The Walls family Consisted of Jeanette being the middle Child, then Lori being the oldest, Brian being the youngest, and of course their parents Rex Walls and Rose Mary. In The memoir Jeannette tell the readers about the setting in various places such as, Small towns in Nevada, Phoenix, West Virginia, and many other places. Moving from place to place never gave the children a chance to get used to where they were living or make friends.

Her education I think changed a lot she went to school , But she knew sooner or later they would move again, without her dad she wouldn’t be able to know as much information as she did going to school

They constantly find themselves either with a somewhat decent amount of money or at times, no money at all. He showed the family glimpses of wealth and what the experience of wealth felt like by taking

In The Glass Castle, Rex and Rosemary Walls can be categorized as permissive parents. Rex and Rosemary’s parenting style is permissive because they approach their children as more of a friend than a parental figure, they do not discipline their kids, and they have few demands expected from their kids. The Walls parents act more of a friend than a parent to their kids due to their easygoing nature. Rex brushes off Jeanette's complaint regarding Robbie’s inappropriate touching and does not take action as a normal parent should. Rex had the opportunity to punish Robbie for his behavior but decided not to: “I’m sure he just pawed you some, I knew you could handle yourself” (Walls 213).

In out of the dust, Billie Jo and her father suffer from a lot of loss and grief. Billie Jo’s father loses his wife and son and Billie Jo loses her best friend, Livie when she moves to California to get out of the dust. Billie Jo also loses the ability to play the piano for a little while because of her hands being burnt from the fire. They learn to overcome these hardships by living without the things they lost. They also learn to have a stronger relationship with each other and bond more.

Her mother died shortly after her birth leaving her father to care for her and her half-sister, Fanny Imlay. The dynamic of her family soon changed when her father remarried. Mary was treated poorly by her new stepmother, and her quality of life was less than satisfactory. Her step-siblings were allowed to receive an education while Mary stayed at home. She found comfort in reading, and created stories in her father’s library.

The family barely had one source of income from Rex Walls, and instead of helping out with the family’s finance issues, Rose Mary spent her days at home painting.
