Everyone desires happiness. How can we all obtain this? By being compassionate, we all have to be more self-less and show more compassion for others. What is compassion? Compassion is someone showing caring feelings or sympathy for others. This world is built on war and hate. By reading The Ethic of Compassion, I realized that the world would be a happier place if everyone put their self-desires aside and paid more attention to others sufferings. As humans we naturally have feelings of partiality. As the Dalai Lama says in the text, “most people, when they see someone who is handicapped feel sympathetic toward that person. But then when they see others who are wealthier, or better educated, or better placed socially, they immediately feel envious and competitive toward them” (733). These negative feelings prevent us from seeing the positive in people and we put them in a “snob” category, without even speaking to these people. This blinds us from the fact that just like us, whether rich or poor, educated or …show more content…
The Dalai Lama says “not only is it relevant to be compassionate in the professional life, but when compassion is lacking, our activities are in danger of becoming destructive” (734). This happens because we think that if our bosses or people superior to us tell us to do something it is okay, regardless of how it affects the community around us. If truly strive for compassion, then take a step back from any situation including the workplace and see how your decision will affect others. If you see that your decision will wrongfully affect others, then let your compassion take over and disengage yourself from the situation. The Dalai Lama states that “the ethic of compassion helps provide the necessary foundation of motivation for both restrain and the cultivation of virtue” (734-735). This meaning that compassion opens our eyes to what needs to be stopped from happening, and helps us strive for what is
Looks are deceiving when it comes to appearance versus reality. Things are not always as they appear to be in real life. To many human beings, wealth can be mistaken as happiness and happiness can be mistaken as wealth. People become obsessed with the idea that along with wealth brings carefree happiness. However, ironically this can lead to ones failure.
The capacity to learn is a construct familiar to all animals and some plants, so what makes us so special? There is an advantage to trees being tall and supported by rigid and woody vascular systems. The advantage is simply that most plants grow towards the sunlight to ensure a constant rate of photosynthesis by avoiding obstruction. The tallest tree in the forest never gets outshined, or rather out shadowed, by other trees. Thus, over millions of years natural selection has allowed for coniferous trees to reach heights up to fifty feet, since most of the areas that they inhabit tend to be low on the ultra violet index.

People need our compassion for more thaan they need our judgement. It is during the worst time of our lifes that you will get to see the true colors of the people who say that care of you. The most meaningful or should I say the reading that intrigued me the most in part one is that of Compassion written by The Dalai Lama. The statement “I think that every human being has an innate sense of “I” (The Dalai Lama.p.83) is what peaked an interest for me, I interpreted that to mean that at some point of time in life everyone thinks of themselves. People may naturally have a desire to seek happiness, obtaining a sense of peace that will make them happy within life. He goes on to say the fact that human beings are intelligent can in some ways hinder their happiness.

In Barbara Lazear Ascher's essay “On Compassion”, she describes various situations she's observed in New York City to imply that “compassion is not a character trait like a sunny disposition. It must be learned… adversity that becomes so familiar that we begin to identify and empathize it.” While observing these two scenes, Ascher expresses her admiration towards the curiosity behind compassion by availing pathos, use of questioning and variant figurative language to illustrate the encounters. Combine these two sentences. Through the use of pathos, Ascher exemplifies a description of the homeless as dressed unwell, unhygienic, filthy, and acrid.
, “I just wanted to see how it feels like when someone like you looks at someone like me”. These two lines portray how social class inequality is a very common issue that runs in the American society as well as worldwide. And a disabled person’s ambition is like all other human beings, the looks of pity and compassion negatively affect that ambition. People should embrace the disabled person and give them a helping hand, and they should have laws, which defend their rights, which should be respected. However, most societies do not have laws that ensure an equal life for the disabled population. It is a shame that the rights of the disabled people has turned many times to mere slogans.
