Assuredly crime can have negative effects on anyone involved, however when the offender is familial, it can have an increased amount of detrimental effects on mental health. In the novel The Farm, Tilde is raped by her father repeatedly as a child. After she finally ran away, she leads a nearly perfect life, until her and Chris retire and move to a new country. In their new home, Tilde finds an abandoned building that Chris frequents, with many used condoms on the front lawn. It is 6.2 times more likely for a victim of rape to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder than someone who has never been raped. This is when she begins to foreshadow the fact that she was raped as child. When Tilde’s father raped her, he changed her forever and in the end, took away her mental awareness. Next, in the novel These Things Hidden, Allison’s son Joshua is a little boy who is born into a mess of a life. Before the events in the novel take place, Joshua is an anxiety stricken boy. When he is the victim of a small robbery in his mother’s bookstore, he becomes so anxious that he will not let her out of his sight, “A little boy shouldn’t have to think about locking doors, a child shouldn’t have to worry about keeping [everyone] safe,” (Gudenkauf 122). It is common in youth to experience heightened symptoms when they deal with a crime because they are much more innocent than adults. Unfortunately for Joshua, he is also the victim of almost being drowned by his new found aunt.
