The Demise of Macbeth
What does it mean to be a leader? Being a leader entails being a fearless individual who devotes their time to helping the greater good. To Macbeth, being a leader meant getting as much power as possible. Macbeth is a play written by William Shakespearethat tells the story of a naive soldier who let his chance at power corrupt him and eventually got killed because of it. Macbeth was not a righteous leader as he let power corrupt his thoughts and decisions; he killed his friends who honored him which ultimately lead him to insanity and resulted in his demise.
Macbeth let the negative influence of the three witches lead him to believe he would be King. The only problem Macbeth faced was that there was already a man in that position. He took matters into his own hands and arranged King Duncan to be killed. King Duncan was a man who respected Macbeth and promised him great things. This is Macbeth’s first grab at power. Macbeth decides the only way to prevent this was by murdering Banquo in hopes of keeping the crown he was unworthy of. Macbeth betrayed his closest ally under the influence of Lady Macbeth because he put his pride over his loyalty. Lady MacBath says and Macbeth starts to question his worth as a man and a leader. The presence of Banquo's ghost is a clear representation of Macbeth's superego, reminding him of the ethical norms he has violated in his pursuit of power. When Banquo’s ghost returns Macbeth states “Avaunt! and quit my sight! Let the earth hide/thee!” (Shakespeare 3.4 94) As soon as he saw Banquo again he screams out of anger deflecting his guilt with madness.

At the start of the play, Macbeth is well respected among King Duncan’s army. He encounters three witches who give him a prophecy that he will become king. At first, Macbeth believes that fate and the natural order will lead him to become king, and he doesn’t have to do anything. Macbeth’s wife convinces him to kill King Duncan, which he eventually proceeds to do. Macbeth continues to commit murders to maintain his power, and he thinks there is no going back.
Macbeth had become everything that he had ever wanted to be which was the king of Scotland and when the witches told him that someone else was going to take his crown he went to extremes to try to keep them from doing that which was eventually what lead to him dying. The witches had told Macbeth that the sons of Banquo would take his crown so he decided to have Banquo and his son killed Macbeth said, “Our fears in Banquo stick deep/ And in his royalty of nature reigns that which would be feared”(3.1.49-51). Macbeth did everything he could to protect his crown, but that is eventually what lead to his downfall and his death. He killed his best friend Banquo which was when his ambition had gone to far and was the beginning of his decline.
He does not want to be a loyal servant to the king, but rather be the king with loyal servants to serve him. And because of these ambitious thoughts lurking in his mind, he must ask the “Stars, hide your fires; / Let not light see my black and deep desires” (1.4.52-53). So that no one can see through his wall of false appearance and discern his true deepest desires. Hence, Macbeth appeared to be an honorable and exemplary candidate for the role that king Duncan bestows upon him, but in reality he is only dishonorable for he has notion of regicide to become king himself and must appears to be loyal to a king “whose murder yet is but fantastical” (1.3.139). Also, Lady Macbeth hides herself behind the wall of her false appearance which makes her seem as if she is the greatest of hostess, but in reality she too has “black and deep desires” (1.4.52-53), to kill king
Many people make big mistakes while under bad influence in power. Some become corrupt, some cave into the pressure, and some just straight up ignore their problems and run away. Macbeth on one hand caved under pressure and killed a man's family in fear of losing the throne and on the other hand completely corrupted himself to become king. People are probably wondering what possibly could have caused him to go mad. The answer is clear.
Macbeth shows that he is willing to kill King Duncan because he is interested in the witches prophecy, after they tell him that he will become ‘Thane of Cawdor’ and then the King.
A leader: someone who holds the power to influence people and situations into opportunities for success. However, it is that same power that can cause uprising and corruption. Within William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, this idea is expressed. Throughout the play, Shakespeare writes about a King who has lost his humanity, three witches messing with fate, and a Prince, who was once in hiding, finally winning back his title. All of these embody the relationship of leader and follower; showing the consequences of misdeeds, and the successes gained from stability.

The downfall in the life of Macbeth is all his own fault despite the influence from Lady Macbeth and the three witches. As shown at the start of the play, Macbeth is a courageous warrior who won the battle for Scotland. With the impact of the three witches, Macbeth was fallen into deep, dark thoughts. Macbeth led himself to the downfall of his life. He was the hero, who fought in the war between Scotland and Norwegians and gain victory but eventually turned into a tragic hero.
Macbeth is also a power hungry man who would do just about anything to achieve his goal of becoming King. When Macbeth first hears the prophecies from the three witches he instantly became invested with the journey to become king. Similar to Lady Macbeth, nothing was going to come between him and his potential power, “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man. That function is smother'd in surmise, and nothing is but what is not” (1.3.52-55). This quote exemplifies how Macbeth’s initial solution to becoming king was murder.
