This essay will look at how interprofessional communication in health and social care can impact service-user safety. Interprofessional collaboration is when different health professions work together though the process of communication and shared decision making (Bridges, et al, 2011). In such a complex environment such as the NHS were one service-user could be treated by several different professions it’s important to service-user safety that these teams are cohesive. Communication between these different groups is imperative, failure in communication can be detrimental to service-user safety. Failures in communication and co-ordination can have massive adverse effect, such as in the case of Victoria Climbie were these failures lead to the …show more content…
Failing in service-user safety can sometimes be attributed to communication failure, however communication is one of the most important tools in preventing such failures. The ability to communicate effectively as a team stems from understanding the various professions in the team (Gluyas & Morrison, 2013). Understanding the various roles allows for an insight into how the healthcare system links together and the part each roles plays in provision of care. Additionally it aides in building trust and respect amongst team members (Gluyas & Morrison, 2013). This in turn can be linked to improved service-user safety, because it allows for role relation and see their part in the service-user care pathway. It is perceived that multi-disciplinary collaboration when it comes to service-user care is linked to more positive outcomes and experiences (Clifton et al., 2007). Teams which are able to communicate and are well coordinated have a lower rate of error (Despins, 2009). An effective team can be achieved through an effective model of communication, where members of each profession can openly share their opinions and challenge the opinions of others, in the hopes of improving service-user care and thus service-user safety. However, this type of honesty can only work well when there is a mutual respect and understanding within a team. Mutual respect, understanding teamed with effective communication lead to a …show more content…
The NHS is set in a way that all professions aim to work towards a common goal, the 6 C’s. These are Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage and Commitment (NHS England, 2012). They were created in the hope that they would lead to a more complete service-user experience. The values are an important part of service-user safety. The 6C’s are there to help minimise incidences like those that occurred in the Mid-Staffordshire trust. Working with those value systems should cause a reduction in failures of service-user safety. Two years after the implementation of the 6C’s it was found that there were improvements in service-user satisfaction and communication (NHS England, 2014). Kalisch et al, 2007 found that efficient group work saw increased levels of job satisfaction, service-user satisfaction, quality of care and most importantly service-user safety. The delivery of safe care relies heavily on effective team working (Despins, 2009). Research conducted by the Joint commission concluded that failure in teamwork and communication were contributing factors for adverse events (Gluyas & Morrison, 2013). This could be due to the effects team working has on staff wellbeing and satisfaction (Agrawal, 2013). When staff are more motivated to do their job well there is a decrease in the rate of error (Agrawal, 2013). It was found that deficiencies in teamwork led to the
Communication in the operating room is very important. If surgeons and nurses are not communicating effectively it can directly affect the quality of patient care and safety. In 1999, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a report, To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, which estimated the fifth leading cause of death in hospitals in the United States was due to health care errors (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, Freida, 2016). To help reduce these errors, effective communication needs to be exercised throughout health care.
Finally, it will explain the importance of ethics in communication and how patient safety is influenced by good or bad team communication. The first method of communication is mutual respect. The patient and clinician have a partnership based on trust. The patient has respect for the clinician 's experience and the clinician has respect for the patient 's wishes, needs, concerns and builds on past experience to meet immediate needs. (Paget, 2011).
7 / D.P7: Explain how different procedures maintain health and safety in a selected health or social care setting Maintaining health and safety in health and social care is extremely important to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all their service users as well as other individuals service providers may come in contact with in the setting. There are several procedures that help to maintain this health and safety however they can all vary between settings for example, health and safety procedures will be slightly different and more focused on certain areas in hospitals and especially in paediatric ward compared to in drop-in centres where the needs and risk to service users are slightly different. Some of the procedures used in health and social care to maintain health and safety include; infection control and prevention, safe moving and handling of equipment and individuals, food preparation and storage, storage and administration of medication and storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
Communication in nursing is known for its life saving success as well as its greatest flaw in poor patient outcomes. There is always room for improvement and when communication is carried out efficiently, healthcare professionals have reaped the benefits. However, there have been many instances in which nurses have had to learn the hard way of how detrimental communication can be to patient safety. Through research and reviews of literature, the topic of patient safety related to handoff communication among units is analyzed.
Patient safety experts have demonstrated that “patient safety increases when teamwork and collaboration skills are taught and empowered; when teamwork and collaboration are not present, medical errors will result” (Creasia & Friberg, 201, p. 348). As a nurse, it is imperative to collaborate with other interdisciplinary members in health care and also strive to research and implement evidence-based practices. Evidence-based practice is necessary to “ensure the highest quality of cost-effective care and the best patient outcomes” (Fineout-Overholt, 2011, para. 16). With a collaborative and innovative attitude on safe health care practices, an increase in patient safety and effectiveness of care will
Task 2 7 / C.P6: Compare the influence of different health and safety laws or policies on health and social care practice in a selected setting There are several different health and safety laws and policies that vary between settings in health and social care aimed towards different legislations that must be followed, and have resulted in improvements in health and social care practice. It is important that these legislations are followed by service providers in order for them to promote safe practice and to fully understand their responsibilities under these legislations. Some of the legislations include the Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974, the Data Protection Act 1998, the Care Act 2014, the Care Standards Act 2000 and the Equality Act 2010.
The concern for safety has become a bigger and more important issue, and these two departments are forming a relationship. Although it has been the tradition for these two departments to work separately, they both have a common goal, to oversee the safety and excellence in healthcare organizations. Some smaller organizations have always had the same person control quality and risk and remained successful. These days, we are seeing a lot more collaborations, goal sharing, ad idea exchanging among these two groups (Perry, 2007). Risk management is critical to every organization.
We can help our service users reduce the risks, as support workers we have a duty of care to not let harm, abuse or injury happen. We can do this by compromising, by still letting them have independence and there is minimal risk. For example, they may want to make a cup of coffee, but the hot water can burn them, we can support them by letting them prepare their cup of coffee, and the support workers pour the hot water. We can also write a risk assessment for the service user, to show that they accept the consequences of the outcome. This way, both parties get what they want from it, reduced risk.
Effective communication is a key component of interprofessional practice to provide the best care for a patient treated by a multidisciplinary team. In my future profession as an occupational therapist there will be many important roles and responsibilities to consider across different specialities. They need to learn the various pieces and functions of communication in diverse areas of nursing. According to Garrett (2016), to maintain patient safety communication should be consistent, comprehensive, transparent, concise, and appropriate, consequently, leading to interacting and connecting with patients who demonstrated to improve results, reduce costs, and improve the patient’s understanding. A study conducted by Daly (2017), states that they are four themes nurses should utilize in their daily practice: 1. Prioritise people, 2. Practise effectively, 3.
As a consequence of the boost in communication, significantly less misdiagnoses are experienced. Thus, both the patient and medical facility benefit from the reduction in unnecessary readmissions. This undoubtedly places value on the importance of giving the correct initial treatment to patients through the act of successful interprofessional care.(7) Interprofessional education undeniably develops communication skills throughout the healthcare system.
