The novel The Slopes of War by N.A Perez forecasts the gruesome story if the Union Vs. Confederate war. At the time, President Abraham Lincoln was running the country and wanted to abolish slavery. The bonds between families were tested throughout the duration of the war. As the book progresses one of the main characters, Bekah Summerhill finds herself and develops into this new young woman. Along her character development journey, she also learns that you can not have the best of both worlds. The Summerhill family has been living their rural life in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Rebekah Summerhill is the only daughter in the Summerhill family. She starts off as a naïve and reckless 15-year-old. The excerpt from the book “Come on, …show more content…
This is mostly because of the new found love interest in her cousin Custis. Yes, this is an incest relationship. Part of my feels that she fell for her cousin cause Bekah didn’t really know who she was, she hasn’t really found herself due to that fact that she isn't very mature at the beginning of the book. While Bekah’s brother Buck is fighting for the Union Custis, the “love of her life” is fighting in the Confederate army. Their story is quite interesting because it is very much like a Romeo and Juliet story, in short they have a forbidden love situation. The quote “Maybe I shouldn’t feel for you the way I do…us being cousins and all… But I do, and it’s the best part of being in love.” {p.82} Really hit Bekah in the novel and the love for her cousin just grew after that. This quote also symbolized the coming of age and maturity development in her life, also Bekah has shown a lot more responsibility throughout her actions with Captain White, a captain came into the Summerhill's lives as an injured soldier and Bekah and her mother gladly took him in and are currently caring for him. “For the first time, she noticed the stiff dark stains all over her dress.” “If only we had been able to stop the bleeding.” {p.137} N.A Perez, the author of the novel most likely added this expert because it describes how different Bekah is starting to become. Her love Custis dies and the way Bekah is coping and dealing with his is very heartfelt and mature. The quote “She was ready when he came wearing Adam Waite’s torn and bloodstained jacket and his trousers, held with a belt.”{178} Really is a significant improvement from her childish behavior in the beginning of the book. Bekah took the risk and put on that ratty uniform just to see her love once again. “But I know it’s a day that I’ll never forget.” {p.186} this quote is one of the last pieces of dialogue from Bekah in the whole novel. As simple as it might sound I actually do think it holds a lot of meaning. All of her character forming basically came us because of the emotional woes that the war gave her. Everything that had to do with her love crust is formed her and all the conflicts that came along that were from the kin against kin situation between the family. When she says this quote it is also the end of the war and her 16th birthday the war has shaped and formed her go the new 16 years old she is today. This also goes for the rest of her family and many people that were around at the time. This war was something America would never

What This Cruel War Was Over is a book written by historian Chandra Manning. The book takes the reader from the start of the Civil War, the Union surrendering Fort Sumter in chapter one, to the end of the Civil War, with General Lee’s surrender and the aftermath of the war, in chapter six and the conclusion chapter. Throughout the introduction, six chapters, and conclusion, Manning brings to life what is happening on the battlefields and in the political arena. She also brings to life what is going on in the minds of both the Union and Confederate men and slaves. Manning adds a depth to her book by including photos and drawings at the start of each chapter to foreshadow the upcoming chapter and give life to the events that are about to unfold.
Necessity of Battle: Shelby Foote’s Perspective Political, economic, and social factors all fueled the start of the Civil War, and these causes continued to divide the nation throughout the war. These elements of influence overpowered the ability to come to an agreement through debate over the differing opinions; therefore, the Civil War started due to war necessity since fighting could end the disagreements. The North and South failed to come to a compromise, so they both fought a war in a deadly fashion. The Civil War resulted in more American casualties than any other previous war. After each military campaign, Shelby Foote calculates the number of deaths of the North and South and totals them.
Cinthya Garcia 12/8/14 3A/Clark The Killer Angels The novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara paints a story of the Civil War that took place at the battle of Gettysburg, and very well accomplished to both create a factual recounting of events and the emotional struggle that the war was responsible for. The book was incredibly descriptive as it gave the events that took place each day. It was honest as it didn’t dodge the casualties or tragedy that many seem to avoid or forget, and went deeper than the surface to convey the brutal reality of war. Due to this, it created a thought provoking sense of humanity that often gets lost when covering the facts of war.
The story Killer Angels provides an in-depth perspective of both Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War. The author, Michael Shaara, accomplishes a special feat due to the fact that throughout the novel he rarely breaks away from the factual aspects of America's bloodiest war. The Civil War had seemingly various causes despite numerous soldiers and outsiders believing it was entirely about slavery. The Union and Confederates weren't just fighting over the rights and ideas of slavery, they were fighting for much more. It was a power struggle.
The United States Civil War is possible one of the most meaningful, bloodstained and controversial war fought in American history. Northern Americans against Southern Americans fought against one another for a variety of motives. These motives aroused from a wide range of ideologies that stirred around the states. In James M. McPherson’s What they fought for: 1861-1865, he analyzes the Union and Confederate soldier’s morale and ideological components through the letters they wrote to love ones while at war. While, John WhiteClay Chambers and G. Kurt Piehler depict Civil War soldiers through their letters detailing the agonizing battles of war in Major Problems in American Military History.

Jill Lepore used quotes and images from English colonists and portraits to show how colonists wrote about their experiences during King Philip’s War and how the narrative of the war has changed throughout the centuries. It also sets how colonists will narrate wars for future centuries. She spoked about how their writings of the war had a consequence of temporally silencing the Native Americans version on the war and how people have forgotten or even have any knowledge of the war. She uses a Boston merchant, Nathaniel Saltonstall account tilted “A true but brief account of our losses since this cruel and mischievous war begun” written in July 1676 year after the war had begun. He lists towns such as Narragansett, Warwick, Seekonk and Springfield

Most people can understand that when a soldier comes back from war, he is not going to be the same. He has seen too much and done too much to still be the innocent boy he had been. In the novel, The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh, he not only puts the effect of war for soldiers, but for regular civilians as well. The novel is saying that war affects females even though they could not fight in war. The message is conveyed through female characters that have felt sorrow and emptiness during and after the war.
