Steven Sternberg Mrs. Burns English 1 CP 1 March, 2018 The Flag Protest “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color” (Kaepernick, Colin). The flag protest has been a protest existing for a long time but, recently sparked lots of controversy. Although kneeling during the national anthem may seem disrespectful are often seen as a disrespect to the flag and troops, a inefficient way to promote a cause, and anger many people in shows division in the country, it can show that the ideals of freedom is justified, it generates conversation and awareness about topic, and is a legal form of peaceful protest. “During a medal ceremony at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, two African-American track athletes made what would become one of the most famous political protests” (Araki, Zachary). These protest show that the legal system is unfair to African American citizens. The only way to stop these is to protest what is wrong in America and how it can be fixed. Kneeling during the national anthem is just another way to protest that the justice system is wrong. Not only does it show the wrongs but it raises awareness about the topic. The flag protest generates conversation and awareness about topic. "In a situation like that, people are seeing it. We can report it”(“If there’s protest, NBC…”). This shows that if NFL players are doing controversial things that news outlets will report it. This causes awareness to why they’re kneeling during the national anthem. These news outlets give NFL players a voice and a way to speak their mind. When famous people are given largely viewed outlets they are able to spread awareness. Going on the NFL players aren’t only spreading awareness but they’re also doing it
Several National Football League players have been trying to send a message to the public with their actions during the national anthem. Some fans are obsessing about whether players should take a knee, raise a fist or lock arms during the national anthem before games. However, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman said they should be talking about the reasons why players are protesting. It is because the recent news stories of police officers killing unarmed African- American people. Sherman says Americans should focus on the message being sent with this protesting.
The article “How did the different networks handle Trump’s comments during NFL Sunday?” by Richard Deitsch shows a great job of showing each news report point of view. It showed tons of information about the players reactions and also the news reporter's reaction too. ESPN aired it by trying to have the main points covered for the nation, and it lasted an hour to figure out the plan of airing it. It is arduous to try and pick the perfect points from the individual's reaction to Trump’s comments. ESPN almost showed everything that had happened.
And you clearly don’t understand the people who make you stars and make you rich (McLaughlin 1). Point out the NFL players disrespect our country, he protest against them. Meanwhile, McLaughlin explain they like football and make the NFL players to be the famous and rich people. Regardless not NFL players don’t know the country and god are the most important things in the author life. That’s why McLaughlin wants to protest NFL player, and he suggests the people try to do the same.
Also the protests in cities of Black Lives Matter. The Declaration of Independence states that “all men are created equal”. Though some people in the NFL don’t think the same way. So they decide to kneel during the National Anthem.
A controversial topic currently circulating throughout the media and society, is professional athletes kneeling during the National Anthem. In my opinion, this is a completely useless, unnecessary action done just for attention. The theory behind the action is supposed to represent unity. Unity is not achieved by causing controversy, but it’s achieved by coming together and supporting each other when times get tough.
The NFL football players are not disrespecting the flag, they are raising awareness.
Many NFL players have started taking a knee during the National Anthem before their games as a way of protesting. Some teams haven’t even come out onto the field during the anthem. These protests were started and lead by former pro quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The players are protesting mostly because of social and racial issues, they aren’t proud of a country that doesn’t treat people of color fairly.
The current debate over kneeling or sitting in protest during the National anthem ignited by Colin Kaepernick in 2016 has escalated to become a nationally divisive issue. Colin Kaepernick, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers refuse to stand during “the Star Spangled Banner” Aug. 2016, to protest against racial injustice and police brutality in the United States. These athletics that chose not to stand for the national anthem because there was a message they wanted to send. Needless to say, an individual has a right to believe as they so choose. Kaepernick along with many others feel that not standing for the national anthem is a peaceful way to protest and release their feelings.
When a flag is presented in a rival that brings hate and discontent to America it should be removed from being displayed. I strongly am offended of the Confederate flag and my opinion is a lot of others are also offended. The constant reminder of the mistreatment and enslavement of the black race is still being suffered by black people today. The confederate flag brings grief to my heart as my ancestors were subjected to slavery.
The debate over whether or not kneeling during the National Anthem is a very interesting topic to me, due to the debates/opinions I have heard outside of the classroom. While I admit I stand with a little bias against Heather Mac Donald after googling that she was a conservative before reading her article on police shootings, I still have to say I believe Charles M. Blow had the better message. In our discussion in class, it was baffling to see that it took 10 minutes for someone to note the real reason why these NFL Players were kneeling, but instead everyone talked about how much it disrespected the flag, which in my personal opinion it isn’t disrespectful with the original intention. The stretching or not even being on the field for the
Kneeling during the national anthem is a form of peacefully protesting instead of choosing to stay silent and not have a voice. Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick who is currently a free agent brought the attention to “kneeling during the national anthem” when he decided to take a knee during a preseason game. Him kneeling brought an uproar of people who believed he was being “disrespectful” and “unpatriotic”, others believed he was being “brave” and a “hero”. Kaepernick had a reason for doing so, he was standing up for social justice and police brutality again African Americans. Significance of The Flag
Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback of the San-Francisco 49ers, chose not to stand for the National Anthem at a recent National Football League game. Instead, he decided to express his unhappiness with the way African Americans are being treated by police, by kneeling to the ground. This was his form of protest and attempt to convey his message about how he felt. Kaepernick does have the right to not stand for the National Anthem, however, it is disrespectful. People fight for our freedom, so why disrespect those men and women and an NFL game was not the right time or place to hold his protest.
Holly Pryle Emily Chappell English 121 22 March 2018 Kneeling for the Anthem Every American child is raised with the knowledge that they were born in a country that by law gives them freedom of self-expression and the right to protest. However, this right does not mean that people must agree with you and in many cases, groups wind up at odds over differing opinions. Over the past few years America has seen many examples of this, most notably football players protesting injustice by kneeling during the anthem.
Freedom. The importance of freedom is often forgotten as Americans live day by day taking this gift for granted. In this day and age, freedom seems as a “simple gift’ obtained by every American, but one forgets to think about those who were once unable to enjoy the freedoms one is promised daily. Back in the day, freedom seemed as nothing more than a dream to those of color. Everyday of a colored person’s life consisted of harassment and discrimination as no one cared to treat them as equals.
This action caused an upset among students. Some students are in conflict on how to feel with the demonstration. People should not be disrespecting the flag for any
