Night is a memoir narrated by Eliezer, a young Jewish teenager. Eliezer recounts his life in Sighet, a small Transylvanian town, in 1941, four years prior to the end of World War II. As the protagonist of Night, Eliezer shares insights into his strong beliefs in his faith and his family. He desires to have a tutor who can guide him in his spiritual growth and deepen his devotion to God. Moishe the Beadle is the first person Eliezer mentions in his book.

There were many “selections'”, where they would take the weak to kill them, held during the time they were there. In the camp the jews would be beaten and humiliated and they would do this for fun and just for a laugh. Eliezer went through many odd things like a man making him pry out his gold tooth with a rusty spoon. They were forced to watch other prisoners being hung in the courtyard. They had to watch a young boy get hung because he was associated with some rebels in the buna.

Ellie Wiesel, the author of Night, writes a highly graphic and realistic account of living in the middle of the Holocaust. Wiesel goes into much detail during many instances about holocaust life, luring the reader into his hell. During his life within the Holocaust, Wiesel witnesses a child being hung, the sacrificing of a truckload of children in a fiery ditch, people being shot, his own father being beaten by other prisoners, a son beating his father for bread, prisoners eating their own waste to survive, and many other inconceivable acts. In Night, the prisoners are stripped of almost everything that makes them human. At the end of the novel, Ellie looked at himself in the mirror after many years of being a prisoner; “I saw a corpse”,

The story begins with the introduction of Twelve year old boy Eliezer, living in the town of Sighet. He is an orthodox Jewish family’s son and have two older sisters, Hilda and Bea and a younger sister Tzipora. They have been raised under strict Jewish tradition. Eliezer’s father is a shop keeper and highly respected by the Jewish community of Sighet. Eliezer is very interested in religious activities, he studies Talmud; Jewish oral law and he has a passion to learn Kabbalah.

After reading more of Elie Wiesel’s haunting life story, he describes the horrendous things he witnessed while in the concentration camp and, how the prisoners were treated in the most gruesome ways. When they first get to Auschwitz, the Jews are given a number then doctors use needles to brand it onto each captive’s forearm. From then on the prisoners were not known by name but, by their number. This was just one of the degrading things that the Jews were forced to endure. Another hardship they faced was the verbal and physical abuse not only from the guards but, from the other prisoners as well.

For example, they are given little to no food and water. They were in these cars for days, so some people died from dehydration and starvation. Another reason they struggled in these cars was because there was no place to go to the bathroom. Since there were no toilets, the Jews had to use the restroom in the corner. The feces and urine made the car stink.

The only true way for everyone to have human rights is to live in a utopia. Wiesel, Elie’s “Night.” helped support this claim, as shown in the essay. During the research for this essay it showed a lot of important points. Every situation can turn bad quick and along with that not everyone is treated the same. In Wiesel, Elie.

After watching the documentary I think you really get a sense of how horrific the Holocaust was. I mean we always learn about it in school, but it is usually through textbooks and primary source documents. We learn about the atrocities; however the American educational system touches upon it lightly. Ultimately, Americans only get a small idea of what the Holocaust was especially to the Jewish people. We learn so much about the Holocaust, but not about who lived by it.

Night Summary In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, pages twenty-three through twenty-four explain that he was kept in a train with horrific conditions. Wiesel and many other Jews were stuffed in a train that was meant for cattle. They had very little food, air, and water in this train.

Before The Holocaust, Jews lived just like everyone else, no one really paid attention to who was Jewish and who wasn’t. Jews had all the rights that everyone else did. They could own land, go to school, have a job, own factories, and live without fear of being caught until, one man jumped in. What happened in 1939 to 1945 was horrible, it was some of the worst years on earth. World War II took many lives and involved much more. Around hundred million people were involved but around fifty million to eighty-five million died. They were the Axis Powers; Germany, Italy, and Japan against the Allies "Big four", the United Kingdom, United States, Soviet Union, and China. It began with Hitler and his crew, the "Nazi Party" invaded Poland and France declared war.
