“I don’t know why I did it. I was just so sad. I don’t know why” (276). In The Burn Journals by Brent Runyon, Brent tells the story of his heat of the moment decision to attempt suicide at the age of 14 years old. His brother, Craig, is the first to discover him engulfed in smoke after Brent douses himself with gasoline and lights a match. Brent’s mental illness brings severe trauma to himself and his family, and they each attempt to cope with the stress and guilt from the situation in different ways such as suppressing their feelings, caring for each other, placing blame, and distracting him/herself from the event. Mr. and Mrs. Runyon both suppress their feelings in order to put their focus on helping Brent recover. When Brent first wakes up in the hospital, his dad is by his side. “I ask him if he ever wanted to kill himself, and he says that he must have once, a long time ago, and I feel better because even if he’s lying, then it’s nice of him” (38). Mr. Runyon tries to make Brent feel as normal as possible with his answer, in order to help Brent heal psychologically. The character of Brent Runyon parallels Thorfinn from Vinland Saga, in themes of regret and depression. In Burn Journals, Brent sets himself on fire, avoiding problems in his life, quote (I bring it closer to my face, and it all goes up.) This great decision made on a whim shows the dramatic state Brent is in.
When Brent was younger, he was in advanced programs and did well in school. After a couple of years, he started slacking off and ultimately asked his parents if he could leave the program; they agreed. This decision resulted in a downward spiral, consisting of: Brent attempting to kill himself many times, failing most, if not all of his classes, and he also succeeded in hurting himself by setting a gasoline soaked robe on fire while wearing it. Overall, my favorite parts of Burn Journals by Brent Runyon are the detail in the book, the fact that it’s a true story, and how he wrote about a tough/real topic.
The novel ‘The Running Man’ written by Michael Geared Bauer emphasizes the concept that people have baggage. The main characters exhibited in the novel ‘Tom Leyton, Mrs. Mossop and Simon Davidson’ gradually reveal their baggage throughout the course of the novel. At the beginning of the narrative all three of the characters were individually negatively labeled by the citizens of the neighborhood. However by the end of the narrative we discover who the characters truly are and revel their personalities that have been affected by the baggage they carry. Tom Leyton is a prominent example of the concept that people have baggage and sometimes it becomes who they are.

The human condition is full of paradoxes and double meanings. We can commit the most shocking and terrible acts, but we can complete the most virtuous and honorable feats. Ishmael Beah describes the appalling and violent behavior he and other children exhibited toward the human life during his time in the Sierra Leonean civil war in his memoir, A Long Way Gone. Beah also details the forgiveness and kindness of complete strangers that helped him become the man that fate meant him to be. Homo sapiens are complex creatures brimming with irony and surprises.

Literary Analysis Suspense. It's what makes us sit on the edge of our seats at movies, or has us biting our nails as we read. It’s the backbone behind any classic horror film where the babysitter keeps getting unknown phone calls about checking the children and she asks the police to trace the call only to get a call back saying it's coming from upstairs.

In society, when citizens are denied an education, they become unable to think for themselves, and as a result do not question authority. Therefore, in history, when several leaders "burned books," they were attempting to take away the peoples ' ability to study and question the ideas and decisions of those with authority. It is important to question the ideas and commands of people in positions of authority because they may be taking away the peoples ' rights. For example, in the Qin Dynasty, Emperor Qinglong created a program, the Siku Quanshu, where citizens gave books to be included into an official library. However, another side of the program was introduced where "evil" books were banned and burned.
