What is a tragic hero? The most well know definition is a good person who makes a (stupid) mistake that leads to his/her tragic downfall. A perfect example of this comes from Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible. We see this through the one of the characters who got trapped in his own conscience about whether or not to save his name from being spread all over Salem. In the play, a farmer, John Proctor is committed for witchery (which he never did) by Abigail, a girl who he had an affair with. Since he refuses to tell the court that Abigail was lying just to get Proctor to herself, he is later hanged for wanting to save his name from church doors and the rest of the town of Salem. This is an example of Proctor wanting to save his pride/reputation. Both of these examples are what caused proctor to his death/downfall.

His wife asked him to go to court and tell the court that Abby and the other girls were just acting out, but he refused to do so. He said “… Know I cannot keep it. I say I will think on it…” (Act 2, page 53). Nonetheless, when Elizabeth is arrested, John has to choose between his wife or his pride.

It is enough!”. Without signing the document he was set to hang again. Instead of confessing and letting this madness continue he was able to plant seeds of doubt in the minds of the villagers, causing the trials to come to an end. The way death came and the way he died is the reason John Proctor is a tragic hero.
John Proctor was noble farmer, thrown in jail over accusations of witchcraft and held the importance of his name over his life. Proctor was not as noble as he was conceived to be by the other people in Salem because he had previously committed adultery with a young girl named Abigail Williams. Abigail’s love for Proctor pioneered the development of the witch trials seeing that she practiced witchcraft only to kill Proctor’s wife and then began accusing others to save herself. Proctor saw through her manipulative lies and stood against her accusations to right his wrong and stop Abigail. His dignity led to his demise once given the option to admit to witchcraft, and live without his good name or be hanged, Proctor chose death.
Proctor finds redemption here because he is willing to die for his beliefs rather than lie to save his life. By choosing death, he is making the ultimate sacrifice to save his reputation. John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better.
He cared greatly about his family and wife even though Elizabeth was often distant towards him. Hero: A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities; however, heroism is not synonymous with perfection. Man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. This is apparent in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, a story about the Salem Witch Trials in which Abigail Williams accuses dozens of innocent people of witchcraft. Despite being flawed, John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Elizabeth Proctor can demonstrate their heroism in The Crucible. John Proctor is shown to be both a hero and a flawed man in regards to his lechery.
John Proctor's main flaw was his excessive pride which sealed his fate. I myself felt his death transformed Salem’s ways of thinking and increased their own knowledge. Proctor's life completely started going downhill when Abigail accused John’s loved ones who then were sent to jail, or executed. John Proctor was a man of goodness and pride which cleansed his soul after he suffered a tragic death, and became a symbol of purity and greatness for others to

Macbeth is a tragic hero because he starts by being loyal and trustworthy, develops a tragic flaw that leads to his downfall, and he redeems a small measure of himself before he dies.
