One of those things was that he did not rob or steal anybody else’s money for over a year. “I've quit the old business--a year ago” (a letter Jimmy sent his friend Billy). Intro #1 Imagine a man, going to bed after working hard for civil rights and his religion. He goes to sleep and in the night, the police sneak in and place bombs in his windowsill. The night is quiet and peaceful, serene, when an explosion occurs in the nearby church. People rush outside, hostile and armed, worried about their religious and civil rights leader. Then, he rises out of the rubble, unscathed, almost as though he was protected with holy intervention.

Redemption is the act of being saved from acts of evil and sin. The debate of whether human nature is redeemable or not has been one to plaque religious scholars. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, this question continues in the interactions between the characters; the most notable being the Grandmother of a rather horrible family and the Misfit, a murderer. While on a road trip, these two characters’ paths collide and lead to a rather unfortunate end where the Grandmother and her family are killed. While many readers believe the ending creates and overall negative tone of the story, some believe that there is a hope for redemption; the story’s author O’Connor who is a devoted Catholic included.

Frado tastes the freedom that accompanies citizenship when she realizes that she, like all other people, has the chance to enter Heaven. Despite Frado’s moment of freedom and equality with Christianity, Mrs. Bellmont attempts to take away her right to worship and, therefore, her ability to become an equal in the eyes of God: “her mistress had told her it would ‘do no good to attempt prayer; prayer was for whites, not for blacks’” (Wilson 94). In Hughes’s short essay, which he ironically titles “Salvation,” he tells the reader about one of his most significant childhood memories. Hughes provides background about a huge revival at his aunt’s church. He flashes forward to the day where he was supposed to be called upon by Jesus and greeted by a bright light his aunt repeatedly tells him about. Hughes recalls that he sat on the mourners’ bench right in the front row with the rest of the unsaved children.

Short stories are written to share a lesson, or show and experience for the reader to relate to their own lives. Most stories show a challenge that someone has to overcome, such as a physical threat, or a mental confrontation that they have to face. In the story “Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, one of the two main characters, Lemon Brown, faced both types of challenges while having taught a message to the protagonist Greg Ridley. LIkewise, in the story “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones caught a child named Roger who tried to steal her purse for a pair of shoes. When thrown into a problematic situation, even without a similar background in the slightest, Lemon Brown and Mrs. Jones address their problems similarly..

When comparing and contrasting the two short stories “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Revelation” written by Flannery O’Connor, many similarities are noticed between the main characters as well as many differences. The author of the short stories based them on rejection and redemption in the modern world and it is shown in both stories. The Grandmother and Mrs. Turpin are similar and opposite when comparing being selfish and hypocritical, as well the amount of grace in each character’s life’s. Both the grandmother from “A Good Man is Had to Find” and Mrs. Turpin from “Revelation” are selfish characters but show their selfishness in different ways.

What is even more ironic is that despite all the criticism, these so-called coincidences do not exist in the story. According to VC King, author of Titanic, “The probability of a certain set of circumstances coming together in a meaningful (or tragic) way is so low that it simply cannot be considered mere coincidence.” Everything happens for a reason.

“ I have done things too, which I will not tell you,” Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones said to Roger the boy that tried to steal her purse. In the story “ Thank You Ma 'am ” I believe that Mrs Jones is caring because Mrs. Jones brings Roger into her house, and tries to help Roger. The most obvious why Mrs.Jones is caring is because she lets Roger into her house even when he tried to steal her purse, I know I would never just let him in my house if he tried to steal my purse I would of called the police. First of all she brings Roger to her house and then makes him dinner. I would never make a boy dinner who tried to steal my purse.

Beside the terrifying horrors, written by Stephen King, the realistic and deeply psychological novel “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank redemption” seems very unusual. It lacks horrific clowns or extremely dangerous viruses, but still attracts the reader’s attention. Despite the powerful psychological background, the social motives in the story-line prevail. Through the images of Andy Dufresne, description of in-prison social reality and lesser characters, the author depicts the entire American society with the wide range of its internal problems, values and concerns.

Jazmyne Nelson Dr. Rose English 101 December 11, 2017 Literary Analysis Langston Hughes’ short story entitled “Thank You Ma’am”, analyzes the interaction between Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones and Roger. It presents the readers, the idea of goodness, the theme of trust, forgiveness, and kindness. Hughes is able to convert a language that is easier to understand by characterizing the context of story, advancing important themes, and using dialogue among the characters. Trust is one of themes that stood out while analyzing the short story. Though Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones has been victimized Roger worries that she won’t trust him, so he moves.

While it is true that Price witnessed Valentine breaking into the Elmore Bank’s safe, Jimmy was only doing good. He meant no harm to others. In fact, all he wanted to do was rescue Agatha from suffocating inside of the safe. Once Agatha was safe in her mother’s arms, Jimmy made a courageous decision and confronted Ben Price to admit his guilt.

The theme of short story “Thank You M’am”, written by Langston Hughes, exemplifies how we should trust others for help when we need it. One piece of evidence to support this theme is when Mrs. Jones left the door open after she brought Roger inside “She switched on the light and left the door open.” This evidence shows us that if Roger doesn’t trust her then he can leave, but when he does trust Mrs. Jones he knows that he will be able to wash his face and make himself look presentable. Another piece of evidence shown in the story is presented when Roger doesn’t sit next to her pocketbook, “But the boy took care to sit on the far side of the room, away from her purse …”. This evidence shows us that Roger very much wants to be trusted by Mrs.
