Due to revivals the United states in the 1790 's-1830 's changed religion throughout the whole country. Which created the Second Great Awakening , this transformation changed Americans religon. In the beginning of the Revolution the largest denomomations were Puritan churches aslo called Congregationalist. Anglicans were also included,and Quakers. Methodism and Baptists, were also becoming a fast-growing relgions in the nation.

The Market Revolution and the Second Great Awakening both dramatically shaped the individual stories of Elijah Pierson and Robert Matthews. When the Market Revolution brought Elijah from New Jersey to New York, his life was a lot different than what he was used to. Elijah had come from a town where everyone attended church and where social hierarchy was unproblematic. At a young age he learned that “God had placed men and women into families and social ranks, then governed their destinies according to his inscrutable Providence” (15). However, when he moved to New York, few people attended church and homelessness was seen all over the streets.

The Great Awakening had a profound impact on Henry because his mother and father chose to worship in different churches. This is an important key to both his character and the kind of political leader that he became. His mother was involved in the Presbyterian revival. His father stayed with the Anglican Church. The great awakening and the enlightenment are similar in many ways but different in others. One way they are both similar is that they both defy traditional authority. Another way is that it taught them to seek truths for themselves. This shaped their beliefs. However they still had many differences.

In any new nation there must be a sense of government and law. In this new nation, America, government and law came from one place, the church. There was nothing separating church from state until a strange occurrence started happening and this was called “The Great Awakening”. It was not started by anybody with strong political ties or money. This was coming from the average people of this new land of America and wanted to make a change and that is what they did.

Between the 16th and 19th centuries Americans has embraced the idea of reinvention through their determination to change the religion and government of their time. The sixteenth century America is primarily dominated by the Puritan idealism, but slowly through the year’s things are changing both in the religion and culture. In human nature the constant need for change is captivating, a change towards something new and different than the current. The events of the growing and changing eighteenth century America reflect just that. Ideas of the Enlightenment take deep root in the transformation of ideas about human’s relationship to God and to nature. Therefore, a deeply religious society starts transforming into a more secular culture, but religion still has quite a large influence.

The Great Awakening was a spiritual event that swept the American Colonies. It was important how it prepared America for its War of Independence. During the awakening, the Colonists realized that religious power was in their own hands, not the Church of England, or any other religious authority. There were many effects from the great awakening, such as: faith in the Protestant religion was revived, Christianity was brought to African slaves, and a great increase in the interest of religion.

Richard Kaplan also said, “the theological belief in the potential mutability, indeed perfectibility, of people also encouraged a reforming attitude toward social institutions. Humanity and earthly society were not inherently sinful and, thus, could and should be reformed.” With the new quantity of religious people, the belief that there should no longer be sinful or unjust things grew tremendously. With this belief, people began to believe that things that needed to be reformed, should be reformed. The Second Great Awakening sparked a nationwide wave of reform movements that had a huge impact on American society throughout the 19th century.

People had both the right and the duty to make whatever changes were necessary to come up with a new government or new reforms to that government to better serve their needs. This is basically was the mindset of the people who believed that reform was need in society. The Second Great Awakening refers to a period of religious revivals at occurred in the United States in the 1830s. After this period, many reform movements took place to better serve society and the people in it.

In 1805, the New York Public School Society was created by wealthy businessmen and was intended to provide education for poor children. In 1817, a town meeting in Boston, Massachusetts called for establishment of free public primary schools. Many wage earners opposed this proposal. Josiah Quincy, mayor of Boston, supported the idea that education should be a priority by saying, “(By) 1820, an English classical school is established, having for its object to enable the mercantile and mechanical classes to obtain an education adapted for those children whom their parents wished to qualify for active life, and thus
