This led to people better understanding new religion. The great awaking manifested a presence of shared American identity that created a change in the people who experienced it across the colonies. People got together it didn’t matter where they were from or who they were. The Great Awakening led to religion for black slaves and Indians because of missionaries. There many causes and effects of the Great Awaking.

It is 1741. The Enlightenment is spreading worldwide. The puritan people are leaving God. Johnathan Edwards gives a sermon on July 8th , 1741, trying to convince his fellow Puritan people to come back to God. He is going to try and accomplish this by giving his famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God '.

During the time of the Enlightenment and Great Awakening, colonists began to take a new view on life. The Enlightenment brought many new ideas and concepts on how the world worked. The Great Awakening brought forth the revival of a religious life. For example, throughout the Enlightenment, colonists started believing more in scientific theories rather than religious beliefs. Benjamin Franklin wanted to obtain the truth through experimentation and reason.

Starting in the 1730s, a movement formally known as the Great Awakening was born. This marked the beginning of a religious and spiritual revival that was a direct response to Enlightenment ideals which highlighted logic instead of spirituality. A leader in this movement was Jonathan Edwards; a theologian that delivered one of the most influential sermons of its time; a sermon titled Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God. In this sermon, Edwards employed the use of cherry picking from a credible source and the use of a threatening tone to convey his message - that one would be saved from the wrathful judgment of God if they obediently followed the Bible and its teachings.

An article by Frank Lambert discusses how Edwards help start the Great Awakening and also explained some of his beliefs. He says“.. Edwards set forth one of his most original explanations: the divine impinges on the human when, through God’s grace, the saint undergoes a transformation of the heart that leads him or her to a new understanding of things divine” (Lambert). Edwards, as well as other Puritans, believed that God could help anyone through any kind of trouble they may have been having and God could also make one believe that they were capable of doing extraordinary things. The Second Great Awakening affected society in a both harsh way and also positive way. It affected the society in a positive way because of all the movements that started. An example of one of the movements can be Women’s Movement which helped women basically get more rights in terms of them living their own life. The women did this because they wanted to be equal with the men since men could own property and vote but on the other hand there were the women who couldn 't do any of those tasks. There was also the Temperance Movement which helped drunks drink less alcohol since the movement lessened the amount of alcohol available in the U.S.

During his sermon he implies that if his congregation does not repent to christ they are in “danger of great wrath and infinite misery”. Throughout this sermon edwards uses literary devices such as strong diction, powerful syntax and juxtaposition to save his congregation from eternal damnation.
