Dan West was an exceptional man and a great leader. In Passing on the Gift: The Story of Dan West by Glee Yoder, Yoder quotes The Goshen News after Dan West died, “The Church lost a plain and simple man, who saw in every person a divine image; his goal in leadership was to enable others to let this image come alive” (165). Dan West loved the Church of the Brethren. Dedicated to spreading peace, he created the Heifer Project, an organization giving animals such as heifers, goats, chickens, and ducks away to needy families overseas. Creating Heifer Project and being dedicated to the Church of the Brethren, Dan West showed a variety of leadership skills that Kouzes and Poster developed, such as inspire a shared vision, challenge the purpose, …show more content…
Dan had a dream. Around the world, children were dying from hunger. Sending animals, mainly heifers at this time, over to countries that had starving children was his solution. He talked about his plan to some of his neighbors and local farmers. Some of them saw that even though his dream seemed impossible, it could work; therefore, they formed a committee called “Heifers for Relief.” In this committee, Dan’s job was “inspiring, probing, asking why not, and … serving as a stimulator” while other people worked on organizational procedures (Yoder 102). Able to make his dream become possible, Dan West inspired other people with his dream; he inspired a shared vision. Inspiring a shared vision is one principle of leadership according to Kouzes and Posner. It includes believing in a way to make a difference and inspiring others to join in the cause. Believing that he could make a difference, Dan West fed hungry children around the world. This could not have been done without the help of his friends, neighbors, and farmers. They, too, believed in Dan’s dream and helped it become a reality. Inspiring a shared vision is an important aspect to Dan West’s leadership; however, he also challenged the …show more content…
He wanted to develop himself and learn. From a young age, Dan loved to read. When he needed to do chores around the house, it was challenging for his mother and sisters to motivate him to do them when he was reading. He read to broaden his horizons and quench his thirst for knowledge (Yoder 22). Even as he grew older, Dan wanted to grow in knowledge and promote activities such as “the peace movement, the development of human potentialities, volunteer programs, and a self-help project” (Yoder 15). He strived for the truth and read and traveled extensively. To learn even more, he questioned people he knew who had varying interests (Yoder 15). Dan West challenged the purpose. According to Kouzes and Posner, challenging the purpose consists of developing and challenging one’s self in order to grow as well as figuring out something new that can be learned. By looking for ways to grow intellectually, Dan West challenged the purpose. He picked other peoples’ brains in order to learn from them and develop himself. Dan West not only challenged the purpose, but he enabled others to
Pastor Keith Tonkel, the evangelist, the author, the orator and the spiritual leader left this world to be with his lord at the age of 81. Wells United Methodist Church in Jackson confirmed that their pastor had breathed his last at 10.50 am on Wednesday. He was undergoing treatment for cancer. Pastor Tonkel’s long term service to the church was literally an inspiration to many. Dealing with the death of their Pastor seems a very hard exercise for the church and its associated agencies.
Charles W. Chestnutt’s the Passing of Grandison is a tale that sheds light on southern slavery in a time where a movement to free slaves was a rebellious act. The author uses specific locations and dialogue to portray the reality of the era. The theme of the story is addressed through the acts of both of the main characters. On one end, Dick’s determination and courage is driven by a hidden motive that benefits himself; while Grandison’s courage and determination are led by his hidden motive to concur opportunity for himself and his family. Ironically, both men address the topic of what a man is willing to do for the person or people he loves, but the initial reasoning behind the both of the similar yet differing situations leads to a very unexpected outcome.
Many people have different opinions on life - some consider it a great gift meanwhile others consider it a suffering. George agreed with the latter option in the beginning of “The Greatest Gift” and It’s a Wonderful Life but learned throughout it that he was wrong and his life is worth living. Philip Van Doren Stern, the writer of the self-published short story: “The Greatest Gift”, went through a lot to get his piece published. He wrote a 4,100-word story - within the span of four years - and was then unable to find a publisher. Philip subsequently decided to send 200-twenty-one page booklets to his friends as a Christmas card, catching the attention of RKO Pictures producer David Hempstead.
A simple book written with the best intentions; Ray brings to the world Fahrenheit 451 in 1953 (Kipen). Having World War II influencing Ray’s ideas for the book. Fahrenheit 451 brings ideas and points that Ray Bradbury felt the need to write and open the public’s eyes to, as to how technology is changing people’s lives and they are leaving behind books and their critical thinking. Ray Bradbury brings a book about censorship and how banning or in this case burning books does not keep people from the curiosity of the message books have. A big irony arises and his book becomes banned and censored, exactly the same way as in his book.
What is my leadership philosophy? Over twenty years ago, I raised my right hand and took an oath of office by which I swore to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.” I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

The movie, The Lion King, includes several different demonstrations of leadership theories. By following the story of a young lion, whose father is the king, and their “pride” or community, the film shows an array of different leadership approaches from two main leaders (Allers and Minkoff). The most prominent leaders in The Lion King are Mufasa, the king of the “pride lands” and the main character’s father, and Scar. Scar is Mufasa’s bitter and jealous brother that rules over the hyenas just outside of the “pride lands” (Allers and Minkoff). Between these two, very different leaders, the situational approach, the path-goal approach, and the transformational approach are all applied.
“A Father’s Story”, a short story written by Andre Dubus, is an extremely interesting an insightful look into Catholic literature of the modern day. Dubus uses the medium of Catholicism to deliver a story that is both captivating in its action, while also being reaffirming in its attempt to contemplate both belief and faith in God in a man who leads an existence that is seemingly black-and-white and adrift. Through the presence of God and the main character’s struggle with his Catholic religion however, the life that appears to be, isn’t in fact all that is, and as long as he still retains and balances his faith with his love and fatherly duties, new meaning is given to being a Catholic in the modern day. The main character of the story, Luke

In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.
Leadership Thought Prior to 1900 The earliest study of leadership thought would be the “Great Man Theory. This theory conceptualized leaders as a single “Great Man” who knew everything and influenced others to follow him. In leadership discourse, the Great Man theory—an assertion that certain individuals, certain men, are gifts from God placed on earth to provide the lightening needed to uplift human existence—is associated mainly with Thomas Carlyle (Spector, 2015, p.250). The focal-point of this theory is that leaders’ skills are inherent and set that them apart from those around them and that these traits enable them to assume roles of power and authority.

One of the strands in Animal Farm that is of the utmost importance to the story line is leadership. I doubt they would have accomplished as much as they did if not for Snowball, and his excellent leadership. It seems to me that Watership Down also is shaped by leadership, so I will include that in this paper. Another important thread is militarization.
