Symbolism In The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1983

Brother sometimes fight but they eventually get over them as time goes on. In the book Watsons Go to Birmingham -1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis,one of the main characters, is becoming an average teenager and gets in arguments with Kenny another main character. However as time goes on they realize they need each other during horrific event that place, as they take a journey to Birmingham, Alabama. Kenny and Byron’s relationship in the beginning of the story was skeptical,their not always liking each other and their not always hating each other. In chapter 4 Froze up southern Folks,”Byron helps Kenny stand up to Larry Dunn, but also gives Kenny a pop in the stomach for not hitting Larry hard enough when he had the chance”.

Change Characters? Characters change right? Well, who has changed the most in “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” the two semi-final candidates are Byron and Kenny. In my belief it’s Byron.

From 1954-1968 black people were not safe, every Every day they would be scared to go outside because blacks were tortured and beat and even killed. In the book Watsons go to Birmingham The Watsons lived in Flint michigan and they took a drive to go see their grandma and to take Byron there too. She lived in Alabama so they got there car all ready to go and drove to Alabama.

What’s With the Watsons? Many people assume that when death comes it can be very scary. This is evident in the historical fiction novel, The Watsons Go To Birmingham, 1963, by Christopher Paul when see the Wool Pooh and the bombing at the church. When the Watsons are in Birmingham, Kenny sees the Wool Pooh that almost kills him and that the bombing at church was scary and close to death.

“The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is a short story that is told by a brother reminiscing about his departed young brother Doodle. The story is focused around Brother’s sorrow and regret for Doodles death and thus forms Brother as a sort of villain. Brother’s lack of maturity and careless actions throughout the story are what paint him as having too much pride. Brother is able to look back and see a monster because he has come-of-age through coping for Doodle’s death. James Hurst answers the question what does it mean to come-of-age in the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” through Brother teaching Doodle to walk, the impact of Doodle’s death, and Brother’s reflection at the beginning and throughout the story.

Growing up is something that we all experience some time in our lives. Whether we eagerly await or stubbornly resist it, the coming of age is an inevitable and crucial time in our lives that builds up our character and personality. Correspondingly, in Something Wicked This Way Comes, Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade are both struggling to go through this transition as they face the temptation and evil that comes along with growing up. In the fantasy novel Something Wicked This Way Comes, Bradbury applies the theme of coming of age through the difference of mentalities, the change of self identity, and finally their approach to the world.

The Watsons go to Birmingham -1963- Theme The 1960’s, a very dark era indeed. Racism, sexsim, and critizsim-the 1960’s is not a time that I would want to live in. It was depressing and crestfallen. But the Watsons still managed to keep their heads high and their hopes up throughout this crisis.

Have you ever rode in a car for more than 24 hours? The plot in the book of “Watson’s Go To Birmingham”, is about a family going on a trip to Birmingham in 1963 and experience an event that makes them see how wrong color in the south are treated. The plot in the movie is more about how colored had been fighting for their rights and all the event leading up to everyone becoming equal. In “Watson’s Go To Birmingham”, lots of events changed the plot like the movie is focused mainly on Civil Rights while the book isn 't, but Joey leaves the church before it blows up in both, so there are some similarities. There are many differences between the book and the movie, like in the book they all stayed down at Grandma Sands, but in the movie the dad didn’t stay with them.

The Watsons go to Birmingham All of the Watsons live in Flint, Michigan where they all go to school at Clark Elementary. Kenny is sort of self inspired as in he don 't get noticed a lot and don 't have many friends and gets picked on and bullied at school. He eventually becomes friends with the new kid that goes to their school and at first Kenny thinks that the bullies will have someone new to pick on because he’s not rich, he’s raggedy and he don 't talk like the other kids, he has a southern accent. On the other hand, Byron is the bad kid (until they arrive in Alabama).

I mean I knew about sickness, violence, death, all that good stuff, but I just sort of blew it off because nothing in my life had happened to where I needed to face those things. When I was 12 during spring break, I was as happy as any child would be on their spring vacation, but one day my parents pulled me and my brother aside and told us some pretty devastating news. They had told us that our grandfather had passed away in a house fire a few days ago.

The weird Watsons go to Birmingham and experience a tragic event. With all that is happening in Birmingham the Watsons change. The change that happens in the Watsons is typical of the change in America. The Watsons are a typical family like me and you. The problem is that they all was find a way to help each other out in weird ways.

The poem “Making Sarah Cry” and the play “The Watsons go to Birmingham” have the similar theme of being different. In “Making Sarah Cry” Sarah is different from the other kids on the playground. In “The Watsons go to Birmingham” the Watson family has a different skin color so they are separated from whites to do everyday tasks. The texts, both share a similar theme, but have different qualities. For example, in “Making Sarah Cry” only two people are excluded from playing with kids because of their differences.
