her writing. While many articles are very quick to bash the school lunch program, while this article can enforce it. Cha is supporting the most common argument with the school lunch program, nutritional content. Cha is stating that the nutrients are offered, but are not being accepted by the students. The audience intended for this reading is, literally, anybody that disagrees with the provided meals.
The author stated that families often relied on school lunch programs as a way for their children to be provided with at least one meal per day. “In most cases these are not parents who are homeless or out of work...most are...minimum-wage workers who can’t afford enough to eat on their salaries.” Anna
In Anna Quindlen’s essay, School’s Out for Summer, she discusses what a huge problem child hunger has become and how it affects thousands of families across the nation. Anna’s essay informed the reader of how the problem still exists, and how people are taking steps to prevent and end child hunger. Anna provides the reader with evidence from food banks and summer programs that hunger is still a major problem in the United States. “During the rest of the year fifteen million students get free or cut-rate lunches at school, and many of them get breakfast too.” Ultimately, this shows that many families across the nation cannot afford to feed their children adequate meals three times a day.
Nicholas Confessore, the author of ”How School Lunch Became the Latest Political Battleground”, displays the challenges of transitioning from the old rules to the new rules as part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign. It is clear to all parties that childhood obesity is rising at a dangerous rate in America and school lunches are believed to be the necessary first change. Unfortunately, the multiple different parties that are involved in making the changes do not see eye-to-eye. The School Nutrition Association is one of the groups pushing back against the new government policies. Since the SNA is comprised mostly of lunch ladies, they believe the current meals are the healthiest meal most students receive in a given day.
in spite of this, it is not effective enough to solve the problem of childhood obesity. On the surface, the restructuring of the NSLP seemed like a great idea. After all, who is against serving healthier food? However, concerns exist regarding if changes can happen in childhood hunger in the U.S. due to these new regulations from the HHFKA. The possible consequences are schools are faced with higher expenses due to these requirements, in response some schools have opted out of the NSL, so they do not need to follow the new rules (Turner & Chaloupka, 2014).
Child Hunger “When the AD council convened focus groups not long ago to help prepare a series of public service announcements on child hunger” In the essay “School’s Out for Summer” Anna Quindlen informs us about child hunger in America because, in America people do not believe this happens in our own country but it does. In this essay, Anna Quindlen, used many examples and scenarios to persuade the reader that, in America, child hunger does exist. Some of the first things Anna talks about in this essay is how during the school year kids will always be about to get a lunch and some even a breakfast because, this is what the school provides for the children. And only 3 million kids are getting a summer lunch program.
In a result of this many people, health officials, and parents are complaining because there has been an increase of child obesity. Children grow up learning healthy eating habits and how to make smart food choices which will continue to follow them as they get older. On the other hand, children growing up with
Are School Lunches Really Healthy For You? Imagine going to school and thinking, oh boy what am I going to have for lunch today? And all of the sudden you see something you don’t like, so you don’t eat it and then your stomach starts to growl.
Lowndes County Schools Director of Nutrition says,“The requirements are meant to give children healthier options”(Campbellsville University Online Programs). For the first time in 15 years the government has put a drastic meal change in place in public schools. Many individuals believe these changes aren 't for the best. Two of every three americans are overweight or obese, therefore the government decided to start controlling school lunches through a fantastic program called the National School Lunch Program. The new standards align school meals with the latest nutrition science and offer a variety of food choices.
“But her school lunch control regulations, which were passed in the name of healthy eating have been an utter failure” (Gonchar). The Healthy and Hunger- Free Kids Act was supposed to gives kids a better school lunch, yet it has failed. The ultimate result was that kids are not eating their lunches and money is being put to waste. “It’s great that schools are trying to make school lunches better, they’re not doing a very good job about it, starving kids at school isn’t exactly a way to get kid’s obesity down” (Arit John). Even though school are trying to make improvements the steps they are taking are actually worsening the situation.
Have you ever wondered if you could ever change the school lunches in the Public schools? Well you’re not the only one, many other people thought about changing the way you eat at lunch and started to change it. Some trials have failed but some have succeeded at the trail for their public school. But some administrators what it to come to all schools, for the fact that they are losing money because kids stopped eating lunches at school.
To begin with, the taste alone of school lunches is beyond unsatisfactory. The meals provided by public schools are not appetizing. There exists a tangible disconnect between the enticing, nutritious meals advertised on the school board’s menus and what the students actually receive—pathetic portions and lukewarm meals slapped onto a tray. Children’s complaints about school lunches are often seen as trite. However, while common, they are not any less accurate.
Lunch being served to the unaware students at schools are deceivingly unhealthy and only a slim 6-7% of schools follow the government-issued nutrition standards (Richardson, 2010). The thought of cheap ingredients and chemicals being added into the food that children eat on a daily basis is sickening. If schools switch their current food options with locally grown organic foods, childhood obesity would be one step closer to being solved and parents could rest easy knowing that the school has their children’s best interest at heart. The community can prove to be an asset to curing childhood obesity, and physical education classes too could change the course of a kid’s
Rachel Peters Mr.James AICE English Language 02 February 2018 A typical school lunch consists of a fruit or vegetable, milk, and a main meal. Whether it be a chicken sandwich, or a slice of pizza, the government has set restrictions on what is served in school cafeterias. Some schools even offer an à la carte lunch line for items such as cookies and ice cream. After Barack Obama was inaugurated in January of 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama made it a goal to have nutritional meals at school.
