Upton Sinclair displays his dexterous writing ability in one of his most widely familiar books “The Jungle”. Throughout this unique masterpiece Sinclair broadcast multiple conditions which one today would not know to judge from its content as a horror or jest. He goes about this by storytelling the life of an immigrant family. These conditions vary from poor living setups to the stomach turning health violations undertook by the meat industry. Overall imposing his theory that the heavily sold illusion of the american dream wasn’t at all what it was made out to be.

He states, “The demise of the Rudkus family, she[Louise Carroll Wade] argues, is far-fetched , given the statistically improbable series of disasters that befall it within a few years’ time” (3). Wade, a social historian, uses reasoning to support her idea that all these events that happen to the Rudkus family are highly unlikely. This makes the reader skeptical about the reality of this book and have sympathy for the Rudkus family. Phelps uses Wade’s point to further express the reasoning behind the Rudkus family’s misfortunes, “we consider Jurgis a literary personification of the whole immigrant working class” (3). This relates to the previous quote saying how all these horrible and unfortunate events happen only to the Rudkus family because they represent all the working class families and the difficulties they faced.

Adapting to a Cruel World The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a perfect example of man vs. society. The brutal labor and poverty defines the harsh reality of this 1906 novel. While exploring this cruel society, Jurgis Rudkus, the protagonist, faces many hardships and becomes an acknowledgeable person. This is evident when Jurgis involves himself with barbaric working conditions, his vulnerable family, and socialist beliefs.

In the book The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, the main characters are Jurgis, Elzbieta, Marija, little Stanislovas, Ona, old Antanas and baby Antanas. Throughout the book, there is a constant theme of destruction due to the family moving to America from Lithuania. This shaped their fate, actions, and characteristics. The family was trapped in the American Jungle having no control in what happened to them and demolished their lives; history repeating itself. Historical events prove the suffering America brings.

Later in her pregnancy she becomes very ill. Soon after, she dies along with her baby. Suddenly Jurgis comes into realization with what is happening. Matthew Morris writes, “Jurgis comes to see and comprehend the class system that has destroyed everyone he cared about, and to join the fight to change that system” that has made him lose his job and lead to his wife’s death (5). Jurgis decides to join a rebellion to protest the mistreatment of immigrants.

According to Savali, the community found a source of water (a well) but soon after find that the well ran dry and some say that it is too contaminated to drink from. The well was deemed too contaminated to drink back to the early 1980’s. Officials say, “that a bacterium that stems from hogs and livestock”, is the reason why the communities water is contaminated (Savali 2016). This left the community devastated because they are not able to access any usable water. In efforts to try and save the people from being forced out, with the help of people from all around Dallas, the community has a plan to clean up Sand Branch and give them a source of running water but in their attempts the city keeps postponing it.

He used the story of a Lithuanian immigrant, Jurgis Rudkus, to show the harsh situation that immigrants had to face in the United States, the unsanitary and unsafe working conditions in the meatpacking plants, as well as the tension between the capitalism and socialism in the United States during the early 1900s. In chapter 14 the family by now knows the secrets of the meat packing industry. They cant speak out because they are afraid to lose their job. Jurgis starts to drink heavily now but it isn’t going to help. Jurgis’s son is going through some tough times just turning one year he is already suffering illnesses. Moving through the chapter I find out Ona is pregnant again; which is strange because they just had one about a year ago.

Which is where he asked most of his questions, as a journalist. One of the questions applied to how the social class affects their structure at work. An immigrant, low social class background for a character named Jurgis demonstrates how inequitable life can be in the early 1900s.

Then the family settled in Packingtown, which was the central place for Lithuanian immigrants and of the meatpacking industry in Chicago.

Simple things, such as enforcing hand washing or workers’ rights were unheard of in the working environment. It is clear that Upton Sinclair was trying to expose the worker’s horrendous labor conditions in order to improve their situation, along with the introduction of socialism. Upton Sinclair, in his novel, talks about how a Lithuanian immigrant by the name of Jurgis Rudkus, and his family, travel to Chicago trying to make ends meet. However, they soon realize Chicago was not the place for that.
