In the novel, The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway was given some advice from his father that “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, all people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” (Page 1) Nick was inclined to reserve all judgments, but his father’s advice revealed its truth when encountered with Tom and Daisy. The married couple were two different individuals with the same behaviors of being: untrustworthy, selfish, and inconsiderate.
Tom and Daisy portrayed a very perfect lifestyle, but in the mist of that lifestyle being ideal, there was no commitment or trust between the two. From the novel, Miss Baker mentioned to nick that there was a woman in New York associated with tom. (Page 15) Later in the story, it was discovered that the name of the woman was Myrtle Wilson. She and Mr. Buchanan were having private affairs and over-time became very attached. For example, the telephone would ring during dinner time and daisy, tom and miss baker would be familiar with who was calling. This was recognized as indecent by Miss Baker. (Page 15) In addition to tom and his secrets, daisy had some of her own with her past significant other Mr. Jay Gatsby. Before Daisy was introduced to Tom, she was in a deep relationship with Gatsby. The two were together before they separated for 5 years. Just as Tom and Myrtle were having private affairs, Gatsby and Daisy were doing the same. On the other hand, Tom confronts Gatsby and Daisy about their actions. He proclaimed
