Summary and Symbolism in “A Rose for Emily” In “A Rose for Emily,” the author, Faulkner, describes the life of a women after the death of her family and the abandonment of her friends. The story is about a female named Emily whose father dies of natural causes, and she is left with little money except for her house and an African American manservant. The manservant is a very loyal person who stays by Emily’s side till her own death. This story is depicted from the neighbor’s point about the lady Emily. It recounts her life as she lived it from an external perspective. The end of the story, however, reveals her beau to be dead for some years, possibly murdered by Emily herself. An important theme in this 1930 story was how the traditions of the South were vanishing as modernism encroached such as new sidewalks. In this novel, we can see that O 'Brien utilizes what each individual soldier carries. This is not only to characterize the physical turmoil they endured but also their mental mayhem. For example, when O’Brien opens his writing with "First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha, a junior at Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey” (O 'Brien 615). As we can assume, the letters do not weigh much physically. However, we can see how much it starts to weigh on him mentally because of the love Jimmy Cross has for Martha.
