Arthur Miller's play The Crucible demonstrates the craziness that occurred in Salem in 1692. Althoughthe play is fiction, Miller based the plot of his play on verifiable occasions and his characters demonstrate how suspicion and dread can raise. Various characters utilized this dread to profit and they showedselfishness and wrongdoing. The two most wretched characters in the play were Rev. Parris and JudgeDanforth. Abigail Reverend Parris’s niece tells him that when he found them in the wood Betty was so frightened when Parris found her she fainted and won’t wake. With Betty and the other girls unable to wake rumors of witchcraft start around the community.

Moreover, as the trials progress Hale is starting to be increasingly appalled by the injustice and cruelty he witnesses. He starts to doubt the reliability of the trials and the evidence that is being used to support the accusations. He begins to see that there might be more going on than originally observed. In addition, as stated by Arthur Miller, Hale said, “Proctor, I cannot think god be provoked so grandly by such a petty cause…think of your village and what may have drawn from heaven such thundering wrath upon you all” (Miller, 75). This proves that Hale is starting to question the validity of the trials, and doubting the intensity of the punishment being handed out to the people.

Hale took witchcraft very seriously, he believed there was actually something going on in salem. Next, Hale is determined to get to the bottom of what is going on. When Hale enters the Parris’ house, Parris, minister of Salem, insisted to carrying the books. After Parris carries the book he mentioned that the books were heavy.

Knowing all of this, Hale becomes desperate to have Elizabeth save her husband and even wishes for him to sin in order to continue living as a role model for the people of Salem.
