Cyntoia Brown Juvenile Justice Case
Cyntoia Brown was just a sixteen year old girl when her life suddenly came spiraling out of control. “According to years of local media reports, a 2011 documentary about her case and court documents detailing Brown’s own testimony and that of a juvenile psychiatrist, Brown suffered from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, grew up in an abusive home and had ran away from her adoptive parents’ house prior to becoming involved in prostitution in Nashville” (Willingham, 2017). According to Brown, the “victim,” Johnny Allan, picked up her up at the local Sonic and drove her back to his house after hiring her as a prostitute. She claims there was gun cabinet in the bedroom

After the preliminary hearing, it was decided that Cyntoia Brown, based off of all of the evidence, would be tried as an adult. Cyntoia went to a trial that lasted five days in fear of the word “guilty” (V, 2017). “During her trial, the prosecution argued that the motive for the killing was not self-defense, as Brown claimed, but rather robbery, since Brown took Allan’s wallet and shot him. She was tried as an adult [and after the jury deliberated for six hours,] …show more content…
The convictions carried concurrent life sentences and eight additional years” (Willingham, 2017). Cyntoia Brown, now having been in prison for thirteen years, is continuing to better herself despite the circumstances surrounding her. Brown’s advocates told the Times that she has been a model inmate, earning a G.E.D. and an associate degree over her thirteen years behind bars. Brown, now 28, is also reportedly aiming for a bachelor of arts by next year (Barron, 2017). Although she is attempting to make something of herself, there are many ways this sentencing will impact her life forever. Brown is not eligible for parole until she is 69 (Raphelson, 2017). She will not have the opportunity for a public education, finding a husband or creating a family. She will never be able to prove if she could have overcome the lifestyle that she grew up in. I do not think that the level of justice in this situation was fair. Brown suffered many traumas through her adolescent years from fetal alcohol syndrome to predatory sex-trafficking. She was

Draft Paper In the documentary film, “Kids for Cash”, Robert May shows his audience the horrors of the Luzerne County justice system. He uses imagery, appeals to logos and pathos, personal experiences and anecdotes to support his claim. Robert May made this documentary to show the world that the government needs to make sure that even minors have a fair trial and justice before being incarcerated.

Nicole Williams Ms. DeLong Juvenile Justice System Essay February 1st, 2018 Cyntoia Brown: Juvenile in Prison Cyntoia Brown was born in 1988 to her biological mother Georgina Mitchell. Her mother had given her up for adoption by the time she was two years old to a woman named Ellenette Brown.
In recent readings about Cyntoia Brown, who according to Willingham, previously was a victim of human sex trafficking, is now serving a life sentence for murder. The source reports that Brown suffered from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, grew up in an abusive home and ran away from her adoptive parent’s house prior to becoming involved in prostitution in Nashville. She was staying with different people and using drugs and alcohol. As a runaway, she then met a 24-year-old pimp named "Cut Throat," who eventually began physically and sexually abusing her, and forced her into prostitution according to Willingham. The article states that on August 7, 2004, Brown testified she was solicited for sex by 43-year-old Johnny Mitchell Allan, who picked her up near a Sonic parking lot and drove her back to his house.
To each of you responsible for this child’s sentence I hope to God you don’t have children because this could be your daughter being punished for punishing already!”A petition was started to urge Governor Bill Haslam to grant Brown clemency. As of Sunday afternoon, more than 379,000 people have signed it. Attorney Charles Bone, who began working for Brown pro bono after watching Birman’s film, told NBC that the young woman is “shocked and surprised” that celebrities are rallying behind her, and is “appreciative” of their support. “This is meaningful not to Cyntoia, but to the cause of sex trafficking and sex slavery and juvenile justice,” Bone said. He said that he and a team of lawyers are still fighting for another trial, in which Bone believes Brown would be “charged with second-degree murder at the most.

Introduction For the Task Force Project my group and I decided to focus on Charlie. Charlie was convicted of murdering his mother's boyfriend George. George turned into an abusive alcoholic after he lost his wife and daughter to a car accident. Charlie can remember three times in a year and a half time span where George physically beat his mother.
The YouTube video Cyntoia’s Story was very sad. It was horrible that a young 16-year-old girl had to experience so many bad things. It was unacceptable what Cyntoia did, and the same time, it was unacceptable what Allan did. Unfortunately, Cyntoia and Allan paid a horrible price for the crimes that they both committed. I feel that Cyntoia should have not gotten life in prison and tried as an adult because she was only 16-years-old.
The Supreme Court of the United States of America in 2012 ruled that juveniles couldn’t be tried as juveniles and be sentenced to life without the possibility of bail, no matter how harsh the nature of the crime committed. Justice Elena Kagan argues that juveniles who commit crimes typically have a rough upbringing or unfortunate circumstances which cannot be controlled by the juvenile. She argues that if they are serving a life in prison without a chance of parole, it causes damage to them psychologically due to the lack of experiences. They will miss the most important moments in life that define who they are as an individual.
She committed this crime to prevent any harm that was going to be done to her. It was then stated by AJ Willingham, CNN that she would be life sentenced with parole but she would get that chance at the age of 69 years old ( Willingham, 2017). But when it comes to a white teen male athlete, Eli Meixler states that Brock Turner (the athlete) “served three months in jail for sexual assault, is looking for a retrial ( Meixler, 2017).” Where is the retrial for Ms.Brown? She get parole at the age of 69 but Mr. Turner who was found guilty of three felony cases was only sentenced six months ( Meixler,

As a very young girl, her mother’s ex-boyfriend molested and raped her. Her rape took up a big part of her life, as it never really completely left her. Early on in her life, she branded herself as a bad person, but as she grew and matured, she realized she no longer identified as a bad person, but rather a strong, independent, intelligent woman who takes pride in her black
The juvenile justice system has made numerous of ethical issues when managing juvenile offenders. The issue with the juvenile justice system is the laws and rules that govern it. It has led to years of controversial debate over the ethical dilemmas of the juvenile corrections system, and how they work with youth offenders. The number of minors entering the juvenile justice system is increasing every month. The reasons why the juvenile justice system faces ethical dilemmas is important and needs to be addressed: (1) a vast proportion of juveniles are being tried and prosecuted as adults; (2) the psychological maturation of the juvenile to fully comprehend the justice system; and (3) the factors that contribute to minorities being adjudicated in the juvenile justice system are more likely than White offenders.
