Assessment of Pharoah Rivers (There Are No Children Here) Boimah B. Karmo Neberaska Wesleyan University Abstract Pharoah Rivers is a nine-year-old boy and the fifth of eight children. He is like any other nine-year old child that loves to play and seeks daily challenges. Pharoah and his family live in Chicago in the Henry Horner projects; a public housing complex that's overflowing with gangs, drugs, and the infliction of pain on others.

Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 tells the stories of a variety of people from L.A. and how the 1992 L.A. riots affected their lives. Anna Deavere Smith, the author, uses interviews to capture the experiences and tell her story. Smith chooses a variety of people to interview. People who actively took part in the riots, bystanders caught up in the events, news reporters capturing the story, and even police officers. Smith uses the introduction of the book to express her reasons for telling this story and even points out her own bias involving the events.

“The Undercurrent” by Kellie Young is a story of a mother and daughter’s relationship that takes place in Hawaii throughout Young’s childhood. It describes to readers how her mother has influenced her life by becoming an admonitory voice inside her head. The impact Young’s mother has on her is widely due to the amount of admiration Young has for her. A crucial element to “The Undercurrent” is the short stories found throughout her narrative that exemplifies the greater concept of how her mother has shaped her life.

How is it that two men that come from identical backgrounds end up being completely opposites? Wes Moore takes us back to his childhood growing up, and also introduces us to a character sharing the same name as him, and similarly, the same lifestyle. Raised in the white suburb town and the only black high school cheerleader Tupac 's music and lyrics helped her get through her interracial blend as an African American teen. Jenée expresses her emotions toward her former icon as a teen girl. In the contribution to his death, Jenée Recalls vivid descriptions of her obsession with her image through her teen-hood, when his passing accrued Jenée recollects her past and explains her vivid descriptions when he passed away. She described the moment of his death a tragic moment.

John Singleton’s film, Boyz N the Hood, displays the challenging upbringing of adolescents who have to live with harsh conditions around not only their home but also their surrounding town. The film compares the differences between the lifestyles of Tre Styles and his friends’, Darren and Ricky Baker. Darren and Ricky are half-brothers who are nothing alike. Singleton demonstrates the importance of male leadership in a home in the ghetto of Los Angeles by comparing the difference between the lifestyles of Tre and his friends. While many adolescents in the hood have close friendships, some form close relationships by assembling gangs and create a world of violence due to alcohol abuse, which together ultimately breeds discrimination.

Pheonix Jackson’s grandson is dead because she shows signs of dementia, she hesitates when asked about how the boy is doing, and she says words that imply the boy isn’t changing. The story “ A Worn Path” follows the difficult trip routinely made by Pheonix on foot to a nearby town for her grandson’s medicine which he needs for his swollen throat. Pheonix shows signs of dementia which would affect her perception of reality and her grandson being alive or dead. In the line, “At first she took it as a man,” referring to her encountering a scarecrow, Pheonix shows that her senses are inadequate enough to believe a scarecrow is a man dancing in a field (762). Pheonix is more reliant on her body remembering the trail than her sense of sight

The film Boyz N the Hood is a story about life in South Central Los Angeles. The film was wrote and directed by John Singleton in 1991. I chose this movie because of its relevance to the course and how it reflects pop culture in that time period. The opening line in the movie “one out of every twenty-one Black American males will be murdered in their lifetime” really catches the audience attention (Nicolaides & Singleton, 1991). This movie goes into detail and shows the life of three young males living in the hood of Los Angeles battling a life surrounded by drugs, violence, and questions of race.

In the play, Antigone, King Creon punished Antigone for giving her brother, Polyneices a proper burial. Creon believes Eteocles devers the burl with honor but not Polyneices because Polynices attacked Thebes and his own brother, braking his exile. King Creon is furious upon hearing the news and accuses the sentry of being bribed and demands him to bring who ever broke his decree to him. Creon is a scary king because the sentries throw dice to decide who will tell King Creon this terribly bad news, no one wants to tell the him.
