The Crucible had many times where the Character's were conflicted on what they should actually do. One instance of this is Act 4 with John Proctor. John Proctor was a man that performed adultery, which sparked this whole case of events to spark. His wife from the very beginning is very conflicted in whether she should forgive her husband for the sin he has committed. When Elizabeth is ordered to court the rage within Mr.Proctor arose and he exclaimed many things thought to be shameful by the people of Salem.

The Crucible was based in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. The book starts off with Reverend Parris finding the girls in the woods dancing. Upon finding them Betty Reverend Parris’s daughter and some of the girls become ill. Abigail Reverend Parris’s niece tells him that when he found them in the wood Betty was so frightened when Parris found her she fainted and won’t wake. With Betty and the other girls unable to wake rumors of witchcraft start around the community.

Breeze desperately wants to solve this murder case and he will do anything to place the blame on someone. One night, Breeze and his partner, Spangler, decide to give Marlowe a visit. Although Marlowe does not invite them into his apartment, they come in anyways and start snooping around. They have no warrant and could get in a lot of trouble if they get caught. The atmosphere of this scene may be uncomfortable, but Marlowe finds a way to add a humorous tone to the situation by giving both on duty officers a drink.

This is what many people in the town of Salem had to go through during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. People's motives such as: gaining and maintaining power, and aspirations for what other people had caused them to make irrational, and atrocious decisions. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, desire and power drive characters to create chaos in the community.

In the play along with the movie The Crucible, John Proctor and Abigail Williams have interesting relationship bound by adultery and lies. Abigail becomes obsessed with John and will do anything to be with him. John quickly shuts down her fantasy ideas and tells her that what happened between them was a one-time thing that will never take place again and a mistake on his part. With this knowledge, she soon spends all her time plotting to get John all to herself and to make him fall in love with her, even if that means taking out John’s wife, Elizabeth. We see many examples of this forbidden relationship through their secret encounters and arguments in both examples of the story, still, there were more scenes of John and Abby alone in the movie than in the play.

Judge Danforth’s unwavering egotism culminates in the unfortunate deaths of Salem townsfolk. Often times people try to think of what is right instead of saving their own face, Judge Danforth is an exception to this stereotype. The Salem Witch Trials were a horrible time where many people lost their lives due to an unjust court system.

The Crucible also known as the Salem witch trials and the duke lacrosse case were both a turning point in history for America. Both of the events harmed many people in a number of ways. Although the crucible was a lot harsher, they both compare and differentiate in a plethora of ways. For example, they compare because of the lack of evidence used and the false accusations told upon the people. They contrast because of the way the accusers were treated at the end of it, and because of all the lies told.
