Bradbury wrote the book during 1950–1953 in Los Angeles, California when Senator McCarthy was up-and-coming. Bradbury may have took inspiration in wanting to write a book in which its protagonist when against the conventional society. McCarthy, much like Bradbury, both seem to have wanted to oust communist or “regulators.” In Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury showed how leaders could be contradictive and deceptive. Surely since Senator McCarthy was an outspoken and influential (he has a whole era named after him!) figure, Bradbury would have seized the chance to somewhat put whatever McCarthy was criticizing in words.
A little background about McCarthy and his crusade; around the 1940s-50s, communism (otherwise known as radical leftism) became widespread and real. That frightened many Americans, and that was when McCarthy came along to reveal the dissenting actions of communism and communists. Thus came along his infamous 1950 speech in which he exposed the spies and members of the communist party. He verbally attacked many officials, and used issues besides communism to do so. Many people spoke in favor of McCarthy’s statements, as they were so frightening.

Except a lot of McCarthy’s accusations of subversion weren’t always backed up by evidence. McCarthyism was quintessentially a harassment and maltreatment of alleged traitors (which most of the time wasn’t the case). To tie both McCarthy and Bradbury’s works together: book burning and subduing disloyal ideas has made several appearances in history, and more recently in the McCarthy era in which Bradbury wrote a couple of his books
GRABBER SENTENCE. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury depicts a society which shuns knowledge and burns books. This results in the citizens of this dystopia lacking depth of thought in both everyday activities and important decisions. One character, Mildred, abuses the use of sleeping pills to cope with difficult situations. Neither Mildred nor her friends possess strong bonds to other people around them because they only worry about themselves.
Senator Joseph McCarthy was a far right politcian that thought any american, rich, poor, democrat, rebublican, conservative, liberal and hollywood elites that didn’t agree with his views were communists. Joseph McCarthy let everyone know that there was communism in a local newspaper that the state department was infested with communists. McCarthy rhethoric it repeats to a massive audience in the coming months as he grew the power in fame as a Senator, people believed him just as the very same of The Crucibles they all beleved the one girl and accuse half the town for being witches. Joseph McCarthy was a witch hunter because he believed they are a communist if a person was on a payphone he would accuse for being a communist and they you are
McCarthy swore every politician was a communist. Communism is a “system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self- perpetuating political party” (dictionary.com). The influence of McCarthy led to blackballing, which influenced Hollywood’s creative individuals and their business. During this time was when people were judged and had opinions that were far from the truth. Because of Bradbury living in this era, the book was greatly influenced by communism and McCarthyism.
Ray Bradbury’s book Fahrenheit 451 shares a lot of Bradbury's personal feelings, predictions, and criticisms of how society was changing during 1953. His feelings were influenced by Germany's book burnings and the Second Red Scare, which took place during the writing of the book and influenced the dystopian elements of the society in Fahrenheit 451. Bradbury argues that the rise of communism in the future could lead to a society that values conformity over individuality; this view can be seen today from the effects of political polarization and with the shifting parties in our democracy, as both republicans and democrats are traveling farther to the left and the right of the political spectrum. Communism is evident through Bradbury's dystopian
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is a cautionary tale that warns of the impending danger of a brainwashed society that refuses to think for themselves and believes the propaganda put out by the government. He uses his book as a way to bring attention to this situation and to put out a visual of what could be the future. A quote said by Beatty is related to this. He said “Any man's insane who thinks he can fool the government.” (page 33) Bradbury's generation was the 1950’s and during this time era they had started to go into the korean war and the civil rights movement was happening.
Sam Roberts in the article A Decade of Fear argues that McCarthyism turned Americans against each other. Roberts supports his claim by illustrating fear, describing betrayal, and comparing it to other United States internal conflicts. The author’s purpose is to point out a vulnerable period of American history in order to demonstrate that Americans felt prey to McCarthy’s negative propaganda. The author writes in a cynical tone for an educated audience. I strongly agree with Robert’s claim.
Ray Bradbury’s novel ‘Fahrenheit 451’ warns of the dangers of technology and blind obedience through the character of Mildred Montag amongst others. Although Mildred is a minor character throughout the text, her image as the poster girl of the dystopian vision of the future Bradbury had created highlights that in a society where technology is all-powerful and all-consuming, true happiness is seldom found. Bradbury depicts characters who have an awareness of life outside of technology to be genuinely happier and more sincere, whereas those who have conformed to mores of society are consequently dissatisfied with life. Ultimately, it is Montag’s realisation that there is more to life than shallow conversations and parlour walls, and the happiness
In the book, citizens have no idea about what is “truly” happening around them because of their censoring government. The author warns people not to allow the government to take full control. This ties up to the McCarthy censorship. US senator, Joseph McCarthy, made unfair allegations and Bradbury wanted to indict this with his book. He condemned about the investigations on communists in Hollywood by the House Un-American Activities Committee(Weller, 2013).
With all of the accusations going around, people were forgetting that everyone can have their own opinion. Edward R Murrow, a television host of See It Now bashed McCarthy by saying “’We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty’” (Roberts, 2). Murrow was saying that just because a person disagrees with what the president or a government official says, does not mean they are a communist. The United States has freedom of speech, and citizens can say whatever they want about the government.
Senator Joseph McCarthy was a merciless politician who would be censured by the Senate in 1954 for his false accusations. However, his political journey throughout the country had a significant impact on the American public. Americans let fear override their conscious and allowed a bully to insert panic into their minds. McCarthy’s crusade was powerful and convinced the naive public during a time of war to question their own government without sufficient
McCarthy manipulated the media, told outrageous stories about the communist conspiracy in the United States, and used his power and America’s fear to besmirch any opponents as “communist sympathizers” to make sure he remained at the top. Actually, most conservative members of Congress supported McCarthy because it helped them gain votes during elections. The majority of McCarthy 's movement attacked liberals and members of the Democratic Party and this aided anyone who was not part of those topics and organizations. Then McCarthy began to target the Army because they wouldn’t favor David Schine, one of his former investigators, who had been drafted in. “Senator Joseph McCarthy began hearings investigating the United States Army, which he charged with being ‘soft’ on communism.
McCarthy created the uproar of having a ‘witch hunt’ on communists in America. His influence on the people gave him credibility when he accused those innocent people. “He cited 81 cases that day. He skipped several numbers, and for some cases repeated the same flimsy information. He proved nothing, but the Senate called for a full investigation.”(ushistory.org).
McCarthyism was a vociferous campaign against alleged communists in the US government. Many of the accused were blacklisted or lost their jobs, although most did not in fact belong to the Communist Party. In these two events, many similarities
Arthur Miller used his storytelling to discretely show the US leadership that decisions made in fear were dangerous. Miller in his story had a quote about how “Until an hour before the Devil fell, God thought him beautiful in Heaven.” stating the the Americans may like how the situation is being dealt with but it will eventually cause terrible trouble. McCarthy was making decisions made in fear and it was hurting the US and in fact made it so that if Miller wrote his opinion without hiding it behind a story he too would have been punished and arrested. It can be assured that Miller would have just written his opinion in its raw form if McCarthyism wasn’t a factor.
He said that at least 205 members of the State Department were members of the communist party. This was after it was released to the public that a couple named Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were secretly communist spies who were staying in the U.S., stealing nuclear weapon secrets. With McCarthy’s remarks such as “They [a communist spy] could even be your neighbor!’ scarring the American public’s mind, many were on edge.
