Emily Knust English 11 Quarter Three Book Report Fallen Angels is a novel written by Walter Dean Myers. Myers, like Richie Perry, was a colored boy from Harlem. Myers had a speech problem all throughout his life and this gave him the drive to write. He dropped out of school as a junior and later went to the army. He was not recognized until he won a reward for his story, Where Does A Day Go? This novel, Fallen Angels, won the Coretta Scott King Award. This story is set in Vietnam, in about 1967. The Vietnam War was fought against North Vietnam. They were supported by other communist nations, and the U.S wanted to stop the spread of communism. The main protagonist is Richie Perry, a teen, from Harlem, that was much like the author. Perry went to the army to try to get away from his alcoholic mother. Perry was very smart, and could have had the opportunity to go to college …show more content…
In some ways this helps him explain this situation to himself. The central theme would be the loss of innocence to the young boys. The understand the harsh reality of war and that it isn’t glamorous at all. The mix up of his medical files contribute and show the disorder and confusion that is to come. Perrys constant struggle with the whole reason to war contributes to the harsh reality of the war theme. Perry’s letter home is a symbol of him coming to terms with the concept of war. When he first gets there he has no idea even how to put this place into war but as he sees more and more of the reality of war he is finally able to write a letter to his brother about his situation. Another symbol is the lost dog-tags. When they have to leave and dispose of the dead, they don’t even have time or the decency to collect the tags to identify the fallen men. This symbolises the senselessness of war and how not all men die honorable
Fallen Angels “I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity” (Dwight D. Eisenhower). Throughout all of history war has surrounded human existence. From the Spartans in Rome to Infantry Marines patrolling the streets in Afghanistan, the presence of war has affected generations since the beginning of time. In the book, Fallen Angels, the author, Walter Dean Myers portrays how the harsh realities of war have a substantial impact on soldiers and their experiences by displaying the internal transformations, the power of fear, the permanent psychological damages, and the cruelty of the environment through a classic Vietnam War story. One of the most prevalent impacts war
The Vietnam war is known as the longest war in the U.S. history. It was situated in Vietnam, a country located in the southeast of China, during the cold war. Vietnam was a French colony and like in most colonies, the natives (Vietnamese people) were not treated right; Ho Chi Minh, that later became north Vietnam leader, asked for help to western countries, which was denied. The Soviet Union offered to help Vietnam, however, in order to do so they had to become communists, the country was divided into North Vietnam (communist) and south Vietnam (democratic), eventually North Vietnam wanted to take over South Vietnam. The U.S. got involved in Vietnam to keep communism from spreading, thus the country was divided because not all Americans agreed with the participation in this war, and the division between Americans made the U.S. foreign policies to change.
Perry for example was already uncertain of his future and his knee injury already had him on edge. towards the end of the book after burning the corpses of his past comrades he lost all faith, and innocence. So the theme of the book is that war is devastating to person both mentally and
This connects to the theme by showing age can have an impact on somebody. As I kept reading, in the middle of the book RIchard Perry and his other soldier and friends who were older, began to get injured and killed in action from the war. Another quote from the book shows that Richard was happy that he hasn’t severly injured anyone or killed anyone else, “I’m not a killer,” I said. He looked at me and smiled. I hated him saying that.
The 1989 Coretta Scott King Author Award was presented to Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. Fallen Angels tells the story of Perry, an African American soldier during the Vietnam War. Although Perry faces the traditional trials that all soldiers face, he have additional obstacles because he is black. This is a ware perspective that is rarely shared, but Walter Dean Myers does an excellent job in bringing it to light. Fallen Angels is an award-winning text because it is the story of an African American during one of the worst wars in American history.
The story of one kid’s upside down life in the neighborhood of Harlem is told by Walter Dean Myers who creates a very interesting situation in a book called Scorpions. Jamal Hicks, a boy like no other, faces the choice of a life of peace or violence, especially when payback is so tempting. In addition, Jamal tries to avoid meeting the horrible fate of his older brother, currently in jail for stabbing someone. At home, Jamal is saddened by his mother crying because of Randy’s departure and her efforts for his reappeal. In school, Jamal is accused of not doing his homework and being late several times.
The images that left a presence in my mind was this constant theme of death. Death has unfortunately traumatized my childhood through various reasons, therefore causing myself to be quite pretentious. The moment that I had realized that death had created this large facade through the novel’s writing, it instantaneously reminded myself of those darker portions of my lifetime. Though this experience was upsetting for myself, it also created this oddity that I’ve pondered of throughout the novel. These soldiers deemed to amaze me.
Suspense is a feeling of excitement or being anxious. The suspense of this story is that it is at Night, and that It is Occurring at time of civil war. He Created Suspense when he smoked a cigarette. He also kills the old lady and the Free state sniper. Then He gets Curious, and Goes Back, Then Realizes that he shot and killed his brother.
He understands that his men are not used to being overseas and being at war. Instead of getting mad at them or making fun of them, he helps them adapt to military life. He also tried to get to know his soldiers and relate to them. Of all the men in his platoon, Carroll related to Perry the most. (Myers 38).
The soldier’s absorption symbolizes people’s desire for a better future, the characteristically human refusal to give up hope. Furthermore, the images’ blue tinge warns against the grim future that awaits any who wish to wage war. The man is the only
The theme I chose for The Wednesday Wars is the growth of Holling. They call it The Wednesday Wars because every Wednesday Holling had to stay with his teacher that he thought did not like him and she made him work and over the year he grew in friendship with her. The reason I chose the growth of Holling as the theme is because throughout the year, Mrs. Baker helped him grow in stature and knowledge. I chose this because at the start of the book Holling was bad at running and then Mrs. Baker helped him and he grew in running. Lastly, I chose the growth of Holling is because Holling grew in friendship with Meryl Lee.
Walter Dean Myers titled this book “Fallen Angels.” What is a “fallen angel?” In the biblical standpoint it is an angel that revolted against God. This book was mainly about people fighting in the Vietnam War. Some survived and some didn’t.
It is quite difficult to compare two wars that happened 180 years apart from each other, the Vietnam war 1955 to 1975, and the American Revolutionary war 1775 to 1783. Yes, both wars are all that different from each other, in fact I would say that they were the two least similar wars in American history. These wars are very similar because they both used guerilla warfare, a form of irregular warfare that uses tactics such as ambushes, sabotage, raids, and mobility to fight a larger less mobile military force. However a major difference in the wars was that the Revolutionary war was fought to gain independence, while the Vietnam war was fought to maintain independence. Another difference is that the U.S. were ‘Victors’ in the Revolutionary war, and were not so in the Vietnam war.
1. What were your thoughts after viewing scenes at Omaha Beach? Be able to give an overview of D-Day with factual information. Even after watching the movie a couple times, the Omaha Beach scene is still one of the most impactful and remarkable scenes from the movie to date. With a mix of tension and prolonged anticipation, the scene carries out into mass chaos with confusion and disorganization among the troops.
Present throughout the book is the theme of disillusionment. In the school, they’ve been told by their schoolmasters and parents that unless they join the war, they would remain cowards. They see propaganda after propaganda, all alluding towards the glory of battle and warfare. Out on the front, they realize that nothing was further from the truth. Their dreams of being heroes shattered, like when they compare themselves to the soldier on a poster in chapter 7.
