Usually, the general audience will not notice a speaker or an author's use of rhetoric. Rhetorical appeal has three forms: logos, pathos, and ethos, and each of them are meant to persuade an audience. As written in "An Overview of Rhetoric," "Rhetorical discourse if usually intended to influence an audience to accept an idea..." Pathos, logos, and ethos are quite common in everyday life, from books to speeches and commercials. Logos makes the audience think logically about the argument presented. Ethos makes the audience think about his or her morals and ethics, and pathos influences an audience's feelings.

For several years, the law has treated corporations as metaphysical persons. This means that the law regards corporations as persons, but only for certain legal purposes. For example, corporations have some of the same rights as natural people do, such as the right to freedom of speech. Corporate personhood has evolved into a highly controversial topic since it was first established in the famous supreme court case, Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad. This was a case where the Southern Pacific Railroad protested taxes placed on it by several counties in California.

For hundreds of years African Americans have faced racial discrimination in the United States. Over and over again contracts were made that gave them hope of equality such as the Emancipation Proclamation, the 14th and 15th amendment, and the end of the separate but equal law. However, they were continuously refused the basic rights that they were promised and were still forcefully separated from whites. Racist police and white supremacists evoked fear in African American men and women who attempted to participate in the rights they were entitled to. Then, in the 1950s and 60s there was a spark of interminable protesting of the clear racial injustices that the African American people faced, this time was known as the Civil Rights Movement.

A Time to Kill is a remembered experience that brings up the question, “Is a father justified to kill the young men who raped his daughter?” There are many fallacies used throughout this trial, such as, Appeals to Trial, Ad Hominem, Authoritative Warrant, Hasty Generalization, Claim of Fact and many others. The trial also used Ethos, Pathos and Logos to get its point across. If there were no fallacies, ethos, pathos or logos used, then the trial wouldn’t have been as strong as it was illustrated to be in the movie.

Certain modern corporations are "monsters trying to devour as much profit as possible,” these are known as bad apples. The system of corporations has developed throughout history to the point where it is at today. When corporations first started, they only thought of how to help the public good instead of thinking only of the profit the owners could pocket. During the Civil War, corporations grew and evolved in a way that would lay the base out for the way modern corporations go about business. Corporations used the Civil War era to gain more freedoms and rights for themselves.

This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace.” Those are the inspiring words of president George W. Bush in his 9/11 address after the horrific terrorist attacks on the American citizens. The address was given on 9/11/01, and Bush was assuring the American people that something is being done about the attacks and that they were not left unnoticed. Bush’s address was highly effective even though it relied predominantly on the aid of ethos and pathos, and logos was primarily overlooked.

During the trial in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Atticus uses the three forms rhetoric to defend Tom Robinson, Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. One of the major points Atticus uses demonstrates the first form of rhetoric, Ethos. At the ending of Atticus’ closing statement, he says, “I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have heard, come to a decision, and restore the defendant to his family. In the name of God, do your duty” (Lee, 4). This statement demonstrates Ethos because he is appealing to the jury’s moral code, and their personal code of conduct.

The automotive industry uses advertisements and hundreds of types of persuasive techniques to sell you their vehicles. In the Ford advertisement that I chose, a large red truck is driving down the road during a rain storm. The words “It’s simple. BURN LESS FUEL. Burn less cash.”

In 2005 Steve Jobs was asked to give a commencement speech to the graduating students at Stanford university. Steve Jobs, a tech millionaire, got his start as the co-founder of Apple, one of the most influential tech companies around today. Him and his friend, Steve Wozniak, started the company out of their garage, little did they know that it would turn into the multi international company we know today, relied on by millions. Due to all of his experience and success at overcoming hardships, Steve Jobs was the perfect person to ask when Stanford was looking for their speaker in 2005. His speech is full of timeless, relatable stories and experiences that support the life advice he is giving to these students.

The ad also used patriotic colors as a color scheme, to subconsciously have an emotional patriotic appeal, the ad also includes a slogan. The Purpose of this ad is to get people buy lamb and goat meat locally and from idehlacres, rather than purchasing it from the store.

Having the prop will help your number two come out easier.

The picture I chose, shows an image that is in the public eye of today’s society, the image of smoking and how people can be affected by it. In this picture, viewers can see how smoking can really affect one’s life and how the addiction can be harmful to not only the outside of the body, but also the inside. This photo shows a controversial side of the appeal that people become addicted to cigarettes and, even after trying to go cold turkey, some people still cannot get over the addiction. The first thing that is noticed is the noose. The noose is being wrapped around the woman’s neck comparing the cigarette to the noose in attempt to show death.

A transnational corporation is a very powerful actor with a significant foreign direct investment and physical operations in two or more countries. While these corporations have always existed in the world economy, they have become even larger over the past few decades, leaving many to wonder if they are gaining too much power. As with any powerful entity, people have begun to ponder whether these corporations are villains or heroes in the world economy. For some like consumers, companies, and host-country/world economies, the global corporations are heroes. While for others, like workers in poor countries, the environment, and local businesses, they are villains.
