In Last Man Out by Mike Lupica, Tommy, a teenager, learns that he needs his father. In the beginning, Tommy is playing football with his team against the Jaguars. After Tommy scores a touchdown he hears a siren. Tommy’s dad, Patrick Gallagher, is a firefighter so Tommy knows that his dad is most likely about to breach his way into an incinerating building. Patrick Gallagher is great at his job, he was fated to be a firefighter. After a little while, Tommy sees his mom talking to his coach on the sideline. He then finds out that his dad was severely injured while salvaging a little girl from a burning building. During practice he hit his teammates way too hard and causing a bunch of chaos. Then during his next game, he causes two penalties which causes his team to lose the game. Whenever Tommy made a mistake he would talk to his dad, but his dad is gone now. Mike, one of Tommy’s teammates, sees that Tommy is going through a rough time and shows Tommy how to skateboard, this helps Tommy get his mind off of his dad. Later, Tommy convinces Emily to play soccer with him and they talk for a little bit, this helps Emily and Tommy realize that they can be happy and have a good time even though their dad is gone. Tommy finally got back to being the football player that he was before and his team starts to win. Tommy’s team, the Brighton Bears end up making it to the championship game. During the first quarter of the game, Tommy injures himself making a touchdown saving tackle. This means that his season is over and he has to watch the game from the sideline. The Brighton Bears end up winning the game, Tommy and his teammates are very excited. The only thing that could’ve made Tommy happier is if his dad was there to celebrate with
