More often than none, the term, grit is used to describe someone who sees the finish line and does not give up their quest to finish the race. Maybe it is why a 40 year old movie, like “Rocky” was nominated for numerous awards. When we are young if our parents don’t teach us how to get through the tough times and hand things over to us, then we become adults we may never achieve our long-term goals through self-control and stamina exceeding our limitations. Where do we begin to teach kids how succeed? It is mentioned that our parents are the catalyst for teaching children not to be conditionalized with their thinking. A growth mindset will enable a child to focus on a goal and achieve that goal through hard work and not quitting. It is crucial in developing a grit from the start that parents and the school’s work together and mold young minds into strong characters. Back in 2013, Angela Duckworth, a psychology professor from the University of Pennsylvania, did extensive research and developed a foundation to cultivate grit into the school system. Educators are starting to embrace the strategies that are becoming a part of innovative curriculum that is being infiltrated in our schools. Is this good news? Well, take a look at some of the thinking that is a part of the new framework and think for yourself. We are told to tell children, good job even if they didn’t really put in the work to get the right answer, or face brick walls that they didn’t have to climb over. With acknowledging this paradigm shift, it is important that you don’t say good job to a child. They must really put in the work to understand what it takes to achieve the right answer. So hence; do not praise or reward a child unless they understand the value of performance. It is the journey, not about the destination. With this certain aspect, it is also implemented to not accept, “I don’t know” as an answer. But, it is crucial for the educator to push the student to understand the process of problem solving. Most of us are taught that it is NOT ok, to quit. Is this still right? Well most of us who want to get the prize are taught this at a young age. But, it is important to also know the talents of the child. It is acceptable to quit, under the exception that the child may not have the skill level for a task or a
I realise I should have praised and encouraged the children more. When Karen was giving me advice she stressed the importance of praise because encourages that child to continue the behaviour in future and also motivates others to join in, she said this was known as positive reinforcement. She explained to me that the children should not only be praised for giving the right answer but also for attempting to involve themselves and speaking out. She also described many other things out with floor book that children should be praised for. For example when they use good listening skills, share well with others and are kind.

She focuses on having a growth mindset, since most people that obtain a growth mindset are most likely to be more successful in life.

The Greatness in Grit There are many important human traits but I am only going to be talking about one that one trait is grit. Grit is a strong trait that some people have and other people don’t it is not something that can be taught it is something that must always be there and most people have some amount of grit big or small it always makes a difference in their character and their integrity. Grit is strength and courage it is the ability to stand up to a bully or stand up for your beliefs or the beliefs of other people and the ability to keep going when everyone else gives up It is the ability to go past your comfort zone and to stop being mediocre or normal and to never give up and to push past the breaking point even when it feels
Grit and having a growth mindset have been a great asset when it comes to success. The general idea of being gritty is having motivation to push through obstacles despite the difficulty. A growth mindset is someone who will look at what they have as just the beginning start to what could be, opposed to believing that what they start with is what they are limited to. The two together are a great package because if an individual had a growth mindset perspective and the drive of being gritty, they will see a challenge and keep going regardless of failure and setback that will lead to accomplishing their desired task instead of giving up.
If a college student can learn to continually better his grades by looking for assistance, putting his assignments and tests before his social life, and being responsible for his work and its outcome, then he has the grit it takes to be more successful. Learning to persevere in challenging times such as college can not only help one get their degree, but it will also assist him in the hardships to come in the real world such as working to make enough money to pay bills or meet deadlines. It is not to say that a student who does not use grit will never be successful, but he will never have as much success as one who uses it day in and day out. In the future, when one is finally in the workforce, he can either think “Wow, I really wish I was still in college because I never had to work this hard before,” or “Wow, I am so glad I learned to work hard in college because it has really paid off for me, and I feel as if I barely work a day in my life.” Which thought will you have when you reach this
