In the article, “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor”, Bell Hooks, Gloria Watkins penname, conveys three important things about the lower class: The ways people of lower class are treated in our society, how the mass media portrays them, and how people of lower-class see themselves. People who are poor or near the poverty line are often not represented properly in our current society. Furthermore, when hooks attended Stanford University, she noticed that many of her peers and even professors would make judgements about the poor. In addition, while many of her peers could go home during the breaks, Hooks couldn’t because she could not afford to visit family.

One of the most outstanding figures of the Black Feminism, Anna Julia Cooper, fought irresistibly for the black women`s rights. Because of her stance, she was often called “the voice of the South” (Rosser-Mims, 2010). She argued that a black woman “is confronted by both a woman question and a race problem, and is as yet an unknown or an unacknowledged factor in both” (Cooper, 1969). African American women have to struggle with discrimination against their race and, at the same time, they have to fight for recognition in their workplaces where leadership positions are usually occupied by men. Cooper wanted to prove that women can succeed in every spheres of life and should be treated equally with men.

Not approaching the traditional look on feminism, but looking at the internal approach of gender and races roles, she crafts an argument to explore pleasure rather than solely pain. In the first chapter of this work, Archives of Pain she utilizes seminal works of Black Feminist to collectively analyze how traditional Black feminist theory sees the dominant representation of Black women. Through the lens of bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins, Janell Hobson, Cox, Carla Williams, and several others Nash presents the common argument amongst these Black Feminist writers is that visually the dominant representation inflicts violence of the Black female body. With a background in sociology, Nash breaks down this chapter in four sections and explains representation as pedagogy, as temporal practice, as metonymy, and as a site for recovery.

Intersectional analysis still matter because race still matters in this generation. Intersectional analysis is a theory of discrimination with an individual identity, race, sex, age, and other characteristics. I personally think that not only women face intersectionality but men do as well. In this essay, I will argue that bell hooks’ main argument is how white people do not know what people of colour are going through and how “whiteness” has more privileges then the blacks. hooks approach is intersectional because people of colour are being treated as slaves to the “white” just because of their race and at times their gender.

Sheryl Sandberg expresses her opinions and explains how white women are expected to work harder and by her saying this it creates an argument that hooks counters to. hooks begins to counter argument throughout the whole article because she doesn't agree with Sandberg on how she only talks strictly about women in general instead of recognizing the differences between women. As Sandberg says “most American girls are led to have a modest career expectations and to focus more on having a family, while boys are typically raised to aim for leadership positions”(658). hooks doesn't see this as equality because men and women should both be treated equally and be able to focus on all aspects of life.

Frederick Douglass’s “What the Black Man Wants” captures the need for change in post Civil War America. The document presses the importance for change, with the mindset of the black man being, ‘if not now then never’. Parallel to this document is the letter of Jourdon Anderson, writing to his old master. Similar to Douglas, Mr. Anderson speaks of the same change and establishes his worth as freed man to his previous slave owner. These writings both teach and remind us about the evils of slavery and the continued need for equality, change, and reform.

When Chicken Heads Come Home To Roost Traditionally, women have been made to endure many problems and barriers that hinder their success. Women did not enjoy any rights in traditional society. A woman was neglected, isolated, and abused. Gender discrimination was common and women had their roles significantly reduced.

Through this section, Gross spoke about how laws existed to protect people, but black women were considered to be extremely sexual beings thus the law said that black women did not deserve to be protected. Gross used the experience of a woman named Hester and the using this experience in Gross’s writing made the talk about slavery much more effective. Furthermore, women were actually punishable by death if they choose to fight against their captors. Which further discussed the issues of being denied protection but fatally condemned by it at the same time. The last argument that Gross makes discussed how even though there were less African American living in a city compared to Caucasian or Latinos, but, female African Americans still took up 47.5% of prisoners.

The concept of Blackness or black skin was used for both external and internal characteristics of a “black group” or “race”. Blackness is defined in the “Critical Perspectives on Bell Hook” by Arnold Farr as “the social construction of essentialist racial identities is oppressive and dehumanizing for people of African descent.” According to Farr, the essentialist racial identity is intensified by the system of white supremacy and maintained and perpetuated by blacks who are victims of racial essentialism. Bell Hooks urges, that” racial identity must be deconstructed and calls for a deconstruction of race and post-modern blackness as a way blacks asserting emancipation from white supremacy.”

In the novel, The Bell Jar, the protagonist Esther Greenwood, struggles to reach her own personal goals in a male-dominant society. The main character, Esther was expected to marry a man to become a housewife that will clean the house, support him, and nurture him. Esther has always nurtured her goals of her own and has never wanted to simply help a husband. In the novel, The Bell Jar, Mrs. Willard educates his son Buddy the way society views femininity and the roles of women. As Mrs. Willard explains to Buddy, “What a man is is an arrow into the future, and what a woman is the place the arrow shoots off from” (Plath 67).

Although critics claim that Beyonce’s album portrays the black woman as the ‘victim,’ Lemonade instead empowers black women to freely express themselves and their ‘anger’ because there is no greater oppression than suffering in silence. Truly, Bell Hooks’ claim that “much of the album stays within a conventional stereotypical framework, where the black woman is always a victim,” is false and insensitive. Black feminism will be the approach utilized here to see the oppression of woman of color because it includes sexism, classism and racism. Since the female characters are very dominant in the novel, a black feminist approach should be very effective and it enables one to see how the female characters deal with the past and live with it in the present, what motherhood mean to the female characters, and how much the past influences the female characters who lives in the present. The end of the novel reveals the forgiveness and the acceptance not only of the black community toward Sethe’s choice (killing her daughter) but also of the white people (the Bodwins) who accepted Denver to work for them. This reconciliation shows that the courage and the will to get rid off from the past to live side by side peacefully and to move toward the future together.

A constant comparison and contrast between Maggie and Dee is prominent structural feature of the narrative. This structural strategy helps in conceptualizing the plurality of female experience within the same milieu. This strategy encapsulates another dimension of womanism, viz. , womanism refuses to treat black woman as a homogeneous monolith. Unlike feminist position, womanism is sensitive to change with time.
