To help students succeed, the State of Texas sets plans and processes to govern and evaluate what students know and understand (TEA, 2021). Teachers must address the curricular needs of each student to evaluate what they know. How is the process governed, and what is required? What should we be doing? The Texas Education Agency (TEA, 2021) governs what schools should be teaching students at every level and ultimately how that knowledge is assessed. I want to discuss what the state of Texas is focused on, the implications, and ultimately the failings. I also want to look at alternatives that can hopefully get us to a student-centered place that we can all celebrate as educators.
In Texas, there are two areas of focus. foundational curriculum

The effort needs to focus on every child and their needs. In his work as an education guru, Robert Marzano offers guidance that could lead us toward curriculum and instruction that celebrate student learning and achievement, but more importantly, growth. Formal assessments are good if they reflect points in the students journey, not as a one and done grade (Marzano, 2013). Formal assessments for students should only represent points on a performance scale. Marzano noted that "characteristics of sound feedback" include that it should be frequent, give students a clear picture of their progress and how they might improve, and provide encouragement. (Robert J. Marzano, Classroom Assessment and Grading That Work, 2006) Students should be on an effective roadmap. Effective learning scales address many needs to help students know and understand where they are and where they should be going (Marzono, 2013). Learning targets should involve fostering student understanding of how they fit in the picture. Understanding relationships and embracing the cultures that are reflected in the classroom make it a shared curriculum by creating learning targets along the
This is a key part in schools today because it’s enforcing a higher bar of achievement for teachers and students (Catapano, 2018). Implementing standards into a school system that are internationally benchmarked means all states and countries have a way of measuring their academic performance. They can use this also as a tool to compile scores and understand the weaknesses to improve students’ knowledge. This provides teachers with various ways to assess their students more frequently through observations and informal assessments to understand the student’s comprehension level of the lesson material. It will help the teachers to strive to improve her test scores by adapting lesson materials to the needs of each
From studying education, I have noticed how many school districts teach based upon what the students will be tested over. As a future educator, I feel as if a standardized test cannot determine what a student is capable of. The individuals creating the test often don’t realize that many students suffer from test anxiety, in fear of failing the test and what is more fearful is how the school districts pressure the teachers to stress to the students the importance of passing the test. Also, in this chapter Boaler describes assessment for learning as having three components clear communication about what students have learned, a way to help students understand where they are on their journey to mastery and where they still need to improve, and information on ways to get from where students are currently to where they need to be to meet success criteria. This chapter offered several strategies that will help students have a better grasp of where they are in the learning process and that will help them develop and maintain a growth mindset.
In reviewing the Arizona Department of Education’s, (ADE) career and technical education (CTE) program standards for the emergency medical services (EMT), it became clear that the State of Arizona operates from an abbreviated version of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards. The curriculum for EMT is a national standard curriculum and is the foundation of EMS prehospital training. In addition, the new curriculum parallels the recommendations of the National EMS Education. The ADE, uses the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) testing as the summative assessment upon completion of the program secondary and post-secondary schools. Although the ADE has a significant role in the continuous success of EMT programs and curriculum, the students and educational programs are directed by the Arizona Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (AZBEMS).
Texas, since its admittance into the United States, has attempted to make public education a priority, but has often struggled for centuries to find an adequate solution to the issues that surround public education. The Texas constitution that was created in 1876, established that public education was a priority, but has often struggled due to the hinderance of factors such as limited financial resources, racial and socioeconomic divisions, and political resistance to progressive reforms.[1] There have been several reforms put into play such as the Robin Hood plan and the Edgewood litigation, however none have been successful. In recent times, Texas has explored the option of tax credits and vouchers to allow for a better education for the
The Tempe School District, are proud to share our letter grades. We have a great deal to celebrate and we have ongoing work to do to show continuous improvement in all of our classrooms. We teach to the whole child and not every area is tested or accounted for in letter grades. We value accountability and the transparency that comes with it. Putting a lens on our student acheivement and student growth is an opportunity to continue the conversation about the hard work that takes place every day in our
The members of the Texas Coalition for Excellence in Higher Education also believe that the nation and the state must establish the pursuit of knowledge as top priority. The goal of the Texas Coalition for Excellence in Higher Education, as one of the interest groups involved in the higher education iron triangle, is to promote an improved quality of higher education. Each member of an iron triangle plays a role that benefits other members of the triangle, and, in return, receives an equal amount of benefits from them. As a member of the iron triangle, Texas Coalition for Excellence in Higher Education votes on issues that benefits the bureaucrats’ jobs and contributes greatly to the advancement of the bureaucrats’ careers. Texas Coalition for Excellence in Higher Education also gives favorable testimonies about the bureaucracies
Issues in Texas Education Education is a very important topic to me and many other people in this state. The technology in this world has become a great tool for the education system but with technology comes a price. And our government doesn’t seem to realize schools need more money to be able to teach their kids more effectively and keep them involved and entertained in the subjects they are learning. From 2007 to 2016 the overall expenditures of the education system have increased by 18.3 Billion dollars. That is a major increase in funding that the Texas government isn’t noticing that we need more money to fund our local school.
In Austin, Texas, members of the Texas State Board of Education use persuasion to gain votes for their personal beliefs on whether teaching methods and textbook standards should be revised or upheld. Among the board members are citizens who are a variety of educators. Also, there are experts who come to voice their knowledge of new findings, and debate about old and new educational facts. Although there were experts, there was much debate on spoken facts.
Before this course I did not know much about Texas’s government and how it operated. I had made some connections from my prior knowledge, from taking another government course. These connections that I made was the types of elections held and polls used in each election. This course has allowed me to better understand how the Texas government operates, which I didn’t know before. I now know that the governor of Texas is Greg Abbott, we have a bicameral legislature, and there are 31 members in the senate and 150 in the house.
Educational system in Arizona In my essay I will be talking about the Arizona education system. I will be writing what I think about the education system and what other people think. Firstly, It is widely known that Arizona does not have one of the best education systems.
The Nevada Department of Education oversees public schools all across the state of Nevada and is in charge of managing the state's educational system. Nevada's educational system, however, has faced several difficulties recently and continues to do so. Nevada has low graduation rates and school dropout, placing it among the bottom in terms of educational outcomes. Despite an increase in graduation rates in recent years, there is still significant room for improvement in the state. The state also has a teacher shortage, particularly in fields with high demand notably that revolve around STEM math, science, and in special education.
Introduction Public school education in the United States require that teachers perform at a high level to meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind. It is arguable that for teachers to meet this standard certain conditions must be provided to them at the school level. This paper will summarize these suggestions and also discuss related recommendations for the implementation of Common Core State Standards. These will then be compared to Tanners support of a professional culture.
All students should have access to a rigorous, comprehensive education that includes critical thinking, problem solving, high level of communication and literacy skills, and a deep understanding of content. Curriculum that is aligned with standards and assessments and should include more than what can be assessed on a paper and multiple-choice test. Schools, districts, states, and the federal government should be financially accountable to the public, with policymakers accountable to provide the resources needed to produce positive results. Policies should assist and encourage parents, families, and communities to be actively involved and engaged in their public schools. These policies should require professional development programs for all
I incorporate this learned experience daily and learn through each success and discovered area of improvement. Addressing my students needs using a variety of assessment tools has been a beneficial practice to help guide instruction. Students have different learning styles and their strengths and weaknesses are not always apparent using the same methods of assessment. Utilizing formative, standards(goal)-based, anecdotal, observational and benchmarks has driven my instructional programs. The combination of different assessments provides me with a multi-dynamic perspective of my students allowing me to better understand their strengths, weakness and academic needs.
It is my goal to make sure students are not just memorizing facts, but are actually understanding. They should be able to take the lesson and apply it to other areas of their lives. I believe students need to be assessed frequently and routinely. The students need accurate and effective feedback, so they can make any necessary adjustments.
