The strategic purpose of school governors is to support the school in many ways. This includes, making sure there is a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction within the school. They support the head teacher and hold them accountable for the educational performance of the school and its pupils. They will oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is spent in the right areas. They will also carry out a number of other significant duties, which include the appointing and dismissing of staff, hearing appeals and grievances, forming policy on the school's curriculum, setting standards for pupils' behaviour and discipline and setting and monitoring the school's aims and policies.

The mission is more about what the school can achieve academically and physically which is often set out by the head teacher. This is often set out as a short and meaningful motto such as; believe and you will achieve, achieve and you will succeed. The ethos of the school is more about feelings and beliefs and a sense of pride for the school and the feeling of a caring environment that adopts cooperation and respect. This is set out for the whole school to be aware of and is reinforced on a daily basis this is done by staff through activities. It enforces that childrenâ€TMs safety is paramount and that children are the center of everything.
These are some examples of a schools aims and missions • Learn the knowledge and skills to lead healthy lives • Provide an environment where children feel safe and learn independent skills to begin to look after themselves • Enjoy learning and school life; and to achieve their full potential • Make a positive contribution to the school, the wider community and to become citizens capable of making a positive contribution to society • Develop skills and knowledge that will provide the basis for them to achieve economic well-being in their later lives.
