Why I chose the book: I chose to read The Book Thief because of its setting in the Second World War. The events which occurred during this period, with specific reference to the holocaust, interest me. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a Novel by John Boyne is what sparked this interest. The expressive writing technique of the novel provokes the utmost emotion within the reader. For this reason I enjoy reading literature which makes reference to historical events which have been considered to have plagued history. Writers produced during these times in history seem to deliver writing which appeals to humanity and which draw emotion from the reader making the content griping and memorable. Summary of the plot: The setting of the novel, as described …show more content…
The sentences are mostly simple sentences, as opposed to long drawn- out descriptive sentences seen in many other forms of literature. This draws particular attention to the short interjecting sentences which seem to make the point ever so bluntly. This is effective as the book is being narrated by death itself which carries its own connotations of abruptness and bluntness. The continuous use of simple sentences throughout the book, one underneath the other, seems to create an uncomfortable atmosphere for the reader. This is because death and the ill treatment of people during the Second World War is often an uncomfortable subject and thus making the reader experience this discomfort is a success for the …show more content…
In the film, the main character, Liesel Meminger, plays less of a role as a 'criminal' as she does in the Novel. In the novel Liesel Meminger conspires to numerous acts of stealing. In the film however, our main character is only responsible for what she described as the act of 'borrowing'. This positions the viewer to feel more sympathetic towards the main character for her perceived innocence, especially towards the end of the book when she suffers great loss, and assists the Director in getting a more emotional and heart-breaking response from the viewer. Doing so will in most instances improve the overall quality of the
The theme of the novel, The Book Thief written by Markus Zusak is that there is great power in words and it makes a huge impact on others. As Liesel begins to learn to read, she hungers for words and they are her source of comfort which is why she steals books. Soon she realizes that can be an ugly thing. For example, the way Hitler uses words to encourage the Germans to carry out cruel, violence on innocent people. I chose this theme because I agree on how words can influence people around you.
This devastating, while enlightening novel has a tremendous plot that is skillfully written and played out. In January of 1939, Liesel Meminger’s brother dies and she moves in with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann on Himmel Street. Hans is the first to create a close bond with Liesel when he teaches her how to roll a cigarette and plays the accordion for her when she wakes up from her nightmares about her late brother. Liesel lacks an education and does not know how to read, however Hans teaches her how to read and write, improving her skills. At her brother’s funeral, Liesel steals a book about grave digging, this is the first book she reads and steals.
Out of fear of facing more consequences of her inquisitive mind, Liesel find various methods to distract her mind. After this certain incident, she does not question many things as she is busying herself with reading, stealing, and being with Max and Rudy. This is a good representation of how children acted during the rule of Hitler, proving that the book is able to capture their true lifestyle using experiences of the characters within the novel. To conclude, the author uses the actions of Rudy and Liesel, the purpose of German youth, and fear in questioning as methods of displaying the roles of children accurately. Therefore, the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is able to give a precise insight on the lifestyle of children during the time period of the Nazi
Max, Liesel, and Rudy all change over time and most changes in their characters are negative due to the Nazis forcing to change who they really are. The book “The Book thief” by Markus Zusak is a story about a German girl who’s Mom left her to be adopted and was taken in by Rosa and Hans Hubermann, shortly before the second World War. “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak uses many descriptive words and sensory details in many situations in the book, this creates many dynamic characters.
The Book Thief tells a story of a girl named Liesel, who was adopted by Hans and Rosa Hubermann during World War II. Liesel was quiet but then made friends with other kids on her street. Liesel soon began to learn to read and wanted more books to read so she began to steal them. She made a Jewish friend who she loved to be with, but he soon left their house because he thought they would be better off without him. Liesel wasn 't happy in the end because of what happened to her friends and family during the
‘The book thief had struck for the first time, it is the beginning of an illustrious career’. Liesel’s book stealing in my mind does not qualify as criminality. But the failure/inability to apologize for stealing items, this is the greatest crime. Markus Zusak attends to show us the humanity in everyone, he does this by elaborating on words and sentences creating the theme criminality. Markus successfully uncovers the theme criminality creating a profound effect on the reader while also linking to modern day society.

And to top it off, it is based in the holocaust. In the book thief, Liesel meminger is riding on a train to her adoption parents with her mother and brother, when her brother dies of unknown causes. While at a small makeshift funeral, Liesel takes the gravediggers handbook, and keeps it. She is adopted by Hans and rosa hubermann, Hans is a nice man but his wife rosa is angry personality, but is good hearted and nice on the inside.
Summary of The Book Thief : Liesel Meminger is a young German girl growing up during WWII. She lives with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, outside of Munich, Germany and learns to cope with the loss of a brother and the dreadful nightmares through reading. Reading fills the void her dead brother and her mother left. Books weren't very accepted by society during the war so Liesel stole from the mayor's wife library giving her the name “Book Thief”. Hans is hiding Max, a young Jewish man whose father saved Hans’ life in WWI, in the basement.
My perspective on the brilliant novel The Book Thief is appreciation. The main character, Liesel Meminger ,has a strong passion for words and reading. Liesel's foster family is poor and her foster father teaches her how to read. For liesel to obtain books she steals from a burning ceremony and the Mayor's library. From reading and finishing this novel made me appreciate words and books a lot more.

Markus Zusak was born in Sydney, Australia, on June 23, 1975. He grew up listening to his parents’ stories of their childhoods in Vienna and Munich during World War II. One story his mother often told was about watching a group of Jews being marched down the street on their way to the concentration camp in Dachau. An old man was struggling to keep up with the rest of the group. When a boy ran up to the man and offered him a piece of bread, the man fell to his knees, crying and kissing the boy’s ankles.
Everyone can benefit from the lesson learned in The Book Thief . The Book Thief, directed by Brian Percival, is a film adaptation of a book by Mark Zusak centred around adolescent girl Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nelisse). Percival designs the aural elements in the scenes that make up the film The Book Thief to communicate and allow the audience to explore the power of the human spirit when dealing with adversity. Percival does this by using the aforementioned techniques to create juxtapositions, contrasting the power of the human spirit against adversity.
This year is all about survival. It might not be “The Hunger Games” but there are definitely some similarities. Matric is a game and the prize is observing your face on the front of a newspaper at the end of the final round. So like every other survival challenge, you will need a survival kit. Mine is filled with “The Book Thief“ wound ointment, “The Hunger Games” band-aid and if it comes down to it: “Tuesdays with Morrie” revival injection The best survival kit around.
