Roger Brooke Taney made history in the 1857 Dred Scott Case by ruling that black slaves were not citizens of the United States. This controversial historical figure died on October 12, 1864, in Washington, D.C. Roger Taney played a vital role with the tension between the north and the south based on the decision he made with the Dread Scott case. Because of Taney’s decision, he led many conflicts such as the free or slave black person, the Missouri Compromise, and lastly the conflict between the north and the south idea on slavery. Taney believed that blacks could not be considered Citizens in the United States because of their race. Dred Scott Vs SandFord The case, Dred Scott vs Sandford, (1857) better known as the Dred Scott case was a crucial decision that affected America and it’s black population. Free blacks in America weren’t able to sue the court. The concept of popular sovereignty was also questioned, and blacks with ancestors were imported to America was slave could no longer become citizens. The Case ruled that slaves in free countries are still slaves.

During the early-to-mid 1800s, the North and South had begun to seriously argue on the issue of slavery. While the South were in favor of keeping slavery, the North could not wait to be rid of it. The decision of the Dred Scott case would be known as an important event which would spark the friction between the North and South to rise drastically. Dred Scott, an African American slave, sued for his freedom because he had lived in a free state for most of his time in the United States. In the ruling at Supreme Court, Chief Justice Taney had ruled that because he was an African American slave, Dred Scott could not sue for the reason that Scott was not a citizen and that he was property.

Sandford decision was also a considerable factor in the vents leading up to the Civil War. In fact, there is reason to believe the landmark decision of the case made the Civil War inevitable. The basis for the case revolved around Dred Scott and his owner taking him to “live for several years in Illinois, a free state,” where they would eventually return to Missouri, a slave state. Dred Scott sued for his freedom on the basis that due to his residence being in a free state, he would be considered a free man along with his wife. In a 7 to 2 ruling, the Supreme Court found that Dred Scott would still be a slave despite his owner taking him to a free territory.

The Dred Scott Decision & History Dred Scott was a African American born in 1795 (1800) to a slave family, in Southampton County, Virginia. Dred Scott was owned by Peter Blow and his family who later moved to Alabama then to Missouri. In the year 1832 Peter passed away Scott was then bought by an army surgeon Dr. John Emerson. In 1836 Scott fell in love with Harriet Robinson, Dr. Emerson bought her and they soon were wed. Soon after Emerson took both slaves and his family with him to the states of Illinois and Wisconsin both of which were free states at the time. John Emerson most likely didn't see this to be an issue since he did not consider himself to live in the state, only to be stationed there.

Within the United States supreme court, seven out of the nine judges either supported slavery or had owned slaves previously, so Dred Scott was entering a biased and unfair trial to begin with. On March 6, 1857, The decision for the Dred Scott v. Sanford case was heard by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, who stated that slaves were not citizens of the United States, and "... They had no rights which the white man was bound to respect". ( Cite Source) He also explained how Scott was never free when he lived in the free territories and that congress was prohibited to have any ruling over slavery, which made the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional .

Thus, all states had no right to secede from the Union. However, the South believed it could be broken under certain circumstances, which would give them the right to secede, (Document F). More tension arose when the Taney court released the ruling over the Dred Scott. Taney shared his belief that property, which included slaves, could not be withheld anywhere in the country. He ruled that slavery was legal throughout the land of the United States.

Prior to this decision, Dred was enslaved in Alabama, then was brought to Missouri. From there, he was sold to John Emerson, who brought him to Wisconsin territory. Soon after, he was brought back to Missouri. Once in Missouri, Dred Scott, and his wife Harriet filed for their freedom in Missouri court. Eleven years later, Chief Justice Roger Taney denied Scott in Washington D.C. due to three rulings; African-Americans had no rights in federal court, Slave states no longer had to follow the doctrine “Once free, Always free”, Congress should never have banned slavery in any territories.

This man stated that no African American could ever enjoy the rights of a U.S. citizen, thus not being able to sue. He also said that the federal government had no authority to limit the expansion of slavery, declaring that the Missouri Compromise of 1820 unconstitutional. In all, the Dred Scott Decision infuriated abolitionists and Republicans, because they wanted to prevent the expansion of slavery in the West. They also feared that slavery would spread. This

This decision would become known as the Dred Scott Decision and it came at a time in America when race was a very controversial subject. There were many causes to make this case to form and there were also many effects on America that this case brought with it. It caused uproar in the United States and caused many issues to be raised between slaves and whites. There were many causes leading up to the Dred Scott Decision, which included slaves not being treated fairly within the law, and how slaves were being used for labor and many other dirty things that the whites did not want to

In addition, the historical neglect of slavery is used as a tool in for white supremacy. Through ignorance, Americans show a common theme of showing pride in their heritage of the Confederacy and fail to see the bigger picture of it. They buy and wear merchandise such as flags, shirts, hoodies, hats, etc… proudly, with the incomprehension of the damage it is doing. We have failed to properly display the Confederacy as the villain, or even to show that the preservation of slavery was the reason for the Confederacy to secede from the Union in the first place. Where slavery has mostly been condemned, the defenders in history have not been condemned but instead have their actions be viewed as a part of American history.

Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. The foundation of America is freedom. Freedom from Britain. However, the freedom is limited to white males who own property. When colonists started to immigrate to America, they wanted to escape from under the rule of Britain.

The people who watched oppression rose to the test advanced by the Abolitionists. The shields of subjection included monetary viewpoints, history, religion, authenticity, social extraordinary, and even charity, to propel their disputes. Shields of enslavement battled that the sudden end to the slave economy would have had a noteworthy and executing money related impact in the South where reliance on slave work was the foundation of their economy. The cotton economy would fold. The tobacco yield would dry in the fields.

First, there is the impact on the populations of areas to which the slaves came. Slavery has changed the demographic face of these areas. Some countries, like Haiti and Jamaica, have populations mostly descended from Africans. Others, like Brazil and the US, have populations with large minorities of people of African descent.
