Joseph Griffith has created quite a strange painting if you only focus on the surface. When you only look at the surface of The Surrender painting you may think to yourself, “How in the world does any of this go together?” It may be a little confusing at first to try to link Robocop, Waldo and George Washington riding a giant triceratops together when you just focus on the surface material. However, this painting has a deeper meaning. Joseph Griffith is trying to make a statement through his painting The Surrender by linking all of these random components together with a hidden meaning. Griffith is trying to portray the warped way Americans think in a comical sense. He portrays all of the heroes as characters from all kinds of movies and television shows. This picture represents the idolization that Americans have created toward the invention of the television. Americans have grown to revolve around technology and entertainment so much that it has worked its way into everyday life. The average American cannot spend a day without using one piece of …show more content…
They only broadcasted the many terrorist attacks and plastered ISIS all over the news channels in the country. That has given us a warped opinion of them. In the painting, Griffith depicts the surrendering side as the “bad people” from the Middle East. They have been labeled as the “bad people” because of television, which is representing the side that is still fighting. Is the “good” side (television) really good? How is this messed up system doing any good for our country? Do we really think that all people from the Middle Eastern region are “bad?” In conclusion, The Surrender by Robert Griffith is a comical depiction of how U.S. television has changed the way that we view others. He is trying to state that Americans’ way of thinking is, “if you 're not with us, you 're against
Quindlen believes that Americans are unconsciously presenting a nationalistic act as they are purchasing consumer goods in which they
When I look at the George Washington picture I notice how the artist uses lighter colors to make Washington stand out among his achievements, such as the crumpled up British flag in the left hand corner. When I see this article of art I think that Washington must have been a wonderful officer and won many battles. However, when I add what I have learned about Washington it changes how I see the picture because Washington was not always a great general, he made mistakes but he learned from them. He learned a lot from his first battle at Fort Necessity in the French and Indian War, which helped him adopt the strategic defensive he used in the revolutionary war to help his men stay alive and keep fighting to show that American would not back down.
It provides an image for the reader that conveys what television serves for society. Conclusively, Douglas Rushkoff’s “ Who’s the rat?” presents the argument that television viewers are entertained by other people’s pain, suffering and humiliation and everyone is at blame for this being true. He utilizes this by using logos, diction and other rhetorical devices which help to strengthen his
To start, The Cay is a historical fiction novel written by Theodore Taylor in in1969. It describes the hardships and lessons of a young boy named Phillip Enright, who is stranded on an island with a man named Timothy for about 3 months. Over the course of the story, Phillip is faced with many hardships, one of them becoming blind as he is on a raft with Timothy and a cat named Stew. He also has to deal with Timothy’s death, which later leads to a happy ending as Phillip is rescued after 3 months, and having three operations to get rid of his blindness. Overall, there are so many conflicts in The Cay, but there are three that are central to the novel.
A second example, the televisors, is used for destructive purposes and to enforce propaganda. The device is said to be “real”, “immediate”, and having “dimension”. (Bradbury 80). The televisor is designed to be captivating; it broadcasts mind-numbing entertainment and propaganda that many people unknowingly submit themselves to. The government uses the device to control what information citizens receive and what they believe, effectively limiting their access to knowledge and critical thinking.
The painting, George Washington Crossing the Delaware, illustrates this concept by assigning all of the men in Washington’s boat different styles of clothing and different skin tones in order to show that they are all from unique backgrounds (Leutze). This also qualifies as an emotional appeal, it attempts to bring pride to minority groups by showing that men from all origins had to work together to accomplish the task of defeating the British. The fact that the American Revolution relied on such a wide scope of individuals, even though racial discrimination was prevalent at the time shows that today it is just as vital for members of all races and ethnicities to come to terms with their differences and cooperate in order to ensure that America continues to survive as a nation. Lincoln’s address discusses how both the north and south “pray to… God” and “[invoke] his aid” (4). The use of anaphora can be seen as logos because Lincoln gave multiple examples of how the citizens of the Union were not as different from the people living in the south as they may have initially imagined.
With every other show involving blood and gore, The Andy Griffith Show presents viewers with a way to travel away from the chaos of life and back to carefree, black-and-white
He uses these key words and phrases to show an understanding of the American people and how fighting for their opinion is justified and the epitome of the
As with an addiction the more you are told to stop, the more you are drawn in. Because of viewership, Americans have essentially become “chained to their image-displacement machines like lab animals to dispensers of morphine” (Nelson 308). All over America, there is a demand for power
The image shows Manifest Destiny through use of saturation of colours, light and dark, detail, and symbolism. The painting was called American progress to show how the Americans had a god forsaken right to the land. This painting is displaying how the people are pushing with this idea of holiness, but are in the process moving the darkness, or the native people and creatures, out of their homes. The light seems to be spreading forward, and the darkness receding farther and farther away to demonstrate the “cleansing” of the land.
You may also notice General Lafayette pointing as if he is asking or saying something. Surprisingly upon further investigation, I learned General Lafayette was younger then both Washington and Tilghman at the time of the war. The pointing was placed in the painting to symbolize his young age and lack of wisdom. If you focus on just the three figures according to color, you’ll notice General Washington is painted seemingly the brightest, hinting once again towards his important role played throughout the
They were trained to take everything shown on television as entertainment only. “Entertainment is the supra-ideology of all discourse on television. No matter what is depicted or from what point of view, the overarching presumption is that it is there for our amusement and pleasure.” (Postman 87). In modern American society, this can no longer be applied to all Americans, as it is seen that individuals are taking more action against things that happen in society.
The general argument made by David Herbert Donald in Why the War Came: The Sectional Struggle over Slavery in the Territories is that the issue of slavery in the national territories started the Civil War. More specifically, Donald argues that the Kansas-Nebraska Act, crafted by Stephen A. Douglas, revived the issue of slavery in the territories and divided the nation into hostile sections which turned the great forces that once cement American unity into a tool that further divided the nation. Donald points out that North detested slavery to the conception of slavery as being un-American and was the main reason why the South was lagging behind. In order to abolish slavery, the North, who held the majority in the national government, acted on the regulation of national territories. The national territories were one of the few areas that the North could act against slavery since they did not have power over slavery within the states it existed.
( Malcom X 22). Malcom X uses imagery here so that people remember how unfairly they were treated and how unfairly they still are being treated. He wants them to get angry and get upset at the injustice they've tolerated for so
Viewing Emanuel Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware painting evoked a great deal of emotion. Upon walking into the room filled with American landscape paintings, the enormous size demanded all my attention temporarily making me forget about the rest of the paintings. The longer I gazed at the artist’s magnificent triumph, the more I felt a part of this historic venture. The painting is oil-on-canvas, and it’s not the only painting Leutze made. The first version of this painting was damaged by a fire, and the second painting, which is a full-sized replica of the first, was begun shortly after the first version was damaged.
